Resident Evil Series

Survivor 1 synopsis

In 1998 a disaster struck the quiet Midwestern residence of Raccoon City. An uncontrollable outbreak of the Umbrella created T-Virus transformed the city into an inescapable death trap. To stop the outbreak from spreading, Umbrella Incorporated was forced to wipe out the entire city. However, this was not the only location where an outbreak occurred...

Survivor 1 trivia

This is the first Resident Evil to feature first person viewing.

This is the first Resident Evil game to take place on an island.

This is the first Resident Evil game to be released in the Arcade format.

Game reference: There are posters advertising the Capcom game Dino Crisis in the arcade.

This is the first Resident Evil side story with little to no relation to the main series.

It's noted that Ark Thompson is good friends with Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 2.

survivor 1 mistakes

During the beginning of the game, the main character, Ark Thompson, finds himself in a completely closed-off and isolated area that no one could enter or leave without going through a single door. He then goes from that area to another isolated area containing one body of Vincent. However, as he is investigating the body, he is attacked from behind by a zombie. There's no way the zombie could have shown up behind him as both areas were tightly closed off and isolated.

100% of the zombies on Sheena Island are males, yet the memos indicate there were also women as well. Where are the female zombies?

The imprisoned boy's diary states that the prisoner's planned escape was on October 10th. However, Vincent's diary states in his first entry, on October 10th, that the attempted escape happened the night before.

Near the end of the game, the villain character, Andy or a UT Commander, and the Tyrant monster's bodies are left in a hall. However, after the player leaves the hallway we see the Tyrant monster still in the hall, but the villain's body is gone.

Near the end of the game, one of three villain characters, Andy or UT Commander, is shown being impaled from behind by the Tyrant. However, once the camera pans down to the monster's hand in the villain's body, the hand moves downward as it 'removes' itself from the character's wound, revealing that the monster passed its hand through the character model.

1 Church Manager's File

October 7, 1998

Today, the leaders of the each section of the city, including myself, attended a meeting with the commander.

The briefing was on the destruction of Raccoon City. During the conference, everyone placed blame on William Birkin. He betrayed the company and wanted to keep the G-virus for himself.

The commander told us that if there is a traitor like Birkin in this city, we should execute him immediately and without question.

I wholeheartedly agree with the commander's orders. This city is as vital to Umbrella as that laboratory in Raccoon City was.

No... It is actually much more important.

We must not allow a biohazard to happen in this city. We cannot let Umbrella's efforts to buy the city and establish these billion-dollar facilities go to waste. We should keep a closer eye on the behavior of personnel in the future.

2 Factory Worker's Diary

August 5, 1998

I can't stand it anymore! I have to take the subjects to the operating table and sever their skulls to extract a part of their brain.

I do this over and over, day after day... It is awful. Guilt stays with me all the time, even after I go to bed.

Commander Vincent instructs us... "Do not see them as humans. They are just raw material we use to create Tyrants with." But it is we who cut their skulls. I can never consider them as just raw materials. They are humans just like we are.

I asked Commander Vincent about ways to reduce their suffering, but he ignored my request, saying that by using anesthetics, pure Beta Hetero NonSerotonin cannot be extracted.

Even if it is the company's orders, I don't believe what we are doing is ethical...

I'm sure that I'll be sent to the worst possible place, when I die. Or perhaps I should say, I'm already there...

3. How To Extract The Material

How to extract Beta Hetero Nonserotonin

To establish a system of mass-producing Tyrants, it is absolutely necessary that during the process of gene cultivation, a large amount of pure Beta Hetero Nonserotonin must be injected. This material is one of the human brain's elements.

It has been revealed that the material is mainly produced by the pituitary of people at the latter period of developing secondary sex characteristics.

Also, medical data shows that this cerebral material is produced in response to the excessive secretion of noradrenalin that is produced from the locus ceruleus in the brain stem.

Noradrenalin is the cerebral material secreted when people are in a state of extreme tension or fear. As the Beta Hetero Nonserotonin only exists in active cells, you can't extract it from a dead brain.

Thus, the best way to extract the material is to cut open the subject's skull without anesthesia. This will cause the excessive secretion of adrenalin.

The pituitary is then ripe for immediate extraction.

4 Janitor Andy's Diary

Sewer Caretaker, Andy's Diary

September 6th

I've never seen him, but I heard that one called Vincent has become this city's supreme commander.

Officially, he is an elite sent by Umbrella headquarters. In truth, he is such a fiend that he would not hesitate to kill his friend if it would promote him.

Well, since I live here in this dark sewer, it doesn't mean anything to me...

September 20th

I heard a disgusting rumor...

The new commander Vincent, orders the facility personnel to do savage experiments every day on kids brought in from all over the world.

I don't know why those kids were brought to this city, but it sure is disturbing. Well, I don't want to get involved, so long as it doesn't affect me...

October 10th

It seems some terrible accident happened above ground last night. I don't know any more details, but I heard that Commander Vincent has done something cruel.

November 9th

Today at last, Commander Vincent came down here for an inspection.

We made small talk, but I could see nothing but cruelty in him. When I took a picture of him as a souvenir, he became very angry...

He is such a jerk!

5 Lott's Diary

September 10th

I saw some prisoners at the arcade today. They all had sleepy eyes. One of the girls even slavered. Some of the boys were glaring at me. They wore rugs and smelled rotten.

Like dad and Commander Vincent told me, they are very different people from our Umbrella families. Dad told me that they bring them to this island so they can operate on them and make them into decent people.

I think they are doing the right thing. I hope they will become decent people sometime soon.

October 15th

I heard Commander Vincent killed those people who tried to escape from the prison.

I wonder why such a thing happened? I know they are inferior to us, but did he have to kill them? Is this what I believed in?

Umbrella and my dad were supposed to help the inferiors by operating on them...

Why did he kill them?

November 23rd

The city is in total panic!

Monsters are everywhere and they are attacking people! Those Umbrella people who were very nice to me suddenly started attacking me.

I need help!

Please someone rescue me!

November 24th

My dad and my mom turned into monsters.

One of the survivors told me that Commander Vincent turned the people in the city into monsters.

I can't trust anyone now.

I have to survive and protect my sister Lily, no matter what!

We have to escape from the city together!!

7 Prison Chief's Diary

October 20th

Today, we received a reply to our report about the incident where 20 guinea pigs committed suicide the other day.

The headquarters does not seem to have any suspicions and says that they plan to gather replacement guinea pigs soon. It's too late, but now I'm starting to regret that I sent a fake report of a mass suicide incident, when it was actually a mass escape.

However, as long as I stay in this city, it means death to me if I dare to oppose to Commander Vincent.

I'll never forget the cruel smile of Vincent when he was shooting at the boys who tried to escape from the prison on that night. It looked as if he were killing a bunch of insects.

Commander Vincent is indeed a very cold-blooded person, just as he is rumored to be. He is a true murderer. I am in a position where I am supposed to report the truth to headquarters, but I'm so afraid of Commander Vincent... I don't know what to do...

8 Report On The Destruction Of Raccoon City

Slide: Raccoon City
"After the Destruction" Report

Date: August 5, 1998
Report from the U.B.C.S. member.
Part 1

The biohazard that occurred on May 11th at Lord Spencer's mansion and bio=chemical laboratory ended on July 25th when members of the S.T.A.R.S. teams destroyed the entire facility.

As of 8/5/98, there are no signs of viral leakage in the surrounding area. However; we must continue to monitor the area with extreme caution.

Our secret operative Albert Wesker, is M.I.A. and is presumed dead. However, we have just received information that Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are preparing to report the incident to the press and their police chief.

I request that this matter be addressed with the utmost urgency.

U.B.C.S. Commander
Nicholai Ginovaef

Date: September 30, 1998
Report from the U.B.C.S. member.
Part 2

At this moment, I am in the clock tower situated above Raccoon City.

The city is overrun with zombies. It is safe to say that Raccoon City has been completely destroyed due to the biohazard.

This situation is different from the accidental biohazard in the mansion. We suspect that it was intentionally caused by one of our company's researchers, Dr. William Birkin, the creator of both the T-virus and G-virus.

I have researched both biohazard incidents, and noticed that two issues need to be addressed immediately.

The security of the virus stored in our worldwide facilities must be improved. Also, we need to re-educate our workers. Biological weapon viruses will surely become our primary product, so they should be handled as such.

All personnel should take extreme care not to allow any more biohazards to happen.

U.B.C.S. Commander
Nicholai Ginovaef

Date: October 6, 1998

We've had extreme difficulties collecting the sample data for T-virus contamination and tactical data regarding the B.O.W.

The new B.O.W. we call "Nemesis" was more ferocious and intelligent than we had expected. As a result, many U.B.C.S. members sent to the area have been sacrificed in the process of collecting combat data.

I expect the researchers to analyze the combat data and use it to develop an even more evolved, ultimate B.O.W.

9 Resturant Manager's Diary

Restaurant Owner's Diary

October 4, 1998

I heard an unbelievable story.

A small town in America, Raccoon City, was destroyed last week. They said that all the residents turned into zombies, and the city is now completely deserted.

Umbrella Inc. is rumored to be behind the incident, but I don't know the details. Although the incident occurred far from here, across the sea, I can't help but feel anxiety if Umbrella is truly behind it.

I hope that this city will be okay...

October 6, 1998

I heard another interesting story. This one is about William Birkin, who supposedly destroyed Raccoon City.

He was the creator of the virus called T, or G, or whatever. He tried to use the virus for his own purposes. Unbelievable as it may seem, he injected the virus into his own body and turned into a monster.

Also, the virus leaked into the sewer and it is rumored that rats spread the virus around the entire city.

October 8, 1998

What should I do? One of the workers who came here for lunch mentioned that the T-virus IS on the island. He said that there's no possibility that an accident could occur here in this city, but... I'm not so sure.

I decided to work for Umbrella because of the money. But now I've grown tired of opening my restaurant for only Umbrella workers.

There is nothing new or interesting left for me in this town.

I guess it's time to get out of here before it's too late...

10 Umbrella Top Secret File

Umbrella Confidential Document

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

This file contains the data for the B.O.W.s created by the virus contamination that occurred during the biohazards.

The first biohazard was caused by the T-virus leak at Arklay Laboratory on May 11, 1998.

The second was the large-scale biohazard at Raccoon City which happened 4 months later.

Although they have not been confirmed yet, note that there may be B.O.W.s other then the ones listed below.

The data for those will be filed when it is ready.

B.O.W. FILE #1: Zombie

Humans who are contaminated by the T-virus. They have lost their consciousness, and wander around on their instinct and appetite to satisfy their hunger for human flesh.

Tactical procedure:

As their movements are slow, they can be easily eliminated if you keep enough distance to snipe.

B.O.W. FILE #2: Cerberus

Dogs which are contaminated by the T-virus. Their bodies have not rotted as much as that of the zombies, so they can move much faster. They are very sensitive to noise. If they hear you run, they will pursue and attack you.

Tactical procedure:

You can eliminate them with a hand gun, but since they are fast, it may be difficult to aim.

B.O.W. FILE #3: Licker

They are created by a mutation that occurs when a zombie is contaminated by the T-virus. As a result of the transformation process, they have conspicuous features like exposed brain tissue, and they move around on all four legs.

Compared to the zombies, they possess incredible agility. They have no eyes, and are unable to see. Instead, they have an abnormally evolved sense of hearing.

Tactical procedure:

As they attack in response to sound, you should be careful when firing at them. Since they are very keen to hearing footsteps, you should avoid running when they are around.

B.O.W. FILE #4: Ivy

B.O.W.s which are created from plants. They can move on their own will by using the vapors inhaled through their skin. Watch out for their tentacles which are used like whips.

Tactical procedure:

As fire is lethal to them, a grenade launcher is a very effective weapon.

B.O.W. FILE #5: Hunter

B.O.W. that is created when the T-virus contaminates the human DNA. Since their lower body muscles have been enhanced, they can jump incredibly high and attack enemies with razor-sharp claws.

Tactical procedure:

Just before they jump at an enemy, they stop their movement momentarily. You should attack them during this time.

B.O.W. FILE #6: Tyrant

The ultimate result of our B.O.W. project with the T-virus.

Based on the regular Tyrant, the more ferocious "Enhanced Tyrant" and "Nemesis" which is even more aggressive and intelligent, were created at our European branch.

Tactical procedure:

There are virtually no countermeasures against Tyrants' incredible power.

B.O.W. FILE #7: Prototype

They are not yet complete, but logically speaking, we can create and mass-produce more ferocious B.O.W.s by adding certain materials during the process of cultivating Tyrant's genes.

However; there is one problem...

11 Vincent's Diary

Commander Vincent's Diary

October 10th

Last night, a group of guinea pigs confined in the prison escaped, took weapons and caused a riot.

The guinea pigs who were responsible for the incident were all shot to death by myself, but it will cause a lot of trouble if Umbrella headquarters becomes aware of this.

This could spoil my plan of returning to headquarters and collecting my reward for my great achievements here in this city.

I ordered the prison chief to report the incident as a mass suicide, but I will also have to order the others who are involved not to talk about it...

November 8th

The people of the city who have been opposing me are now trying to gather information, intending to report to headquarters what I did.

Yesterday, that little boy, Lott, told me that a spy sneaked into the city. I guess that spy may have something to do with the rebellion happening here.

I'll let him for now, and see who he works for and why he is here.

Then I'll kill him.

It's a sad story that the only person that I can trust in this whole city is that little kid, Lott.

November 19th

The people of the city seem to be preparing to hand the prosecution report to the headquarters people who are delivering the new guinea pigs next week.

They say that they have evidence of my doings. I can never allow them to reveal that.

Those civilians will regret what they are doing. I'll teach them what happens to those who oppose me!!

November 22nd

Now they know who holds the power!

I've spread the T-virus all over the city. Of course, it was done so that it looked like an accident. The city should be completely contaminated.

Now I can go back to Umbrella headquarters and get promoted for my great achievements at the factory.

No one can oppose me now...!

Wait... There is one person that I have to take care of. It's that spy. I have to eliminate that rat who sneaked into the city!

12. Vincent's Tapping Records

Wiretapping Record of Vincent

We can no longer tolerate what Commander Vincent has been doing,

To deprive him of his position, we must obtain conclusive evidence of his evil doings, and report it to headquarters.

We realized that he is very intelligent and cautious. As a last resort, though it was very dangerous for us, was to wiretap his phone conversations.

Finally we obtained evidence that was potent enough to deprive him of his position.

This tape contains his conversations on the prison breaking incident last month. It proves that he shot those young people all by himself, and that he tried to hide the truth.

Furthermore, this tape reveals that before coming to this city, Vincent had killed his colleague only for the purpose of his own promotion.

If we could hand this tape to the corporate people coming to the city next week, he will surely lose his position for sure.

Then the city will be peaceful once again.

13 Young Man's Diary

An Imprisoned Boy's Diary

September 5th

16 days have passed since I was abducted on a street in Congo by the men in black, and was brought here. I didn't understand what was happening at first, but I gradually became aware of the truth of this city.

We seem to be confined here to serve as guinea pigs for a medical company called Umbrella Inc.. All the residents of this city work for Umbrella, even the women and children are family members of employees.

The guinea pigs seem to be gathered from all over the world. The guy in the next room is from China, the one in the front of my cell is from Brazil. The rest are Russian, Japanese... It's like a world trade show. Its strange that they are all around my age. The youngest is 16, and the oldest is 19 or 20.

Those guys from Umbrella sometimes take us to an arcade or to a nightclub so we can enjoy ourselves and relieve our stress, but I won't let them deceive me. I will escape from this place, no matter what it takes! I must...

Anyway, the most important thing to do now is to organize and gather our comrades for what lies ahead.

September 10th

Recently, the others have been behaving strangely. It seems that they have put some kind of weird drug into our meals. I sometimes lose consciousness, too.

I have to be careful.

September 21st

I can't believe it!

Another friend of mine, Chin, from the next room, was taken to the factory on the mountain. I don't think Chin's coming back. He will meet the same fate as Anna or Jacob who disappeared last week.

I know... I know what happens to those who are taken to the factory on the mountain...

When they took me to a nightclub yesterday, I overheard a conversation that some factory workers were having...

Under orders from Vincent, the commander of the city, they cut open our brains and extract some kind of material, whatever they call it.

All I can say is that Vincent is a devil. No... Not just Vincent. Even the women and children in this city don't treat us as human beings, but as guinea pigs.

All the people in the city are evil. I will surely be killed if I stay here any longer.

We have to hurry and execute our escape plan!

October 9th

The time has come. I have noticed the Umbrella people have been visibly disturbed for about a week or so. Rumor has it that there was a terrible accident at the Umbrella laboratory somewhere in America.

All the prison guards seem to be very busy gathering information on the accident, so security isn't as tight.

We've organized our comrades already. Stojkovic and Enriquez are supposed to steal the keys from the guards, Sankhon and I will act as decoys, and Yoshikawa and Fellipe are in charge of gathering weapons.

October 10th

We have decided on our escape route. The plan will be carried out at 11pm tonight. We have twenty members seperated into two units: Unit A and Unit B.

Unit A will go into the sewer through the ventilation slot of the confinement room, while Unit B will use a rope to climb down from the surveillance tower.

We'll use the rope they used to tie us. If we fail, Vincent will surely kill us. But if we stay here, Vincent will order them to cut our brains eventually.

We're dead either way, but I'd rather die trying to escape...

survivor 1 review

My Personal Review:

Introduction:

This is the first Resident Evil game I showed my unhappiness to. I never really liked the Survivor series. I felt that the game made it impossible to loose, when they give you infinite ammo and they make the monsters so far away they don't have much a chance to get you. You'll find out below what my review of this game is.

Graphics: 4/10:

The polygonal graphics have a very close resemblance to Resident Evil 2, and do the zombies. Resident Evil 2 game graphics were rated just okay in my personal review I gave it in that web page of this site. This game is one of those kind of games I have a hard time playing because of the way the game moves. I don't like those games where the game's graphics move along with your characters. They call this first person view. I have issues regarding motion sickness with these kind of games. If I play this kind of game for too long, I could toss my cookies. I'm just one kind of person who can't take that kind of realistic movement.

Sound: 7/10:

The soundtrack was one of a few rare things that this Resident Evil was actually considered good. The game still gives you that suspenseful feeling; like there's something around the corner feeling. Although there were some soundtracks that sound more generic for arcade game playing. The dialogue sounded much cornier than Resident Evil 1. It's based on a character that not only lost his memory, by the sound of his words, he's lost his intelligence along with that head trauma from the helicopter crash.

Story: 2/10:

This had to be very poorly rated by many. This story is about a detective that lost his memory because the helicopter he was piloting crashed while fighting off an assassin named Vincent. In fact the whole storyline I don't even understand anyway. Just like with Resident Evil 2, there's children that have to be baby-sat. The previous games contained twists and turns and climaxes, which are some things that Survivor lacked a lot. The story plot is again very bad. Your play character, Ark Thompson "Vincent" and he lost his memory after a helicopter crash. He sees a dead body on the ground holding an army dog tag labeled "ARK THOMPSON" and that name didn't come to mind. Later on a pay phone rings and he answers it. The voice on the other end calls him "Vincent" and a "murderer." The man is yet to believe all this to be true about him. Throughout the game, this man is more and more convinced that he is Vincent and a killer, even after he first meets a little boy who's sacred to death to bump into him. All of a sudden the man realizes that he isn't the killer known as Vincent, that he is a detective called Ark Thompson. And he got this return of him memory from a teenage kid. It's kind of sad when a teenage kid out smarts a full grown adult.

Game Play 2/10:

Another feature I gave a shot in the head rating. This Resident Evil game gives you infinite ammunition on all your handguns. Instead of your character easily reloading your choice of gun when you run out of ammunition, you see the ammunition status on the screen. The fact that they give you infinite ammunition on your handguns, they make it almost impossible to loose. Same thing with your health status, it takes a lot just to get into caution and then into danger and into death. Again, they make the game nearly impossible to loose, and if for some chance you do get killed and it's not on purpose, you're even a bigger loser than the game itself. The game's graphics move with the movement of your character's movements, which is called first person view. There's even a feature where the game's camera angle will turn around and focus on the most important thing going on at the time, whether if it's an enemy or a door. When you are in battle against an enemy, you see a cross around the screen where you shoot your enemies with. This is a very crummy way to play any game, it really is. This may be a gun shooter game, but this nothing different than playing one of those arcade games at a game room using a plastic gun and shooting at a large monitor screen, except you're using a PS controller instead. Picking up an item or going through a door doesn't take real clicking effort: the game will do it for you if you get close enough to an item or a door. The puzzles don't take real effort either. And finally, the game is way too short. A typical game play could take you an hour and a half, and it gets even quicker than that if you're a superb player. I've seen video clips where people have played out the game in less than a single hour. Most Resident Evil games, a good game play takes you an average of three hours.

Replay Value: 3/10:

Just like with Resident Evils 1 and 3, the game give you a choice of which route you want to take between the beginning where the helicopter crash crashes your play characters to the escape helicopter after taking out the tyrant monster at the end.  Among those alternate routes you pick up game files that you couldn't get on your first and second game play.  And I say big deal about those files, there's no reward for collecting all 13.  The only real replay value is that you need to complete the game with an S rank to get a rocket launcher, that is about it.  There's really nothing to replay this game for.  There's no mini game or anything.  If you play the game and finish it, you're done!  It's a done deal!

Conclusion: 3/10:

If you like shooter games, you might like this game, and likely you won't.  The game gives you the option to save your progress.  What good does that do?  Once you save your game, the game doesn't continue, in fact, it ends.  So you're really not saving anything, you're really quitting your game.  The only things you really are saving is your files and anything in your inventory, which isn't really that hard to retrieve back if you loose them.  So saving your game just so it ends with items that you can easily gain back is abosolutly worthless.  In m opinion, this game is worthless.  If you're going to end up with this game, just make it a gift from someone else, don't invest your money into it, it's not worth it.  I knew when I saw this game advertised on my school's computer, I knew this had to be a bad move.  I just didn't look like a traditional Resident Evil game.  This is the first Resident Evil game I've expressed my unhappiness with, and it's not the last.  The Outbreak series and the rest of the Survivor series were the others I gave a bad rating to.

Review Source #2

Resident Evil: Gun Survivor was a misguided attempt by Capcom to gain a share of House of the Dead’s market. The game play mechanics are the same as the previous games except the camera is placed where your character’s eyes would be. This is the game’s main flaw, there was no attempt to adapt the game play to the first person shooter genre and so it’s very, very dull. You place the crosshair on a zombie’s head and press the fire button until it falls over. Maybe it’s more fun with the GunCon but I can’t really imagine how. You get infinite ammo for your pistol so there’s very little of the survival horror aspect. The game goes like this: enter area, press auto-target button to get a perfect line up on enemies straight away, kill enemies and press auto-target again to home in on mission critical item (usually a key), pick up key and use on one of three doors to decide your route.

Graphics:

The graphics are on the same level as Resident Evil 2, mainly due to the fact that enemy models and textures were taken directly from that game. Due to Survivor being first person the environments are now full 3D. Imagine how low-grade RE2’s 3D models were then picture a whole environment made out of them. Due to the limitations of the PSX the environments have to be very small with minimal detail, suspended in a vast black expanse (they didn’t even put in a skybox). You can shoot out windows but there’s no reason why the cross-hair would ever go near one. The pre-rendered backgrounds from the other RE games allowed the developers to put in large amounts of detail, with papers, blood and other generic objects strewn over desks creating a convincing impression that someone once lived there; not possible in Survivor. Although it is nice to see the Hunters redone, and the intro and ending are very entertaining. The weapon models are nice, but they don’t show in-game and the only time you will see them is when you first pick them up.

Sound

This may be even worse than Gaiden’s. Most sounds are taken from RE2, but any original ones sound like they were taped in someone’s garage. The voice acting is horrendous and will usually have you reaching for the mute button, but static usually distorts what they’re saying enough so that you can’t hear it. I’m afraid I didn’t notice any music.

Story

The story relating directly to your protagonists is inconsequential and can be dismissed out of hand. Early on in the game the path you choose to take decides which of the three plot routes you’re going to take, leading up to a confrontation with a character you met earlier when you chose. But it’s the background plot that’s the star here. It revolves around a facility where Umbrella mass-produces its T-103 series, giving insight into the biological background and the depths at which Umbrella will sink to. One file provides an explanation on the creation of every mainstream BOW in the game. Strangely nearly all the other files are in the form of diaries, but they usually are the best type of file so I’m not complaining.

Conclusion

Survivor is an inherently dull game, compounded by the fact that you cannot save and must therefore play through the entire game from the start. And it does not help that in the middle of the game the areas get really boring, but they do improve once you reach the final section. It’s nice how it contributes to the overall storyline but I can’t help think how much better it would have been if it were done in the traditional third person style camera.

survivor 2 code: veronica synopsis

Resident Evil: Survivor 2: CODE: Veronica – is perhaps the oddest game of the saga.
Its story line is based around that of CODE: Veronica, but aside from the characters, location and enemies – the game couldn’t be anymore different if it wanted to be. It was Capcom’s first attempted at bringing Resident Evil to the arcades, and early builds were titled: Resident Evil: Fire Zone.

Its structure is more like an arcade game too, with levels instead of a continuous story, and ‘bosses’ at the end of each. Points are awarded for quick completion times, damage taken, which weapons you used, etc.

The game did reasonably well worldwide and was released on the PlayStation 2 in Japan and Europe. The US missed this game as Capcom feared that releasing a light gun game in the wake of shootings in American high schools would be met with criticism.
It’s nonetheless an interesting title, but only really worth owning if you have to have every single Resident Evil available, but as it contains no additions to the overall storyline, and isn’t really all that playable, you wouldn’t be hated giving this one a miss.

survivor 2 trivia facts

This marked the second game never to appear in North America.

This is the second Biohazard game released for PlayStation 2 in Japan.

The game was released in two packages: standalone and with a GunCon 2.

This game was the first in the series not to have a direct bearing on the plot.

The game was ported over from the arcade.

The game reused graphical assets from CODE: Veronica, and added other enemies such as Lickers and the Nemesis.

While Rodrigo Juan Raval was not controllable in the original CODE: Veronica game, he is controllable in this game.

This game is a sequel to the first Gun Survivor, and a spin-off of CODE: Veronica.

This is the only game in the series besides Gaiden not to have voice acting.

Subject: Encounter with the T-Veronica

Report: 1st Encounter

During our mission on Lock Fort Island, we have encountered a carrier who was infected by the T-Veronica virus. It seems that the Poisonous Mushroom had hidden the T-Veronica on the island. Due to the third level of biohazard caused by our sabotage mission, we have seized control of 90% of the establishment and the organization on the island. Any form of an organized effort of resistance has already been suppressed. Note that the T-Veronica carrier bore a close resemblance to Alexia, daughter of Ashford family.

22:40: Same Day-2nd Encounter

Our second encounter erupted into a close range combat with a unit of our agents and 2 units of Hunters. They ended up to be wiped out within three minutes.

In my opinion, the potential of the T-Veronica carrier is beyond comprehension. It has the ability to transform in order to accommodate a hostile element. For defensive purposes, it transforms its skin into armor to protect its body against bullets. It is assumed that the T-Veronica carrier can evolved to accommodate any environmental change. The blood of the T-Veronica carrier seems to catch fire once it is aerated. When it attacks by spraying its blood, it's more powerful than a flamethrower. Survival rate against this type of weapon is very low since the T-Veronica carrier pursues its victims with the intelligence of a human.

SUMMARY: Survival rate against an enemy of this potential is extremely low.

2 Diary Of Chief Warden

Only a few hours remain for me as a conscious human being. This will be the final entry in my diary. I won't waste what precious moments whining about what could've been. Who dropped the ball this time? Ah well, what's done is done. In 48 hours the virus will contaminate this entire island every life form will die out. Soon I will be nothing more than a soulless bag of meat controlled completely by the virus.

She is my last hope. My invincible lover, Neticia. I first met you in an empty solitary cell. You had innocently chosen that spot to make your web, a place to call home, though there was no food for you to catch. I wonder why I fell for you... Perhaps it was because I sensed we were kindred spirits, choosing to live our lives in some sheltered corner secluded from others... I diligently kept feeding you with moths and roaches. Watching you wrap their bodies and suck out their fluids relaxed me. I noticed how you had grown, but I wanted you to be bigger and stronger. That's why I started to steal bodies for you. There was no harm in it, after all they were the dead remnants from various experiments, no longer useful and left to be disposed of secretly. So I did just that, by feeding you. The effect of the virus on you was astounding, and in no time you had become as big as a man. Then, when I ran out of food, I sent a prisoner to the cell. They would be tortured to death by Alfred anyway. No one cared if a few went missing... At last you have grown too big to live in a cell. Now I let you crawl loose in the prison. The ceiling has become your nesting place and you've become to devour prisoners and prison officers at random. No one will be able to destroy my lover. You are far more powerful than that annoying Alfred, your fangs are sharp enough to slice his empty little head off with one bite.

All those memories... they'll be gone. My whole body has been infected with the virus. Now I'm hearing the noise you make when you crawl on the ceiling with your eight slender legs, Neticia. I guess you have eaten your food up. I guess the hunger is urging you. My dear Netty... Kill everyone. Destroy everything. Devour all. The meaning of the world will be lost when I die. I know you gazing at me with your eight eyes. Don't hesitate. Now, fulfill your urge, and let nature take its course as you sink your beautiful fangs into me...

3 Inspection Report

A letter sent to the commander of "Lock Fort" (Rockfort) Island from an inspector of Umbrella.

Here is a brief report on what we have found so far:

Our undercover agents have yet to crack the identity of the spy working for H.C.F.. However, based on the D-files obtained in Geneva, we are certain he is on Lock Fort Island and has gained full access to all areas of personnel. Our men have been on the case for three months now, and I assure you this matter will be dealt with swiftly and quietly once we have identified our target. Our sources inform us that he has joined forces with our enemy, plotting some sort of offensive attack. Few details are known at this time, but we do know that they have succeeded in duplicating the prototype.

Given the new urgency of this situation, I have taken the livery of sending you a special gift. Nemesis type T, the latest in B.O.W., was created in the States and has set the world on fire with its performance in Raccoon City. Since everything about it is completely confidential including its budget and inventory controls, there will be no shipping record. The package is hidden in amongst other materials in a routine shipment.

All evidence of this transaction must be destoryed with the utmost discretion, and any knowledge of it will die with you and me.

P.S.
Nemesis T is programmed to set loose once and emergency is detected. There is no other way to activate it. Regard it as a talisman and use only as your last resort.

5 Monologue Of Claire

I seem to have fallen asleep in spite of myself. The sound of the turbo engine of the V-Tol has woken me up. I was dreaming. No. I was having a terrible nightmare. I'm drenched in sweat, and my heart is thumping in my throat.

The dream is fading away rapidly, just like a dream always does. Then only the memory of fear and deep sorrow remain. To my surprise, I seem to have been crying. In the cockpit, Steve is controlling the plane. The nightmare has gone far behind. What do I have to fear? What should I be sad? We're safe, for we got away from the cause of so much fear and sorrow. The island...

I can see the warm sunlight coming into the cockpit, as if it erases the darkness. There are dolphins jumping on the surface of the sea below. However, the fragments of the nightmare never leave my mind. The scenes I dreamed of are surfacing one by one. I was freaming of the island... I was fighting just like I did a while ago, just like I did together with Steve. But the dream was about to unfold in a different way, in the worst way. My farewell to Steve... That is a reality that could've happened... if anything had gone wrong... But it didn't. We won this future. We have escaped from the island of death. It's time I forgot the nightmare. It's time I talked with Steve. The sky is bright with sunlight.

It's becoming brighter and brighter. I wonder why he doesn't turn around? Now it's too bright, as if I'm in a white blanket of fog.

Was it just a dream? I don't know... I'm in a white blanket.

I wonder why he doesn't turn around. Is what I believe to be reality real? The steady sound of the engine of the V-Told has become louder and louder like the noise from a swinging ax, and I realize that I'm waking up.

survivor 2 review

My Person Review:

This game wasn't relesed here in the United States, so I can't give a fair review on this game, considering I never played it.  If this game is anything like the other Survivor game, I say "screw it!"

-- Resident Evil Series Site Owner (Me)

Introduction:

Resident Evil: Gun Survivor 2 oriented as an Arcade title created jointly by Capcom and Namco for Japan. The game was built using the Naomi GD tech from Sega for their Dreamcast, which made perfect sense seeing as the game was built up from the Dreamcast Code Veronica title. The arcade version had some slight load times seeing as it was accessed from a GD, but apparently the advances had allowed some graphics upgrades above what was originally shown on Dreamcast. The game also allowed 2 players to play at once, a first for Resident Evil.

This said however the title reportedly flopped in Japan. A problem of trying to combine a first person shooter with one that allowed you to move the character. While this was Capcom's second outing on this idea, the first being Survivor on PlayStation, it seemed the idea was lost when brought to the arcades.

Which is why I questioned the point of bringing it back home.

Overview Negative:

After playing, personally I do think the problem is less in the fact that moving between shooting and moving is hard (although it still doesn't help-more on that later), but that doing it with a timer ticking down is the worst way you could ever think of pushing someone to play.

The game becomes less of a panic because something is coming to get you now and more of a panic because something is coming to get you but you're stuck against this wall, can't turn well, and will be dead in a few seconds. With the original Survivor, there was no timer - you moved at your own pace, and while there was still problems, its system looks brilliant compared.

This is why the Dungeon Mode in Survivor 2 is semi-better than the Arcade Mode. You still have a timer counting down, but it's more mission based, less confusing, and seems better thought out than the Arcade Mode was. More close to the Battle Mode of Code Veronica.

Back to the controls, Capcom has added six control settings for Survivor 2, and sadly 3 are unusable and the other 3 are just the same thing with one button altered. The conventional movement of Survivor, which by all means was just the Resident Evil control scheme in 1st Person has been scrapped. In it's place an horrible design best described as one based off PC FPS. However as everyone knows, those sorts of designs hardly ever work on consoles.

By default you use the Directional Pad to move in side steps left and right and move forward and back, and to turn you end up using L1 and R1. Why? Why was the "draw gun" idea removed? You still controlled like a tank, but you only used one set of controls to do it. When you wanted to shoot, you held R1 and fired away, and to start moving again you released it. With this new system I find myself trying to do major arc's in small hallways, getting stuck against walls more than I ever have in RE title (which says a lot). I have to question the sanity of the person who designed the control setup. I can't even imagine trying to use the G-Con2 and get better at controlling with it's setup (and from looking at the options I'd think the PS1 G-Con would be even worse - but I didn't try that).

Then there is the aiming. Of course you would have noted if you decide to use a PC style of movement and shooting that you either add a very good way of looking around at targets or a very good auto aim system. Sadly Survivor 2 has neither. I lost count the number of times I couldn't hit dogs, lickers, spiders, and probably the worst of all - bats. Large enemies are good enough targets, but the small ones and any that climb walls and ceilings are just horrible to try and shoot at. Prone zombies are terrible until they're crawling for long enough, and unlike other Resident Evil titles you'll only auto aim things in your screen. More realistic yes, but when it's in 1st person it's the worst thing possible. Thankfully there are markers telling you when enemies are in directions, and their color coded in range. You can switch this off in the options but who the hell would do that?

There are numerous other small problems that come up in just the early parts of play - bad translation, no voice acting, silly map design, and the fact there is a "Now Loading" screen even after the door sequences. The game seemed promising enough but then you just get annoyed at having to run everywhere to get a silly key in time.

Overview Possitive:

Considering I've vented everything bad, I may as well (finally) get to the good. The first thing is that although the game is based on Code Veronica doesn't mean the developers got lazy. While there was already the biggest amount of enemies in the original Code Veronica, they've gone out of their way to add even more. Lickers make a return, there are Drain Deimos' from Resident Evil 3, and if you don't get a level done in time you'll have Nemesis all over you. All of their models look excellent, making a nice transition to the fully 3D world.

There are also plenty of new weapons or weapon bonus'. More launchers, more guns for characters, and plenty to shoot at. Inventory space (if it can be called that) is all set to weapon storage, so you don't have to worry about keys and health, you'll just pick up items as you get to them. There is also a nice set of mini-games, bonus items (including files I believe), and bonus characters beyond Claire and Steve. The ranking system also allows you to try and better yourself through the levels (because of the controls it took me some time to get better-but it does happen).

Conclusion:

And now we come to the end of it. In short Resident Evil Survivor 2: Code Veronica isn't a brilliant game. It holds too many problems that a purchase is more like wasting cash than spending it, and doesn't hold anything new even for the biggest fans of Resident Evil. For those who can get it from Japan and Asia or the PAL version from Europe and Australia, I'd advise a rental first if you really want to try it out. Those in the US who can't get the game, don't worry, you aren't missing much here at all.

3. Biological Report 1

This is a survey report on the changes to the B.O.W.s, which have been considered failures and have been disposed of in this facility.

April 7th

The unknown water creatures are increasing rapidly, primarily in the drainage ditch. Since their body fluid contains strong acids, they are extremely dangerous to touch. I named them "Torpedo Kids" since they swim like torpedoes.

April 9th

I have learned that there is a mother that spawns all of the "Torpedo Kids". If I can find this mother and kill her, I will be able to exterminate all creatures in this area.

April 16th

I decided to try and exterminate the "Torpedo Kids", and so I explored the drainage ditch in order to destroy their mother. However, the "Torpedo Kids" appeared to try and protect their mother and badly injured me. Now they've extended their territory to my place, so I must find a way to get rid of them...

4. Biological Report 2

This is a survey report on the changes to the B.O.W.s, which have been considered failures and have been disposed of in this facility.

May 18th

Today I will relocate the observation area to be underground. This area is low on power and so most areas are very dark. I assume creatures fond of dark places must inhabit this area.

May 19th

We saw red shining objects. They look like the eyes of some creature, but we have not confirmed the entity yet. It moves extremely quickly and runs away as soon as we approach. I named this creature "Glimmer" for its glimmering eyes.

May 20th

In order to collect samples, I had some workers go and try to capture a "Glimmer". However, the plan did not work out and instead, the target attacked them and two people are now dead.

May 22nd

I increased the number of workers in order to try and capture a "Glimmer". This time they succeeded in shooting down one of them. According to the workers, the "Glimmer" will open itself up just before it goes to attack. Although it is dead, I have gained valuable samples.

June 1st

I have been examining the collected samples, but I don't have any idea as to how the "Glimmer" evolved and transformed into this figure. It seems it is a sub-species of "Hunter". I, however, need to research this further...

7. Experiment "A" Blog

Sept. 26th, 1996

Today we will begin the experiment. The subject is a condemned criminal called "a". it has been one month since the subject was transported to this facility. He is not exactly aware of what is going to happen to him. However, he seems to be very frightened...

Day 1: Commence Experiment

We hammered a metal rod into the subject's frontal lobe in order to alleviate some of the pain. This was done only for humanitarian reasons.

Day 4: Removal of Eyeballs

We have removed the eyeballs in order to observe its reactions to external stimulation.

Day 14: Dose of Muscle Booster

After administering the muscle booster, we confirmed the unusual development of the muscles. It gained a drastic amount of weight before the treatment. In the future we will consider using hampering items...

Day 36: Sharpened Hearing

An effect of the eyeball removal procedure has been an enhanced sense of hearing. It recognizes precisely where a sound originates and its distance from that sound.

Day 41: Experiment Suspended

The experiment has been suspended due to the fact that the subject has escaped. Even without its vision, the subject is quite dangerous. We should use extreme care not to make sounds when we try to capture it.

8. Freight Crewman Diary

Aug. 27 (Tue), 2002

Yes! Today is my 100th day anniversary since coming aboard. But that's all I can write about since this place is so boring!! I expected a lot because this is a "Luxury cruiser", but I've learned that there's is almost no difference from working on a cargo vessel...

Sep. 4 (Wed), 2002

I finally have something to write about. Today large cargo was carried into the Presentation Room, which is beyond the Boiler Room. Recently, many people are going in and out of that room.

I wonder what's taking place there? I'm curious because the crew doesn't have access to that room...

Sep. 6 (Fri), 2002

I saw a red mark through the break in the sheet of one of the cargo crates today. I think it's a symbol for biological and chemical weapons.

Somehow passengers are still going in and out of this room. Maybe there is a hidden door in that room, but I'm not sure where it would lead...

Sep. 7 (Sat), 2002

My boss yelled at me today for not paying more attention to my job. What a jerk! But I'd better be more careful since I really need to keep this job...

File location: You will find this diary in the Store House room, on top of one of the crates.

9. Operator's Notebook

June 16th, 1997

One month has passed since I was dispatched here. I am astounded at the sloppy supervision of this Umbrella waste disposal facility. It's not surprising this accident happened.

I know that if I must die, I want to die as a human...

June 24th, 1997

The supervisor here called Morpheus, is so annoying. He drives me nuts. He must pay more attention to worker health management and biological weapons than anyone I have ever met. This facility belongs to Umbrella, but he obviously doesn't think so...

I have no idea how long I've been here. I don't wanna stay in this facility,

But I can't move.

My body won't move...

10. Orders From Morpheus

I have arrived and begun the plan.

I need you to make sure all the instrument panels work properly. The facility is on strict alert and you will need to input my voice to the voice recognition panel at the entrance of the clean room in order to enter the Research Area and check the instrument panels.

I've sent an email containing my voice . You can receive it on a terminal in the residence area. Be sure to delete the email after your work is complete and remember to keep this confidential.

11. Regular Report No. 1162

TO: HQ Int'l Investigation Dept.
ATTN: O'Neal

This will be my final report on Morpheus for a while since it appears that he is starting to suspect something.

Until further notice from me, please refrain from contacting me, so that I can devote myself to doing my "Regular" job as his aid.

After robbing the lab in Paris, Morpheus appears to be preparing to board "The cruiser" to auction the items.

His obsession with "The beauty" keeps escalating. And just recently he has undergone plastic surgery to retain his youthful looks.

He often says questionable phrases like, "I will eliminate the ugly things in the world and create my kingdom filled with beauty".

We need to take action against him before it becomes too late, since he's currently in negotiations with several countries including the United States.

13. Regular Report No. 220329

(picture of Hunter)

This special "Elite" version has been modified for presentation. It is faster and more powerful than a standard Hunter.

(picture of Tyrant)

This sample was created with a newly developed virus. It attacks objects with its huge arms.

While its agility and striking power are outstanding, it currently has a fatal flaw because an essential organ is exposed. However, this will be rectified in future models.

[WARNING]
STRICT SECRECY:
ACCESS RESTRICTED.

We have succeeded in fusing the "T-virus" and the "G-virus" so that it has electrical properties.

However, after observing the prototype known as [T-091], we have to concede that there is much room for improvement.

In this newest version (ver. 0.9.2), we have finally been able to achieve a high voltage current, which was out initial goal. its electromagnetic barrier should make it near invulnerable.

Now we require a human test subject that matches the conditions to experiment on and observe.

14. Ship's Log

Sept. 20th (Fri), 2002

It will be four months tomorrow since the Spencer Rain left port. I'm proud that we have been having a safe voyage so far. A representative from Umbrella, the owner of the cruiser, spoke words of appreciation to me.

Sep. 21st (Sat), 2002

Something is strange. Although the crew has reported "nothing special", I am concerned that "the ones" may be breaking free.

I will make sure to always have my Magnum pistol with me.

Sep. 22nd (Sun), 2002

I can't send a signal for rescue. What should I do? The passengers and crew are all dead now...

All I can do is accept what has been happening on my ship as my destiny.

15. Thoughts On My Kingdom

The symbol of power is in Africa...

The symbol of knowledge is here in the Bio-Sphere...

The symbol of beauty is mine...

The beauty controls everything and I shall dominate it...

Establishing a kingdom where beauty has absolute authority is the dream, which I must make a reality. I was disappointed by Umbrella's betrayal, but that's fine. I'll just use them in return. If I secure enough funds, I will materialize the construction of my kingdom deep in Africa.

16. Waiter's Letter

Sep. 14, 2002

Brother,
How's everything? My life has taken a turn for the better because I'm on a luxury cruiser... Well actually, I work as a waiter on a cruiser. Most passengers are well known and I've seen them before on TV.

My colleague told me that they came from various countries to discuss business and that a world famous drug company owns this cruiser.

Anyway, I'm doing fine. take care of mother for me.

Love to all,
Joseph Carter

dead aim review

My Personal Review:

Introduction:

This is just another one of those Survivor game where you wish you had gotten something else than this game. Just like with the first Survivor game, it's a game that can make you sick and dizzy like me. In fact, I'm very quick to get sick and dizzy off this game. It only takes me 5 - 10 minutes before I have to put it away. And just to try to make it easier for me, I played the game slowly, but that wasn't enough. But when I get to the island after defeating the Tyrant off the cruise ship, I can handle the rest of the game normally.

Graphics: 7/10:

Unlike the first Survivor game, the game graphics are better, and still gives that creepy darkness feel.  Again I don't like the movement.

Sound: 5/10:

The only soundtrack I liked was during the credits the song called "Gunshot" by Rize.  I don't remember that much about this game.  I haven't played it in so long, so I don't recall too much of the sound quality and game script.

Game Play: 3/10:

Again, another shooter game where it can make a person sick and dizzy. During battle, the game's camera switches to the view out of the play character's eyes and the cursor shows up to help guide you to your gunshots, plus if there's another zombie and it's out of view there's an indicator to which direction you should shoot over the camera's angle at. Plus you see how many bullets you have left when you play, which is convenient, but you don't need that feature when you play the other Resident Evil games.

Story: 2/10

What story?  There's no connection with this game and anything about Umbrella, the previous games, espeically the other Survivor games.  I know nothing different about the Resident Evil story.  In my opinion, this game is just a game only for playing, and nothing to learn about.

Source #2 Review:

Resident Evil: Dead Aim can easily be noted as the “shortest” Resident Evil as it can effortlessly be completed in less than two hours. The game itself is more-so a sub-story as it does not hold massive importance to the series as a whole. Resident Evil: Dead Aim, also called Gun Survivor 4, was released for the PS2 in 2003.

Graphics

Resident Evil: Dead Aim utilizes the advantages of the PS2, but is no where near as good in comparison to Resident Evil: Outbreak (also released for the PS2). The characters still have the unrealistic look about them, but are vast improvements from those of the Playstation generation. The zombies do notfeel as real as those from the Playstation generation and the B.O.W.’s also are lacking.

Sound

The voice action in Dead Aim is below average and a good portion of the time the voices sound muffled or are difficult to understand. Bruce McGivern’s accent is terrible and sounds completely false. The game does not have a vast myriad of noises when compared to some of the predecessors.

Story

The overall story behind Resident Evil: Dead Aim is not bad for a mere sub-story of the main series, but definitely does not rank in the top three of best Resident Evils. The first half of the game takes place on an Umbrella cruise liner, the Spencer Rain, while the second half takes place in sewage plant that eventually leads to another Umbrella lab. The characters of Dead Aim do not feel as believable as some from the other games, and the B.O.W.’s are poorly introduced.

Conclusion

Resident Evil: Dead Aim is not a terrible game, but definitely is not the one recommended to start the series upon. The concepts in the game, such as the TG-Virus (The TG-Virus being a merged version of the T-Virus and G-Virus making the host possess electrical properties and become the opposite sex) are just too out there and unbelievable. Dead Aim is one that would be better to rent or borrow from someone rather than purchase unless, of course, you must have the entire series.

Source #3 Review:

The Gun Survivor series has always been a low budget one, spawning games that painfully showed the low production values, and poor execution that resulted in unpleasant packages for the majority of gamers. Gun Survivor 4 is a radical change from the previous games in every single category, most importantly the game play. It doesn’t have the polish of games like Onimusha or the main BH/RE series but it’s still vastly improved and quite enjoyable.

The game takes place in two main areas, a hijacked Umbrella cruiser and an island later on. Bruce McGivern (a US government agent) is the main character of the game, but you’ll also play as Fong Lin (a Chinese government agent) in various parts. The story itself is decent enough and it’s actually part of the Biohazard storyline (the scenario is written by Noboru Sugimura), but takes place four years after the Raccoon city incident. Much like an orthodox BH/RE game, there are files that you find throughout the game that tell you small details regarding the story. The core game play is the same as the main series as well; find items, solve puzzles and move on.

The exploration is done in a third person perspective, and you’ll only go into a first person view when you start shooting. That’s not all though, the movement and shooting controls are different as well. On a Dual Shock 2, the digital pad and the left analog stick are used for the main movement, but you’ll only move if you press forward and you can steer left or right while moving. The character always runs when moving unless you press and hold X, O, or L1, that button also acts as a dodge button much like BH/RE3, but it’s literally a dodge which is more helpful. There are no shoulder butts this time around, just simple dodges that prove very helpful in conserving ammo and speeding up the action.

Pressing left or right as you’re standing still will only move the camera 360 degrees, a first in any BH/RE game, and it’s actually a very nice addition. Pressing R1 will put you in a first person perspective, and once you’re in that perspective, R1 acts as a trigger button. Pressing left or right on the left analog stick or the digital pad will help you aim. However, you can only aim up or down by moving the right analog stick; mind you the camera doesn’t pan when you do that (much like GS3). Pressing up or down on the digital pad or the left stick while you’re in first person, will put you back in the third person perspective, and it’s easy to do that mistake as you’re getting adjusted to the controls. The most radical change however, is in the shooting action itself: there are sensitive parts on enemies that enable one hit kills, or help take them down faster. A very nice change from the ordinary and it rewards accuracy; not to mention conserve lots of ammo. I should note though that this is still a GS game, so don’t expect the length of an average action/adventure game, it should take 3 hours to beat the first time around. The difficulty level is adjustable from the start as well, as there are three of them: “So Sweet” Easy, “Recommended” Normal, and “Extreme” Hard.

The weapons in the game are predictable but even so, there’s more variety. Three types of handguns, including one with a silencer.. because you don’t want to disturb one zombie while killing another one. Other than the typical, there is a particle gun that replaces the rocket launcher at the end of the game much like in CODE: Veronica. Some new enemies are introduced as well, including a radioactive frog, and a giant boss which I’d like to call Lard Man, and last but not least: a speaking female tyrant. It should also be noted that there are various types of zombies much like BH/RE3.

Gun Survivor 4 looks solid, and the overall package is very pleasing to the eye unlike the last GS. The character models (including enemies) look good and the animations are very well done, in fact, they’re some of the best ever in any BH/RE game. There are unique animations for each zombie type, and some have more than others to add to the overall realism. For example, some zombies will slightly twitch while standing still; others will trip as they walk etc. There is a unique animation for critical (one hit) kills; the zombies will be knocked back 3-5 feet on contact and at some angles, they’ll juggle and fall or hit a nearby wall. The backgrounds are detailed, and are vastly improved over CODE: Veronica, and the texture quality is very good as well… not the best I’ve seen, but they’re much better than I expected them to be. The particle effects used for the blood are very nice and the blood never looked so real, especially with critical hits. And much like games like MGS2, the blood actually stays there. The CG fire is also a step up from the previous GS and most BH games (excluding Zero), and some of the lighting effects like the one used for the new frog looks great.

Speaking of CG, the CGs in this game are great and are some the best Capcom has done, and they’re considerably better than any of the CGs in any of the BH games. And last but not least *drum roll*… no door opening sequences while going from one area to another. There are downsides in the graphics department though. The animations for the in-game cut scenes are horrible in comparison the main game’s; they’re very choppy. The light sourcing used for the flashlight that Bruce/Fong Ling carry on their front pockets is below average and often it’ll light up an area through a wall… and don’t expect any dynamic shadows like SH2. The game’s frame rate is unstable as well; it’ll often run at 60 fps but will go down in areas. And there is some severe slowdown in some over-crowded areas.. and a bit of slowdown while moving the camera in some areas regardless of what’s in the area. Hopefully, that’ll be fixed in time for the NA/EU releases of the game, it’s nothing major but it’s there.

The audio in the game is okay, but it’s nothing special. The sound effects are almost the same as other BH games as always, but the zombie moans are brand new, and so are the voices of other enemies. The voice acting though is as bad as always; Bruce’s voice actor in particular switches back and forth between a badly acted southern accent and a northern accent. The music, unlike any other GS or BH game is very minimal, and whatever’s there is reminiscent of the original Dino Crisis music… but there’s barely anything to listen to. It doesn’t affect the overall atmosphere though and personally, I think it’s very suitable.

This is a very good effort by Capcom, and it was well worth my time and money unlike the previous Gun Survivors. It looks solid, plays well, and has an interesting story that makes for an enjoyable game, although it lacks the polish that other Capcom games have. Even if you hated every single aspect of the previous games, you’ll like this one for sure, and if you’re still skeptical, rent it first.
