BEFORE THE MANSION.

BEFORE THE DISASTER.

EVIL IS BORN...

Sent to investigate a series of grisly murders in Raccoon City, S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team scrambles into action. On the way to the scene, Bravo's helicopter crashes. Although everyone survives, what they discover next is gruesome: an overturned military transport truck riddled with corpses -- and that's only the beginning of their nightmare. Bravo Team is about to discover the evil that is growing all around them, and rookie member Rebecca Chambers is beginning to wonder what she's gotten herself into.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enter the world of survival horror...

Raccoon City: a remote mountain community suddenly besieged by a rash of grisly murders encroaching upon it from the surrounding forest. Bizarre reports start to spread, describing attacks from vicious creatures, some human... some not. Victims are apparently eaten.

At the epicenter of these deaths is a dark, secluded mansion belonging to the mysterious Umbrella Corporation. For years Umbrella has labored within the mansion, unwatched, ostensibly conducting benign genetic research.

Deployed to investigate the strange goings-on is the Special Tactics and Rescue Squad (S.T.A.R.S.), an unusual paramilitary response unit boasting an eclectic assortment of mission specialists: roguish Chris Redfield, former cat burglar Jill Valentine, dead-eye Barry Burton, and the enigmatic team leader, Albert Wesker. Together with the other S..T.A.R.S. operatives, they have good reason to believe they’re ready for anything.

But what unfolds as the S.T.A.R.S. penetrate the mansion’s long-locked doors is terror beyond their worst nightmares: creatures that defy the laws of life and death—the result of forbidden experiments gone disastrously wrong. Behind it all is a conspiracy so vast in its scope and so insidious in its agenda that the S.T.A.R.S. will be betrayed from within to ensure that the world never learns Umbrella’s secret. And if any survive…they may well come to envy those who do not.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They Knew It Wasn’t Over...

In the aftermath of their ordeal through the Umbrella Corporation's genetic research facility, the surviving members of the Special Tactics and Rescue Squad (S.T.A.R.S.) attempt to warn the world about the conspiracy to create terrifying biological weapons. But the conspiracy is far from dead, as the S.T.A.R.S. learn when they are declared outlaws by the very people who trained them. Forces to go underground, the S.T.A.R.S. resolve to battle the conspiracy on their own, determined to seek out and stop Umbrella's experiments wherever they may be.

Combat medic and biochemist Rebecca Chambers, the sole survivor of Bravo Team, joins a new S.T.A.R.S. strike force when rumor comes of another Umbrella experiment: hidden beneath the rocky cliffs of Caliban Cove, Maine, someone is building an army of the undead. Within a sinister lighthouse, through a complex maze of sea caves, inside the shell of a sunken shipwreck, the S.T.A.R.S. must battle more unspeakable horrors and stop a madman from unleashing the biohazard upon the world.

But the S.T.A.R.S. may never get the chance, as the aggressive DNA-altering virus Umbrella has engineered to create its living weapons begins to infect them...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring on the night...

Leon Kennedy: an energetic and eager rookie cop looking forward to starting a new life in Raccoon City, only to find the town strangely deserted…the eerie evening silence broken only by an occasional footstep in the shadows, and the faint, unearthly moan of something close by....

Claire Redfield: the resourceful but reckless younger sister of Chris Redfield, one of the missing former members of the RPD's special S.T.A.R.S. unit. Claire has come to Raccoon to find Chris at any cost, and to learn what really happened the night her brother's team stormed an isolated mansion deep in Raccoon Forest. But what she uncovers will raise only more questions, and put Chris' fate in doubt....

For on this night, Raccoon City has become a necropolis. In a secret lab for beneath its once-bustling streets, a botched attempt by the Umbrella Corporation to retrieve a devastating mutagenic weapon has resulted in a horrifying viral outbreak, transforming every man, woman, and child in the city into one of the living dead. And all of them are hungry.

Claire and Leon have one chance to save themselves: get to RPD headquarters and find some means of escape. But others have sought refuge in the precinct as well, and not all of them are on the same side...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abandon hope, all ye who enter here...

Umbrella has secrets. The mysterious corporation is creating monstrous biological killing machines for the highest bidder. But Umbrella has enemies, too—chief among them a contingent of rogue S.T.A.R.S., former members of the paramilitary response unit Umbrella helped create.

Umbrella has secrets. Despite its vast power, the company has begun to lose control of its hidden research facilities, bit by bit, one lab at a time. Three labs have already been destroyed, their work lost, setbacks due in no small part to the meddlesome S.T.A.R.S. and their allies.

Umbrella has secrets. Beneath the deserts of the American Southwest, on of the company's most elaborate facilities is about to go online. Somewhere inside may also be the key to stopping Umbrella once and for all... if Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Rebecca Chambers, and their friends can get past a strike team of corrupt S.T.A.R.S., and survive the genetically engineered horrors awaiting them below the sun-scorched Earth.

Umbrella has secrets. And one man with an agenda of his own knows them all...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zombies. Mutant animals. Bioengineer weapons and surgically enhanced monsters. Secret labs and widespread conspiracies. It seemed impossible, but Kill Valentine and her teammates among the S.T.A.R.S. had seen it all firsthand when the Umbrella Corporation turned Raccoon City into a staging ground for the most insidious genetic experiments ever conceived. After all she's been through, Valentine is ready to leave that remote mountain community forever.
But Umbrella isn't finished with Raccoon City.

Too much evidence of their unethical and immoral research still exists. It must be recovered or destroyed -- and quickly -- before it can be traced back to Umbrella. And with William Birkin's mutagenic virus already spreading through the city like wildfire, drastic measures are needed. Under cover of night, mercenary teams have entered the city, along with something else -- Umbrella's failsafe: an evolved version of its Tyrant-class killing machines, a lethal creature code-named Nemesis. Now Nemesis is on the hunt. And Jill Valentine is about to become prey.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A desperate search for her missing brother once again pits Claire Redfield against the terrifying bioweapons of the Umbrella Corporation. Her quest leads her to a remote island where a mad genius has unleashed every grotesque creature at his disposal to stop her from interfering with his horrific agenda.

Catapulted to the bottom of the world, Claire is at last reunited with the man she came to find. Chris Redfield has been fighting a one-man war of his own against Umbrella's most terrifying creations…and is now on a collision course with the man who betrayed the S.T.A.R.S. in Raccoon City. A man who should, by all rights, be dead: Captain Albert Wesker.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hive: a subterranean genetic research facility owned and operated by Umbrella, an immensely powerful corporation with interests in everything from human longevity to bio-warfare. With computerized defenses and heavily armed human backup, the Hive is impregnable and invulnerable. Or so Umbrella believes.

But something has gone fatally wrong. The Hive has lost containment of its most lethal and horrific creation: a virus that kills and reanimates human life, reducing the entire facility staff of five hundred men and women to mindless creatures with a single driving force -- hunger. And the key to stopping them rests with one young woman who cannot even remember who she is.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Failure of the Hive to contain the Umbrella Corporation's most deadly viral creation has led to an outbreak of apocalyptic proportions. Now the streets of Raccoon City swarm with the living dead, compelling Umbrella to deploy another of its bioweapons, a hulking prototype soldier code-named NEMESIS that kills anything in its path.

Jill Valentine of the RCPD and several others are determined to get out of Raccoon alive, but only if they can escape the city's hordes of undead, Umbrella's unleashed creatures, and the relentless pursuit of Nemesis itself. Their one chance is with one of the only survivors of the Hive -- a young woman named Alice, who learns a terrifying secret behind her connection to Umbrella.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following the events of Resident Evil: Apocalypse, the beautiful, dangerous, enigmatic Alice returns, and this time she and her fellow survivor Carlos Olivera are running with a pack of humans led by a new ally, Claire Redfield. Together they are cutting through the wastelands of the United States on a long trek to Alaska. Hunted by the minions of the scheming Dr. Isaacs, Alice has zombies hungry for her flesh and the Umbrella Corporation's monstrous lab rats hungry for her blood... while Alice herself hungers only for revenge.

wesker's extra report

Released with the Umbrella Chronicles Wii Zapper pack, Wesker's Extra Report is an additional report written by Albert Wesker just prior to his invasion of the Umbrella Caucasus Research Facility which provides some new details.

Project Umbrella Translation

An interesting incident...

Bizarre murder cases have recently occurred in a poor village of Russia's Caucasus region. The villagers there believe that the legendary monster, Almas, has been resurrected...

The disaster is eerily reminiscent of the original bizarre incident that occurred in Raccoon Forest.

There's an old chemical plant located 3 miles from the village that was built during the Soviet era. According to my investigation, the property was purchased by an aristocrat from a European noble family.

Five years ago, he invested foreign capital into the construction a large-scale underground base.

According to the geological survey, the solid rock formation would be more than satisfactory for the development of a certain facility.

Apparently, the crossword has been solved.

Umbrella has audaciously survived since the disappearance of Raccoon City five years ago.

They were held accountable for the viral outbreak and went to trial where the American government enacted it's own scheme. Yet despite the crash in stock price, they successfully managed to prolong their death sentence. At first, their allegiance to the government was convenient for them. The Umbrella unfolded in America, expelling a deceptive cloud of dust. Their lawyers generated a smoke screen to blind the public and sold it piece by piece to the court and the world's media.

Even people, organizations and nations were frenzied when they caught wind. However, Umbrella faced it's breaking point during that event.

It was only a matter of time before Umbrella's revival became known. B.O.W.s that were supplied as weapons began to appear in conflict regions. Below the surface, a system for the production of biological weapons was devised and the transport ship received it's information from Umbrella.

I must seize this opportunity. The T-virus has a variety of effects that brings about mutation and sells itself. The virus is merely a production medium for development of biological weapons and when left unchecked, only trivial random mutations cannot
be predicted.

Only a truly suitable alchemist deserves the power of the "Philosopher's Stone". Anyone else will be asked to quietly leave.

Eventually, all things Umbrella must come to an end...

about umbrella corporation

Founded: March 1968

Founders: Ozwell E. Spencer, Edward Ashford and James Marcus

Headquarters: Chicago, Illinois, USA; Paris, France; Tokyo, Japan

Key people: Ozwell E. Spencer (Owner), Sergei Vladimir (Captain of the Guard), Joel Allman (Vice President, Umbrella USA), Koki Igarashi (CEO, Umbrella Japan)

Industry: Pharmaceuticals, bioengineering, information technology

Officially known as Umbrella Chemical Incorporated. Umbrella was a powerful biochemical conglomerate which officially developed a wide range of pharmaceuticals and derivative products such as cosmetics. Unofficially, Umbrella developed and sold biological weapons, which was later supplemented by divisions specializing in defensive and information technologies, eventually leading to the establishment of a private military. Umbrella's sphere of influence even reached the United States Senate. Umbrella was a primary member on the executive board of the Global Pharmaceutical Consortium, and used it's position in order to acquire the research and development methods of it's fellow pharmaceutical organizations and use them in the development of bioweapons.

1968: Foundation

Following the discovery of the Progenitor virus in the 1960s and it's establishment on December 4th 1966, immediate research had been carried out but with limited capacity. In response to this, Ozwell E. Spencer arranged for the construction of a specialist facility in which research on Progenitor could continue. This facility would later become known as the Arklay Research Facility. With the completion of the facility in the late 1960s, Spencer wished to privatize research on Progenitor, possibly because of potential involvement with the U.S. government - who might have wanted to steal the research for themselves. Seeking to capitalize on the success of their work, Spencer proposed to found a pharmaceuticals firm from which they could operate behind the scenes. Edward Ashford and James Marcus both assisted Spencer in the formation of Umbrella, though Marcus himself was not particularly cordial to the idea. The pharmaceutical company, "Umbrella", was officially established in March 1968. In July that same year, Ashford was killed in a laboratory accident under suspicious circumstances due to infection from Progenitor, and as a result, Spencer was able to acquire Ashford's share of the company. The next month, the Umbrella Management Training Facility was officially established, and Spencer appointed Marcus as director in an effort to minimize his standing in the company while increasing his own. The Umbrella Africa Research Facility was completed in 1969, allowing Progenitor to be cultivated and shipped to the rest of Umbrella's worldwide facilities.

In November 1969, Alexander Ashford finished the renovation and building of the Umbrella Antarctic Base and it's research facilities and commenced the Code: Veronica project. Two years later, the fruit of the project was bore with the twins Alfred and Alexia Ashford being born. Along with the Antarctic base, the Umbrella Antarctica division was officially established.

1978-1988: A Struggle of Power

In 1978, James Marcus made a breakthrough discovery that would revolutionize the course of biological weapons research - the T-virus, a strain of Progenitor that had been infused with the DNA of leeches to form an enhanced variant. Throughout this year, Marcus began a number of criminal experiments that would later become the groundwork for an entirely new form of viral agent. During this time, Spencer started to grow paranoid about Marcus - either because of the breakthrough he was about to make, or the fear that he may have approached the US government in regards to his research. As a result, Spencer set in motion a series of plans to retrieve Marcus' research from him. His first attempts involved the use of ordinary researchers, who ultimately failed in their attempts to find the T-virus and ended up becoming test subjects themselves in Marcus' research.

It wouldn't be until the arrival of two young aspiring researchers - Albert Wesker and William Birkin - that Spencer would finally be able to get his hands on the T-virus. Both were lectured at the Umbrella Management Training Facility, under the tutelage of Marcus himself - the facility's director. Thanks to the efforts Wesker and Birkin, Spencer acquired a sample of the T-virus. Following this, he ordered the closure of the Management Training Facility and had research on the T-virus transferred to his own laboratories at the Arklay Research Facility, with Wesker and Birkin at the forefront of this research. Marcus was then left in isolation, having descended into a twisted obsession with his leech specimens while Spencer and Umbrella worked on ways to profit from his research.

The Training Facility was closed in July 1978, and Marcus became completely obsessed with his leeches and continued his own research in the closed down facility.

1988-1998: Consolidation

In the years following its establishment, Umbrella had become the leading supplier of pharmaceutical products which were ironically developed by utilizing funds gained from developing illegal bio-weapons. It had become No. 1 in business for its recruitment of producers, management and delivery personnel, largely due to its open-ended and equal-opportunity functions which removed any discrimination on the basis of race, sex or religion. While its public image grew in popularity, so did its dark underworld of biological weapons. In time, every industrialized nation on the globe became involved with Umbrella, with the United States government being one of its top customers. For a full decade, James Marcus worked in isolation beneath the Management Training Facility. Fascinated with his leeches, Marcus no longer had any consideration towards his position within Umbrella or even the T-virus itself. Spencer, who at this point had no further use for Marcus, may have begun to grow concerned about the fact that Marcus was the only original founder left who could threaten his own position at Umbrella, and also was the only one aside from Spencer who knew the location of the Progenitor virus. Enlisting the assistance of Birkin and Wesker once again, Spencer authorized the assassination of James Marcus. At an unspecified date in 1988, an Umbrella Special Forces unit stormed Marcus' laboratories and opened fire, taking the doctor by surprise and mortally wounding him. As he lay dying, Wesker and Birkin approached him, and gloated about the success that they would now reap from his work. With Marcus out of the picture, Spencer appointed Birkin and Wesker as the new chief researchers for the T-virus, acquiring all of Marcus' data on the leeches in the process.

In the years that followed, significant advances were made in T-virus research including the development of the "Tyrant" - a biological "super soldier" created via the T-virus. In 1991, Umbrella gained new support in the form of ex-Soviet soldiers left over from the collapse of the USSR. One of these soldiers, Sergei Vladimir, would prove to be instrumental in the establishment of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service and Monitor, as well as become an integral part of Umbrella's Tyrant research programs. Umbrella Europe also commenced the "Nemesis Project" in an effort to improve the effectiveness and overall intelligence of B.O.W.s at the Sixth European Research Facility in Paris.

With it's influence completely engulfing Raccoon City, Umbrella began construction of an expansive underground laboratory in 1991. Spencer himself also gave the green light for William Birkin's G-virus project, and Wesker transferred to the Umbrella Information Department. In 1992, Umbrella solidified it's firm hold on Raccoon City by contributing funds for the refurbishment of the city hall and Raccoon City Hospital, and in 1993 began bribing police chief Brian Irons, fully holding the city in it's sphere of influence. The same year, Birkin transferred to the underground lab beneath Raccoon City to commence the G-virus project, and entered regular meetings with Irons. Alfred Ashford graduated from a university in England and was installed as the director of the Umbrella Antarctic Base, eventually becoming an Umbrella executive and becoming director of Rockfort Island. In December, the military training facility on Rockfort Island was established to train Anti-B.O.W. squad members and members of the Umbrella Security Service.

In 1994, T-virus research at the Arklay Research Facility continued with a researcher named "John" being transferred from the Chicago lab in order to succeed Birkin as head researcher. Alfred Ashford also constructed many facilities on Rockfort Island following the completion of the training facility, including a private mansion and a prison.

1998: Outbreak

Almost ten years after his assassination, a rejuvenated James Marcus awoke thanks to the Queen Leech and vowed revenge against Umbrella. On May 11th 1998, Marcus leaked the T-virus throughout the Management Training Facility and the Arklay Research Facility. This struck the cord on the chain of events that would bring about Umbrella's downfall in 2003. While Umbrella succeeded in retrieving the T-A.L.O.S. prototype before the destruction of the Arklay Research Facility thanks to the deployment of Sergei Vladimir, the virus had already begun to seep into the nearby Raccoon City. In July, Umbrella deployed two investigation groups to the Management Training Facility in order to evaluate the state of the facility. The first group were wiped out by B.O.W.s, while the second group was led by Birkin and Wesker, and also met it's end.

September would mark the date of the completion of the G-virus. When Umbrella began to suspect William Birkin's treachery and his reluctance to hand over the now completed G-virus, Umbrella Europe dispatched the Alpha and Bravo divisions of the Umbrella Security Service to retrieve a sample of the virus. Birkin resisted, and was subsequently shot multiple times. The U.S.S. unit's success was brief, as Birkin injected himself with the virus, transforming himself into a horrendous creature. He tracked down his assailants and eliminated them one-by-one in the Raccoon City sewers, crushing the G and T-virus vials in the process. With the team wiped out (save for HUNK) the spilled T-virus was consumed by rats, who began to spread the virus throughout the town at an alarming rate, sealing Umbrella's fate.

In late September, Raccoon City was completely consumed by the T-virus. Hideous monstrosities roamed the streets, and the majority of the city's population of 100,000 were transformed into Zombies. Using the opportunity, Umbrella dispatched the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service to be used as test subjects, and sent several B.O.W.'s (such as the Hunter Beta and Nemesis T-Type) into Raccoon City to secure combat data. Five Tyrant T-103 units were deployed to the P-12A Incinerator Facility to annihilate a team of United States Special Forces sent to retrieve the G-virus and gain custody of Umbrella researchers. Sergei Vladimir on the other hand, personally sought to retrieve the U.M.F.-013 from Birkin's laboratory beneath Raccoon City. Eventually, the US government decided on bombing Raccoon City in the form of Mission Code: XX (Bacillus Terminate), an order Umbrella put forward but managed to delay until dawn, October 1st. With the launch of an experimental warhead, Raccoon City was wiped out.

1998-2004: Folding Umbrella

Immediately following the Raccoon City incident, ripples were sent through the US Government as they launched an international enquiry into the Umbrella corporation, eventually bringing them to the Supreme Court in a legal battle that would last right up until February 2003. Umbrella also lost numerous facilities due to the actions of Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield and Albert Wesker, losing Rockfort Island and the Antarctic Base. As well as this, numerous anti-Umbrella organizations began to crop up and public opinion of the company fell. Umbrella's stock also plummeted, sending Umbrella USA into complete bankruptcy in February 1999. The US government did not come out unscathed, as the deep pockets of Ozwell E. Spencer ensured that the best lawyers and false testimonies money could buy would shift part of the blame to the US government. At some point after the Raccoon City incident, the current Presidential administration came under heavy fire once its involvement with Umbrella was revealed. This led to the sudden resignation of the president and eventually, the new administration under President Graham set up a complete reformed structure which heavily opposed Umbrella and biological weapons. The US government set up it's own anti-Umbrella task force within US STRATCOM, charged with dealing with dangerous situations implicated by Umbrella employees, the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team.

With Umbrella now largely side-lined and unable to operate in the US and most of the world, the company began to use a private cruise ship, the Spencer Rain to operate outside of national boundaries, allowing them to secretly auction off their B.O.W.s and viral agents. As well as this, Umbrella dispersed its numerous assets, including B.O.W.'s and viral agents, around the world in "hangers" in order to store for later use should a solution to the company's problems be found. Umbrella also kept a disguised compound in the guise of a chemical processing plant in Siberia, Russia in order to store it's infrastructure and continue working on T-A.L.O.S., the last ace-in-the-hole for Umbrella. The U.M.F.-013 was also stored here. Following an attack on the facility by Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker however, the T-A.L.O.S. was destroyed and the U.M.F.-013 wiped. With Umbrella's ace-in-the-hole and entire infrastructure destroyed, the company's end was nigh. After Albert Wesker presented anonymous evidence to the Supreme Court, Umbrella was declared guilty of all charges relating to Raccoon City. Ozwell E. Spencer became a fugitive, and the company effectively ceased to exist, with the last division - Umbrella Japan - dying out on March 10th 2004 following a meeting of the board of directors.

Before it's dissolution, Umbrella attempted to continue it's illegal activities in secret by being bought out by another company. Due to the lack of interest and response to this, Umbrella eventually dissolved forever.

Umbrella Europe

Headquartered in Paris, France. Umbrella Europe operated as one of the two major contributors of Umbrella's biological weapons development. They had a long standing rivalry with Umbrella USA, who were making significant advances in the Tyrant program. While Umbrella USA were focused on the T-002 and T-A.L.O.S. developments, Umbrella Europe instead directed its efforts towards enhancing the intelligence of their creations and making them more adept at following complex instructions. Part of this involved the development of the NE-alpha, a parasitic organism that had the ability to consume host bodies. This would later become known as the Nemesis Project. The headquarters for Umbrella Europe was located in Paris, which was also where the majority of Umbrella Europe's critical research took place. Umbrella's 6th Laboratory was also located here, which served as the birthplace of the NE-alpha and the Nemesis Project.

Following the disaster that befell Raccoon City, Umbrella Europe was one of the few divisions of Umbrella that remained in operation. In 2002, they were responsible for the creation of the T+G-virus, a union of both the G-virus and a T-virus antibody. That same year, Morpheus D. Duvall - a disgruntled former researcher of the company - raided the laboratories in France and stole samples of the T-virus, as well as the experimental T+G-virus as part of his bid for power. Known key figures at the division included Christine Henri, the R&D Facility Head Manager who ordered the retrieval mission for the G-virus in Raccoon City.

Umbrella Europe ceased operation completely following the final Supreme Court case around March 4th 2003.

Umbrella Europe's research and development division was almost entirely made up of French researchers, and to this end Umbrella Europe is sometimes merely regarded as the "French Branch/Division".

Umbrella USA

One of the two key divisions that developed biological weapons for Umbrella. With operations throughout the United States, including Chicago Branch and Raccoon City Branch, Umbrella USA made many significant contributions towards Umbrella's B.O.W. programs - such as the development of the T-002 and the imitation of the T-A.L.O.S. project. Umbrella USA also maintained numerous facilities through America, with the Arklay Research Facility being one of the more prominent. Given their contributions towards weapons development, Umbrella USA was instrumental and critically important to the continued success of the company. Their early work led to the creation of the Tyrant program, as well as the synthesis of the first known sample of the G-virus. Known key figures at the division included William Birkin, the creator of the G-virus, and Joel Allman, the Vice President of Umbrella USA.

With the destruction of Raccoon City and increasing pressure from the United States government, Umbrella USA was dissolved in February 1999 after their company stocks plummeted and the government issued an indefinite suspension of business decree.

Umbrella Japan

Established in 1984 as Umbrella Japan Co., Ltd, this division of the company was created for the import and sale of chemicals that had been developed in the United States. Unlike the American and European divisions, Umbrella Japan was initially a small division of the company that did not participate in the development of bio-organic weapons. However, that soon changed. In 1987, the Umbrella Japan Research Facility was constructed with the intent of carrying out further research on biological products, under the pretense of utilizing biotechnology, original research and enhancing development of products. Following the Raccoon City disaster in September 1998, Umbrella began to suffer from political fallout on all sides. With the loss of numerous facilities and production lines, Umbrella Japan soon found itself to be the final operating division of the company. A meeting with the board of directors on March 10th, 2004 determined the division's fate.

On March 14th, 2004, Umbrella Japan ceased operation and closed its doors, effectively ending Umbrella for good.

Umbrella Antarctica

Comprised of the Antarctic Base and the Antarctic Research Facility located beneath it, this facility marked the center of Umbrella's operations in Antarctica. The division was established by Alexander Ashford, but was not officially established for the sale of products or chemicals, and was instead aimed purely at the development and transportation of B.O.W.s. Alexander also used the Research Facility to conduct the CODE: Veronica project. Due to this nature, it was not known to the public. Antarctica was chosen as an ideal location due to its remoteness and the lack of chance the virus had to propagate under such extremes.

Umbrella Africa

The African division of Umbrella, specifically West Africa, was set up in 1969 following the completion of the Umbrella Africa Research Facility and was situated at the site of the location of the Progenitor virus, and was primarily responsible for the cultivation and mass shipping of Progenitor samples to the rest of Umbrella's research facilities and laboratories around the world. The director of the division was Brandon Bailey, the head researcher of the research team responsible for the discovery of the Progenitor virus. Eventually, facilities such as Umbrella Plant 57 were established throughout Africa to accommodate actual B.O.W. research and development.

Umbrella Russia

Comprised of a single research facility in the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, the aptly named Umbrella Caucasus Research Facility made up the Russian division of Umbrella, established sometime after the fall of the Soviet Union following Ozwell E. Spencer's purchase of a previously government owned chemical processing plant. Deep underground levels were built to accommodate B.O.W. research and development as the upper levels served as a disguise. The facility was instrumental in the mass-production of B.O.W.s, and was the newest, and last, Umbrella facility to be built. From this facility, Umbrella distributed its illegal products to any factions willing to purchase them, in particular terrorist cells and militaries of the unstable regions of the globe.

Umbrella Asia

Not much is known about the Asian division of Umbrella, but it is assumed to have operated in similar capacity as Umbrella Japan, through the import and sale of products from Umbrella USA.

Security Divisions

Information Department

In order to keep themselves informed and reach out into other fields, Umbrella placed many spies and operatives throughout law enforcement agencies and other government institutions. Prime examples included the Raccoon Police Department, and the Special Tactics and Rescue Squad (S.T.A.R.S.). Realizing that he had reached his limits as a researcher, Wesker requested a transfer to Umbrella's Information Department and later was instated as the captain of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team in Raccoon City. Umbrella's intelligence service even went as far as the U.S government and the Senate.

Monitor

Under the direction of Sergei Vladimir, Monitor operated as an internal espionage agency within the company. The purpose of this organization was to keep tabs on employees of the company and to help root out any potential rogue elements. They also specialized in corporate sabotage, such as the destruction of evidence that would implicate Umbrella for any of their crimes. Monitor also carried out assassinations on employees that had turned against the company, a prime example of which being Greg Mueller. Nicholai Ginovaef was a prominent member of this agency.

Paramilitaries

Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service

Established by Sergei Vladimir, sometime following his arrival at Umbrella in the early 1990s. From the outset, the UBCS operated as the paramilitary arm of Umbrella. To the public eye, they were dispatched by Umbrella in response to V.I.P. abduction, corporate terrorism and handling biohazard outbreaks caused by "illegal" products. Commonly, they are also tasked with the rescue of civilians and Umbrella affiliates. In truth however, the UBCS was intended to be used as cannon fodder against Umbrella's creations in order to test their effectiveness against armed military targets in a live combat scenario. From this, Umbrella would be able to acquire combat data with which they could use to improve upon their products. The vast majority of the UBCS was composed of mercenaries and war criminals, men who had nothing to lose and were expendable in the eyes of Umbrella, and the world. The UBCS became the largest test bed for Umbrella's creations and biological weapons. Combat data is collected by a secret unit of "Supervisors" (also known as "Observers") who oversee the slaughter of their fellow men. Nicholai Ginovaef was one such Supervisor.Small units of the UBCS were commonly used to assist in internal espionage missions, such as the retrieval of the Nyx prototype in Raccoon City, a joint-operation with the Umbrella Security Service. They are still used as cannon fodder in these missions however, and serve mainly to provide backup and armed support, as well as security detail and general maintenance to high-ranking employees.

Umbrella Security Service

The Umbrella Security Service, otherwise known as the Umbrella Special Forces Unit, was the elite paramilitary unit consisting of professional agents that Umbrella had used for it's most secret of operations. Delta team was deployed by Albert Wesker and William Birkin to retake the Ecliptic Express passenger train, but were wiped out by swarms of leeches under the control of the revived James Marcus. Alpha and Bravo teams were both sent in by Umbrella Europe to retrieve the G-virus from William Birkin. However, save for HUNK, the entire unit met their end. The USS were primarily trained on the military training facility on Rockfort Island. One such example of the unit is HUNK, who was trained on Rockfort Island in 1996 and went on to successfully retrieve the G-virus from Raccoon City.

Like the UBCS, he USS is not under direct command of any specific division or branch of Umbrella, being one of the few assets the company at large was able to use independently. All top executives of each Umbrella branch were able to utilize the USS.

Anti-B.O.W. Squad

Trained on Rockfort Island, the Anti-B.O.W. Squad was a special military force maintained by Umbrella to help combat their out of control B.O.W.s in cases of emergency, such as in testing, training or research facilities.

Weapons Department

Umbrella Industry

Umbrella maintained a weapons department, known as "Umbrella Industry" which developed numerous weapons used in the handling of B.O.W.s, such as the Flamethrower, Spark Shot, Mine Thrower and Linear Launcher. Custom weapons such as the custom magnum issued to some Umbrella personnel were also manufactured by the same division.

Products

Pharmaceuticals

Safsprin - "The common cure". A product used to fight off small-time infections such as the common cold.Aqua Cure - A product that seems to be popular with women.Adravil - An ointment used to instantly close open wounds. Umbrella's main, most effective pharmaceutical product.Uspirim - A headache and migraine treatment product.

Ecliptic Express - Umbrella

The Ecliptic Express was an express train built alongside the Arklay Research Facility and Umbrella Management Training Facility, and operated on the railway which connected Raccoon City to the training facility. It's purpose was to transport Umbrella employees to undergo training at the facility. The rail system itself was privately owned by Umbrella, and was used extensively to transport materials and human resources to the two Arklay facilities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Umbrella Research Facility - Arklay Mountains

Also known as the Umbrella Research Center. The Umbrella Management Training Facility was built along with the Ecliptic Express rail system and the Arklay Research Facility within the Arklay Mountains and was completed in August 1968. It's purpose was to train future officers, executives and researchers of Umbrella, who would be the future of the company. The facility's first General Manager was James Marcus, one of the co-founders of Umbrella. Despite being head of the facility, Marcus cared very little about the actual training of staff. Instead, the facility was used by Marcus as a research lab for the Progenitor virus, and many Progenitor B.O.W.s were created here, such as the Eliminator and Plague Crawler.

The training facility was also the site of the genesis of the T-virus after it's successful development by Marcus in January 1978. However, after the successful seizure of the virus the facility was shut down the following July. Despite this, Marcus remained behind and continued his research in the abandoned facility.

Ten years later in 1988, Marcus was assassinated in an effort to obtain his research. With his death, the facility was abandoned completely for another ten years. During this time, Marcus' prized leeches managed to resurrect his will in the form of the Queen Leech. Soon, the facility became infested with the leeches, along with countless abandoned B.O.W.s.

This facility is also where Albert Wesker and William Birkin began their careers, and the two were the only ones to ever attract the attention of Dr. Marcus, who took a personal interest in them. The two would later retrieve a sample of the T-virus for Ozwell E. Spencer shortly after it's completion, leading to the facility's closure.

In 1998, Umbrella commenced the Reclamation Project under the leadership of Albert Wesker and William Birkin. However, the first investigation unit was wiped out by the leeches infesting the facility while the second investigation unit on route to the facility on the Ecliptic Express was also wiped out in the middle of the Arklay Forest by the same leeches.

As Wesker and Birkin watched events unfold behind the scenes and discovered Marcus' involvement, Wesker left to rejoin the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team while Birkin set off the self-destruct sequence in the facility, rendering the birthplace of the T-virus a mass of rubble on the morning of July 24th.

Arklay Mansion - Umbrella

The Arklay Research Facility was the first of many clandestine biological weapon research laboratories to be established by Umbrella. The facility was hidden beneath a mansion built in the forests of the Arklay Mountains on the outskirts of Raccoon City.History

In 1962, nobleman Ozwell E. Spencer ordered the construction of an elaborate mansion several miles outside of the then-small town of Raccoon City to serve as a retreat for executives of the corporation he intended to form several years later. The mansion was designed by renowned architect George Trevor, and Spencer ordered Trevor to design many nefarious traps, secret doors, and hidden spaces into the mansion. Work was completed in 1967, and to celebrate the completion of the mansion, Spencer invited Trevor and his family to stay in the mansion for a few days.

However, Spencer's true plans were to use the mansion as a front for a secret laboratory which would conduct research on the newly-discovered Progenitor virus. In order to protect the mansion's secrets, George Trevor was imprisoned and killed. His wife and daughter were used as some of the first test subjects of Progenitor.

The laboratory beneath the mansion was the site of several developments in the Umbrella Corporation's research. While the T-virus was initially developed elsewhere, at James Marcus's lab just outside the Umbrella Management Training Facility a short distance away, the virus was perfected at the Arklay facility by researchers William Birkin and Albert Wesker in 1988. Early successful applications of the T-virus, such as the Hunter series of Bio-Organic Weapons, were developed here, and much of the early research on the Tyrant program was conducted here as well. Further experiments involving the first successful Progenitor test subject, Lisa Trevor, led Birkin to discover the foundations of the G-virus.

An outbreak of the T-virus occurred in the laboratory on May 11, 1998. The outbreak was attributed to James Marcus, who was believed killed ten years earlier. Over the next two months, the entire staff of the Arklay Research Facility were killed or infected. In order to destroy any evidence of wrongdoing, Umbrella ordered Albert Wesker, now an intelligence officer in the corporation and the leader of Raccoon City's S.T.A.R.S. unit, to trigger the facility's self-destruct device. Wesker led his S.T.A.R.S. team into the mansion to obtain combat data against the facility's Bio-Organic Weapons, intending to destroy the facility when they were all dead. However, several S.T.A.R.S. members survived long enough to trigger the self-destruct mechanism themselves and escape by helicopter. The facility, including both the mansion and the laboratory beneath it, were obliterated, erasing all evidence of Umbrella's experiments. The Grounds

The mansion itself is a three-story plantation-style building with a spacious main hall and second-floor terraces on the front of both wings. Numerous hidden passages and traps are distributed throughout the structure, hiding key components of other traps and mechanisms leading to the laboratory itself. Behind the main stairs is a second stairwell leading deep underground to a crypt holding the body of Jessica Trevor, the first unsuccessful Progenitor subject. From this crypt, an elevator leads to a fountain which is not accessible from the main courtyard. This fountain hides a secret passage leading to the laboratory facilities.

Behind the mansion, and accessible from the main hall, is a graveyard with a large crypt. A roofed passage leads behind the mansion to the courtyard, from which the guardhouse can be accessed. The guardhouse (or "residence") is a single-story building with three dormitories, a recreation lounge, and a gallery; a secret passage in one of the dormitories leads to a large ring-shaped aquarium beneath the entire building, which is used to keep and study sharks. Also accessible from the courtyard by way of a secret passage is a network of abandoned mining tunnels.Arklay Laboratory

The laboratory facilities consist of four levels; the first is a simple passageway with access to the surface and to a heliport. The second level holds only a Visual Data and presentation room. The third level houses several laboratories, a dormitory for the lead researcher, a surgical room, a morgue, the laboratory's power system, and the facility's self-destruct device. The third level also allows access to a holding cell for prisoners or test subjects. The lowest level is used for special research projects, such as the Tyrant program.

Umbrella Caucaus Research Facility (HQ) Russia

The Umbrella Caucasus Research Facility was originally a Russian chemical plant before being bought outright by Ozwell E. Spencer. The facility would serve as a guise for Umbrella's last remaining full-scale laboratory, which was later built deep underground in 1998. The experiments and B.O.W.s produced here would later be sold to rogue states and terrorists, anyone willing to buy Umbrella's bio-weaponry following the Raccoon City incident. Such weapons included the Hunter Delta and Umbrella's ace-in-the-hole, the T-A.L.O.S. project. The Red Queen retrieved from Raccoon City was also stored here until 2003, as well as Umbrella's entire infrastructure. Sometime after the Raccoon City incident, Sergei Vladimir, a native to Russia himself, was put in charge of the facility with all operations being put under his command.

On February 18th 2003, the facility was raided by an anti-biohazard containment unit led by Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. As well as this team, Albert Wesker also led a one-man assault on the facility in search of Umbrella's infrastructure. Due to these circumstances, Sergei Vladimir leaked the T-virus throughout the facility, killing all of the staff and intending to escape with Umbrella's data, T-A.L.O.S. and the Red Queen. The facility's entire stockpile of B.O.W.s were also released. These efforts were for naught, however, as Chris and Jill managed to destroy the T-A.L.O.S. prototype, and Sergei himself was killed by Albert Wesker.

B.O.W. Developement

Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.'s) are the main focus of Umbrella's weapon development sector and encompass all organisms specifically engineered as weapons. The advent of these bio-weapons was due to the discovery of the Progenitor virus and its subsequent refinements which allowed Umbrella personnel to mutate otherwise harmless creatures into efficient weapons. This quickly became the focus of the company as a whole and led to a lucrative business on the black market.

A B.O.W.'s success is measured on its ability to cause panic, fear, and destruction; but above all, its ability to be controlled on the battlefield. This proved to be a difficult attribute to obtain and was the object of development within Umbrella for nearly two decades. Out of this research two projects specifically made considerable advancements and saw heavy development:

Tyrant program

Hunter program

The following B.O.W.'s are organized by their base organism's classification.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

T- Virus

The T-virus (short for Tyrant Virus) was Umbrella's breakthrough in viral weaponry spawned from an attempt to weaponize the Progenitor virus for military use and application. A mutagenic toxin, the T-virus would prove to be the basis for the majority of Umbrella's research. The very first strain of the T-virus was created by Dr. James Marcus, one of the original three founders of Umbrella who had helped to discover the base for the T-virus: Progenitor. Research was then carried out on the virus simultaneously by Albert Wesker and William Birkin and progress excelled at the Arklay Research Facility.

Origins and Loss

On September 19th 1977 during his research into leeches, Marcus had discovered a method of creating a new, more powerful virus using the Progenitor virus as the base element and mixing it with leech DNA. The result was the T-virus, a weaponized variant of Progenitor. The virus was completed on January 13th 1978. Shortly after, Marcus conducted experiments on several animal species including monkeys, insects and frogs (eventually leading to the development of the Eliminator, Lurker and Plague Crawler). While definite results were observed, Marcus ended the experiments with the belief that humans were the only viable test subjects. In the time that followed, many unwilling human test subjects were victims of Marcus' experiments - including several trainee researchers at the Umbrella Management Training Facility. Soon after his discovery, Ozwell E. Spencer, another founder of Umbrella who Marcus had recently come into bitter terms with, ordered a set few Umbrella employees to retrieve a sample of the virus from Marcus. However, they were unsuccessful, instead becoming specimens for Marcus' research.

However, this was remedied by Spencer's use of Albert Wesker and William Birkin, top pupils at Marcus' Management Training Facility who both Spencer and Marcus fiercely trusted. The two successfully managed to retrieve a sample of the virus, allowing Umbrella to continue its own research. In 1988, while Marcus was experimenting with the effects of the T-virus on his leeches, he was assassinated by Umbrella agents led by Wesker and Birkin. As Marcus was dying, Wesker and Birkin announced to him that his research was now in their hands.

New Owners

At this point, research on the T-virus was handed over to Wesker and Birkin, who were made chief researchers at the Arklay Research Facility. It was here that development on the virus rapidly advanced. The T-virus was shipped to all various branches and divisions of Umbrella who all began working on the virus itself, as well as the biological weapons it was capable of creating. Countless experiments were conducted, and countless products were produced. At first, the T-virus was experimented on average creatures such as dogs, which were given the B.O.W. codename of "Cerberus".

Soon enough, experimentation began on the more fierce creations of Mother Nature. Great White Sharks were injected with the virus, becoming even larger, even more fierce aquatic creatures dubbed "Neptune".

Thereafter, development was at a stand-still, as T-virus infection alone would not produce adequate weapons. However, to remedy this problem, genetic engineering was introduced. This method was widely successful even though the results were hit-or-miss depending on the subjects, as evidenced by the "Chimera". Umbrella's most successful B.O.W.s were created through genetic engineering, such as the "Hunter" species which was created through splicing reptilian DNA into a human egg. Once the T-virus was added, the result is a dangerous creature that is agile, swift and strong. Due to this success, development on the T-virus continued in order to find even more successful B.O.W.s.

Human Infection

As observed by Albert Wesker, any human infected with the T-virus would become a "Zombie", a mindless shell of a human being limited to an existence of feasting on human flesh. From this initial infection, the T-virus continues to shift the genetic structure of the host, resulting in the development of the "Crimson Head", and later the "Licker". This process was observed by the researchers at the Arklay Research Facility and dubbed "V-ACT", and begins once a typical Zombie is incapacitated.

Despite the disastrous effects of the virus, it's effect on human beings was only with a 90% infection rate. The remaining 10%, even if infected directly by a Zombie, would be immune to the effects of the virus. This is due to subtle differences in the human genetic code which affect compatibility. Ozwell E. Spencer scoffed at this notion, seeking a true 100% infection rate. In order to remedy this, the concept of using B.O.W.s to wipe out survivors was developed.

The Tyrant Program

Soon enough, the team at the Arklay Facility led by chief researchers Wesker and Birkin announced the pinnacle of biological weaponry. The B.O.W. in question is given the codename of "Tyrant", after the virus itself. The reason being that the Tyrant was to push the T-virus to its full potential. Unlike previous experiments, the Tyrant would not be an animal, but a human subject. The idea was to administer the maximum amount of T-virus to a human subject and adapt it fully to the host. However, a huge problem lay with the fact that only a set few people had the ability to become a Tyrant. As well as this, the strain of the T-virus used to create Zombies and Hunters was deemed unsuitable due to its tendency to destroy the subject's brain cells, limiting intelligence, which was required to successfully develop a Tyrant. In order to correct this issue, William Birkin developed a T-virus variant which would cause the least amount of damage to the brain.

However, the Genetic Analytic team at the Arklay Research Facility turned up another issue, only 1 in 10 million people would possess a genetic compatibility to the virus.

Although Wesker and Birkin succeeded in gathering a handful of compatible subjects, only two successfully became Tyrants, and yet only one was deemed a success. These two Tyrants were given the model numbers "T-001" and "T-002", the T again standing for Tyrant. Named after the virus which they utilize fully. T-001 was a success in theory, it presented all of the characteristics of a successful B.O.W, however the lack of further development into controlling the mutative and erosive nature of the T-virus meant that it was far from perfect. The T-002 was aimed at rectifying this issue. The T-002, unlike the T-001, was kept in development for a longer time to make further improvements, and was nurtured so as to reach its full potential. The T-002 was a vast improvement over the T-001, stronger, refined and able to be controlled and follow simple orders. However, even with the success that was the T-002, Umbrella still had the problem of finding compatible subjects.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, a one Col. Sergei Vladimir came to Umbrella, looking for work. Spencer, who was now majority shareholder of Umbrella, took Sergei in. Sergei became Spencer's chief enforcer and right hand man. However, there was another reason for Sergei's admission and quick rise to such a position; he was a compatible specimen for the Tyrant program. However, rather than take the risk of losing such an effective member of the company and run the risk of being the last Tyrant, Sergei allowed Umbrella to make ten clones of him. These clones would later go on to solidify Umbrella's place in the bioweapons industry, becoming the most successful B.O.W. which Umbrella had created; the T-103 line of Tyrants. Shortly after this, another team at Arklay announced development of the T-A.L.O.S., which used the T-103 as a base.

Nemesis

As usual, research on the T-virus continued, however focus was shifted to developing other viruses and methods in order to create better, more effective B.O.W.s. The major breakthrough lay in Umbrella's most-used sample specimen, Lisa Trevor. At this point, Lisa had been injected with almost every experimental virus developed at the time. Umbrella Europe had put virus development as a secondary priority, and had developed a parasite which would be able to boost the effectiveness of a B.O.W. by a large margin. The parasite was tested on the Hunter B.O.W., and results were satisfactory. Albert Wesker convinced William Birkin to order such a parasite, which was dubbed "NE-alpha". Once the parasite was delivered to the Arklay Facility, Wesker and Birkin immediately began running tests and gathering data, finally injecting the parasite into Lisa Trevor. The revelation that would succeed this event would become the basis for the G-virus, one of the aforementioned developments into a virus superior to the T-virus.

Research into the T-virus, as well as the Progenitor virus continued, becoming an example of corporate rivalry between the various Umbrella branches in order to see who could develop the best B.O.W.s. The main objective of this rivalry was to increase the intelligence of the B.O.W. while maintaining, or even improving overall effectiveness in the field. The Umbrella U.S.A. branch at the Arklay Research Facility headed by Wesker and Birkin had two projects, the T-002 and the T-A.L.O.S. project which used computer chips and machinery, while Umbrella Europe focused on the use of organic parasites such as the NE-alpha. Both methods achieved each research division's dreams of an intelligent, more effective B.O.W. At the heart of it all, development on the T-103 line became a mainstay for all branches.

Other Avenues

The research team at Rockfort Island, Umbrella's prison island and the training facility for the members of the Umbrella Special Forces, succeeded in developing a new strain of the T-virus. Unlike previous strains, this experimental version had major improvements. It was possibly transmitted by air, and had instant effects that took place within minutes. It also had a faster, wider infection rate, infecting the entire island within minutes of it's leak. The original T-virus normally had to spread from person to person or through a leak and the amount of time it took for transformation to take place ranged from hours, days to even weeks depending on the subject and whether the infection was secondary or tertiary. Both of these issues were supposedly resolved with the latest strain.

Another example of the new strain of the virus was showcased at the Umbrella Antarctic Base, several planes had taken off from Rockfort and crashed into the facility, carrying containers with the T-virus and spreading the virus. Within an extremely short time, the entire base was completely decimated. By the time Steve and Claire had arrived, monsters were literally crawling throughout the facility. This strain of the virus is deemed lost, however. The only known samples were on Rockfort and the planes that crashed in Antarctica. All of which have been destroyed.

Other attempts at developing new strains of the T-virus were the T-Veronica virus, developed by Alexia Ashford and the T+G-virus, aimed at harmonizing both the T and G viruses in order to bring the full potential out of both and correct the volatile nature of the G-virus while producing a deadlier, more effective B.O.W. This was developed by Umbrella Europe, the only remaining branch of Umbrella that was still in full operation (albeit it's activities were more underground) during Umbrella's trial before the Supreme Court in 2002.

Post-Umbrella

By March 2004, the last remnants of Umbrella were finally dismantled and research on the T-virus by Umbrella was brought to an end. Taking no chances after Raccoon City, the United States government authorized research on the T-virus in the hopes of creating a vaccine that could be distributed to the public. WilPharma, a pharmaceuticals firm, was tasked with this responsibility and as such set about researching samples of the T-virus - no doubt provided to them by the U.S. government. Unfortunately, part of this research involved the experimentation of the T-virus in India.

Following Umbrella's dissolution, countless strains of the T-virus wound up on the black market, likely perpetuated by former Umbrella employees, leading to a new age of bio-terrorism. Due to this, the B.S.A.A. (Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance) was founded under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, with one it's founding members being Chris Redfield.

In 2005, an outbreak of the T-virus afflicted an airport in Havardville. It is unknown what particular strain was leaked. Another outbreak occurred at WilPharma's own research facilities. This leak was committed by the duo of Frederic Downing and Curtis Miller. This incident was only one such example of bio-terrorism involving the T-virus, with numerous incidents occurring all around the world.

With the creation of a 100% effective vaccine, it is assumed that the T-virus is no longer a threat to developed nations.

Traits

The T-virus is the only known Umbrella-made virus that possesses the ability to infect almost all animal and plant species. Whether this attribute is an inherited trait from the Progenitor virus is unknown at this time. It is also known to go through rampant and sudden mutations on its own, depending on its environment, thus leading to the redundancy of many of Umbrella's own developed viral anti-bodies.

Secondary infection of an animal normally leads to:

rotting of the skin, congestion

deterioration of muscle fiber

extreme degeneration of intelligence

paralysis of pain sensations

metabolic activation

These physical traits can be found in almost all secondary infected T-virus creatures, namely Zombies, Cerberus and Eliminators. However, some species such as bats, scorpions and centipedes have been known to exhibit an extreme increase in size. This is a rare condition however and is more evidenced by plants than by animals. The extreme degeneration of intelligence is also dependant on species.

On humans, T-virus infection is only 90% effective, with the remaining 10% of the population having a natural immunity to the virus, even when directly bitten by a Zombie. As well as this, the rate of the infection is unique to each person, and can be influenced by several factors which may speed up or slow down infection.

While the T-virus' application ability as a viral weapon is minimal on its own, proper genetic engineering in conjunction with the virus and several animal species has led to the creation of the highly successful Hunter B.O.W.s. However this method is also relatively hit-or-miss depending on the animal species used, evident by failures such as the Chimera.

Plants, once infected with the T-virus, generally gain some form of sentience and, depending on species, increase in size. Some have also been known to gain a poisonous attributes. The first recorded T-virus infected plant with such an ability was the Plant 42 within the guardhouse of the Arklay Research Facility.

Treatments

There were three known vaccines to the T-virus that were developed in 1998, before and during the outbreak in Raccoon City. A perfect vaccine was later created in 2005. Anti-bodies were a pr

Raccoon Hospital Vaccine (Raccoon General Hospital)

The first was developed by Douglas Rover of the Umbrella Medical Service, which was developed in very small quantities but not enough to help stem the outbreak. This particular vaccine was later synthesized by Carlos Oliveria in an effort to cure Jill Valentine, who had been infected by the Nemesis T-Type. It is unknown if the vaccine was completely effective, as the T-virus within Jill was not destroyed, but merely put into a dormant state. Due to the lack of further samples of the vaccine, this cannot be ascertained.

Daylight (Raccoon University)

The second was the brainchild of Greg Mueller and Peter Jenkins, and was codenamed "Daylight". Developed at Raccoon University by the pair, it was a unique reagent that could suppress the growth of the T-virus. Daylight was comprised of the following components - P-base, which acted as the base for the vaccine. V-poison, derived from wasp venom as a culture catalyst, and finally T-blood - essentially blood taken from a creature infected with the T-virus.

However, the project was not entirely a valiant effort, as Greg Mueller had selfishly aimed to use the vaccine to destroy Umbrella, believing that a vaccine against their most valued viral agent would severely cripple the organization. Unfortunately, no samples of the reagent were retrieved from Raccoon University, which was destroyed by Nicholai Ginovef.

AT1521 (Umbrella)

The final vaccine was developed at the Umbrella Raccoon City Headquarters in Raccoon City, primarily by Michael Jenkins. It was Umbrella's only official attempt at synthesizing a vaccine for the T-virus. Despite this, it was only effective on those who did not show any symptoms. It does not eliminate the virus (unlike Daylight), instead it inhibits the virus' growth rate and slows it down. It was tested on lab mice with a 99.91% success rate. The only known sample was destroyed by the Tyrant (T-0400TP), however, additional samples may have been cultivated by former Umbrella researcher Linda, who knew how to re-create it.

T-Vaccine (WilPharma)

Developed by WilPharma. Following the Raccoon City Incident, extensive government sponsored research was carried out in the hopes of finding a vaccine. WilPharma was a key pharmaceutical company that worked on such a vaccine. To achieve their goals, WilPharma conducted human experimentation on test subjects in India with the resulting findings being used in the development and synthesis of a vaccine. In 2005, the vaccine had a successful trial run following a terrorist incident in India and soon after, samples of this vaccine were distributed to Harvardville Airport in response to an outbreak. All of the U.S. Marines involved in the clean-up operation were injected with the vaccine, who proved its success when they reclaimed the entire airport without any infections. All of the trucks carrying the vaccine were destroyed, but the last remaining sample was recovered from Frederic Downing by Leon S. Kennedy.

Anti-Bodies (Umbrella)

As well as vaccines, Umbrella made several attempts at creating viable anti-bodies to fight off infection. While some of these anti-bodies provided some results at slowing down the infection rate, their overall effectiveness was quashed due to the virus' mutative nature, rendering them virtually useless after a set period of time. Anti-bodies were administered to the many U.B.C.S. troops deployed during the Raccoon City Incident. T-virus anti-bodies actually find more use in the manufacture of other viral agents such as the T+G-virus and Uroboros virus.

Umbrella did however develop stronger, better quality anti-bodies. Whilst not 100% effective, they had a much higher defense than the ones administered to normal U.B.C.S. members. These anti-bodies were administered to the Supervisors among the U.B.C.S.

Anti-Bodies (Jill)

Due to the vaccine administered to Jill Valentine and her subsequent stasis in 2006, it was found that the vaccine actually did not immediately destroy the virus, instead putting it into a dormant state. When the virus reactivated, it soon disappeared due to an abundant amount of powerful anti-bodies within her body. These anti-bodies rendered her completely immune to the virus, and allowed Albert Wesker to correct the potent nature of the Uroboros virus.

G- Virus

July 31st, 1995

It had been 17 years since I first came here.

When I arrived this time, I remembered the wind. The scenery and buildings from the surrounding area hadn't changed a bit.

I saw Birkin standing on the helipad. He arrived before I did. Meeting with him somehow seemed nostalgic.

It had been 4 years since I had left the Arklay Research Center.

4 years ago, when Birkin's proposed "G-Virus" plan was approved, I put in a transfer request for the "special investigations" division within the company, and my request was immediately approved.

The fact that I had given up on being a researcher and needed a change probably seemed like a natural change that most people go through.

Actually, the truth of the matter was that "G" had already reached a level that was beyond my ability.

And even if I wasn't really here to discover Spencer's "true intentions", I think that, at that time, I would have definitely realized the limitations of my ability.

As the wind danced around the helicopter, Birkin was, as usual, fixated on some document.

Apparently, he was coming to Arklay on a routine basis, but he was no longer assigned here.

A while ago, he had been transferred to a huge underground research facility in Raccoon City. That was the main facility for his "G-Virus" research.

But to tell the truth, 4 years ago I really didn't think that Spencer would approve of "G". Because, it deviated from the idea of a "weapon" and it was created with too many unknowns left unsolved.

The big difference between "G" and the "T-Virus" was that a body infected with "G" would spontaneously continue to mutate. Of course a virus's genes are unprotected so it quickly mutates. But the cells within a living organism are different. Even if the subject’s genetic make-up had been altered by the virus, the cells within the organism's body rarely can be mutated.

Of course, by using external stimuli, such as radiation, you can make mutations occur within a living body.

However, a body that is infected with "G" continues to mutate, without any outer stimuli, until the host dies.

Even the "T-virus" has lots of attributes that are quite similar to "G".

It has already been observed that the genetic make-up of one of the "living biological weapons" (a person infected with the T-Virus), who has been placed in a special setting, has continuously "changed".

But in order for this change to occur it is necessary to use outer stimuli as a catalyst. And one can mildly predict which changes are likely to occur.

However, there are no such "laws" concerning a body infected with "G".

No one can predict just how someone infected with "G" will change. No matter what kind of method you use to try to cope with "G", it continually changes, making that "method" ineffective.

7 years ago Birkin noticed a little bit of this effect in the female test subject.

There wasn't the slightest change in her appearance, but deep within her something was constantly changing and she continued to co-exist with the virus used in the experiments.

And so after 21 years of inner mutations, even the "Nemesis parasite" just became one more mutation within her body.

The "G-Virus Plan" was a plan to push those characteristics to the utmost limit.

However, the thing that lay ahead could be an evolution to the "final form" for mankind...or it could be a finale in which the organism merely dies...

Could we really call that a weapon?

What was Spencer thinking when he approved this plan?

Even though I had been working within the intelligence sector for these 4 long years, I had still been unable to figure out what Spencer was planning.

And now Spencer has stopped coming to Arklay. Almost as if something that he has been eagerly awaiting and expecting had been set in motion. Spencer, like some mirage floating in the desert, had begun to grow farther and farther away from me. But I was sure that a chance would present itself to me eventually.

That was, of course, if I lived long enough to see that day.

Birkin and I got on the elevator and rode to the top floor. To the place where we had first met "her".

A man named John, Birkin's successor and new chief researcher, was waiting there for us.

He came from a research center in Chicago and was supposedly a very talented scientist but he was a little too straight-laced to be working at a place like this.

He began to question the inhumanity of what was going on in the labs and made his opinions known to the upper-level executives.

I had heard rumors about him in intelligence circles.

Everyone seemed to agree that if any information ever leaked out, he would probably be the culprit.

We ignored John and kept on walking, and then began the final disposal procedures on her.

"You must kill her". Those were the orders, as simple as that.

Due to her being infected with "Nemesis", although only a minor amount, she started to "think" and become conscious.

She started to act in grotesque ways.

Her behavior had continued to escalate and now she wore the face of another woman that she had peeled off just like a mask.

According to reports, she had behaved exactly the same way when initially injected with the "Progenitor virus" all those years ago.

I don't know why she began to act in such a way, but because she recently killed 3 researchers, the higher-ups had decided to dispose of her.

With the "G" research on the right track, there was no real use for a test subject like her anymore.

After constantly checking and re-confirming for 3 days the fact that she was indeed dead, her corpse was, as per the Facility Head's order, taken away somewhere.

In the end, I never did find out who she was and why she was brought here.

Of course, she was merely a test subject.

But still though, if she hadn't been here then there wouldn't have been any "G Plan". And Birkin and I would probably be leading different lives now.

I left the Arklay Research Center thinking that very thing.

I wondered how much of this was according to Spencer's "plan".

(3 years later the mansion "incident" occurred)

The G-virus (also known as the Gene Virus) was one of the most potent creations of Umbrella, and the pet project of Dr. William Birkin. It was capable of inflicting radical changes within the body of any organism that it infected. In short, it was considered by many to be the ultimate biological weapon at the time of it's creation. Research and development into the virus was halted due to the calamity that ensued following the Raccoon City incident, however the T+G-virus variant was created in an effort to control the erratic and volatile effects of the G-virus.

History

Discovery

The G-virus was the byproduct of years of research and hard work by William Birkin. Birkin had discovered the virus along with Albert Wesker while they were both chief researchers at the Arklay Research Facility. When they implanted Lisa Trevor with the NE-alpha parasite that they had acquired from Umbrella Europe, the organism was absorbed within her body and no visible effects were immediately noticeable. Intrigued by this development, the two researchers ran a series of tests and came across a startling discovery - the basis of which would later become the groundwork for the G-virus.

Research and Betrayal

With his research on the T-virus completed, Birkin immediately went to Umbrella and requested his own facility, equipment and personnel so that he could begin work on developing and refining the G-virus. In 1991, the G-virus project was authorized by Umbrella and Spencer soon granted Birkin the assets he requested. Work soon began on the construction of an underground research facility beneath the outskirts of Raccoon City. It was here that Birkin carried out the remainder of his research on the G-virus. Over the course of the next seven years, Umbrella began to grow dissatisfied with Birkin and suspected that he might be planning to betray them. To rectify this, Umbrella ordered the Umbrella Special Forces, Alpha and Bravo teams, to recover a sample of the G-virus.

It is important to note that Umbrella Europe was the branch responsible for the attempted forced acquisition of the G-virus, most likely either due to the rivalry that existed between the European and American branches, or the fact that Birkin was deliberately not handing any progress on the virus over to Umbrella or uploading any of the virus' data into the U.M.F.-0.1.3. During the raid on his laboratories, Birkin was mortally wounded by stray gunfire. As his wife Annette rushed to find medical equipment to treat her dying husband, Birkin injected himself with the G-virus and became his own life's work - the creature known as "G", or officially referred to as a "G-Type".

Traits

The G-virus has similarities to the parasite which it deviated from. It essentially does the same thing via a different method. The NE-alpha parasite takes over control of the brain and makes a new brain which then soon takes full control over the host. The G-virus completely rewrites the genetic structure of the host. Unlike the parasite however, it creates a completely new organism afterwards, the effects of which are immediately noticeable. In Birkin's second mutation and beyond, the G-virus was completely in control supplanting all of his human characteristics in a bid to create a new creature. The G-virus, unlike the T-virus, was not bound by one generation. It has the ability to carry on infection through a method of implanting embryos into other creatures so as to reproduce.

However, this can only be successfully done on a creature with blood ties to the original host which is why Birkin hunted down his own daughter, Sherry, so as to implant an embryo into her. Any other attempt at embryo implantation leads to the new host rejecting the embryo which by this time had fed off of the host for a time long enough to sustain itself. At this point, the G-virus forcibly mutates the creature and the result is a grotesque monster that is much weaker in comparison to a proper "G" creature. This creature can also spew out G-Embryos, however these embryos lack any ability to reproduce and are merely to aid in combat.

Another trait of the G-virus lay in it's difference from the T-virus. While the T-virus increases the metabolic rate of an organism while eroding many of the cells of the host, the G-virus revitalizes these cells leading to the complete rebirth of a dead host eventually leading to the creation of a new creature entirely.

While the G-virus excels in brute force in comparison to other viral agents, producing a B.O.W. of immense power, the virus did have an Achilles Heel preventing it from being applied in future efforts. While the T-virus would largely produce the same results in a human organism, a zombie, injection of the G-virus would provide erratic, volatile and unpredictable results. As well as this, the speed of reproduction and mutation cannot be calculated. The only known physical trait of the G-virus that is prevalent in any host infected with it is the production of a huge eye in the right shoulder of the organism. Beyond this, no G-Type creature is identical due to the virus' erratic nature.

Another weakness of the virus which prevented it's proper application as a weapon lay in it's volatile nature. Hosts infected with the G-virus generally maintain no intelligence beyond basic instincts brought on by the virus, and the constant mutations a host goes through following damage usually leads to a de-evolution to a giant mass of flesh. In order to rectify this issue, Umbrella Europe sought to control the volatile nature of the G-virus by combining it with a T-virus antibody. The result was the T+G-virus.

Treatments

DEVIL

A single vaccine exists in the case of accidental embryo implantation, developed by William Birkin as a precaution. This vaccine was codenamed "DEVIL" and was co-developed with the G-virus itself in Birkin's underground research facilities. After impregnation by the G-virus, Sherry Birkin became the first known recipient of "DEVIL". It is important to note however that the vaccine does not eliminate the G-virus itself, but rather suppresses the effects of the infection.

Progenitor Virus

Also known as the Mother, Founder, Clay and Primogenitor virus across various reports, the Progenitor virus was the foundation retrovirus on which all of Umbrella's molecular engineering research was built upon. The unique quality of the virus to dramatically modify a host cell without also killing the host lead to many discoveries including the T-virus and T-Veronica virus.

History

The Progenitor virus was discovered in the 1960's, and was officially "established" and named on December 4th 1966 by Ozwell E. Spencer, Sir Edward Ashford, and Dr. James Marcus. Details on how the virus was discovered were previously not available although it was theorized that Progenitor must have previously existed in an isolated system since its zoonotic attributes would have otherwise allowed it to become a trans-species pandemic. It is now confirmed to have been discovered in Africa, in an isolated underground cave system.

The virus's origins lay in a plant named Sonnentreppe (literally, "Stairway to the Sun") found in a region of West Africa. What led to it's discovery was a multi-volume series of books penned by Henry Travis, who happened to detail within his writings the Ndipaya tribe and their unique selection process for their kings; through the ingestion of the Sonnentreppe. Legend has it that a few individuals would be immune to the virus contained within the plant (later to be known as Progenitor) and would gain several enhancements following ingestion. Without natural immunity, the virus would lead to quick death due to its toxic nature. Spencer, who took an interest in the series for the folklore contained within it, was immediately intrigued and hypothesised that the plant held significance. An excavation was held, with Spencer being joined by his good friend James Marcus and fellow nobleman, Edward Ashford. Joining them was one of Marcus' students, Brandon Bailey, who was head researcher of the research team the three had brought along to the site. The plant's habitat was an underground garden known as the "Sun Garden".

Soon after the initial discovery the three scientists began researching the virus, but progress slowed as their laboratory necessities began to supersede their resources. In order to covertly grant their growing budgetary needs and hire additional researchers to aid in the progress, Lord Spencer suggested forming a pharmaceutical company as a front to their operations. In response, the Arklay Research Facility and Umbrella Management Training Facility were used as a means to research the virus. Meanwhile, Ashford left the research team with a sample of the virus to conduct his own studies along with his son Alexander Ashford. Deeming the excavation a resounding success, Spencer, Marcus and Bailey returned to the United States with samples of the virus, as well as the Sonnentreppe flower.

During the early months of 1967, difficulties arose with cultivating the Progenitor virus outside of it's natural environment. While the Sonnentreppe plants would grow exceptionally well, the virus would not be present.

The Arklay Research Facility became fully operational in 1967; however, Progenitor research was still being conducted feverishly by Spencer, Ashford, and Marcus despite a lack of proper facilities. Later that year on November 10th, Spencer secretly conducted the first human experiments with the Progenitor virus on the abducted Jessica and Lisa Trevor. Jessica was administered the "Type-A" strain while Lisa was injected with the "Type-B" strain and then moved to the underground Arklay laboratory for observation. Five days later, on November 15th, Jessica Trevor died from the viral infection while her daughter slowly degenerated physically and mentally. Lisa's persistent state between life and death became a breakthrough in Arklay's viral research and she was kept for many decades to come as both a premiere test subject and perpetual enigma. Spencer safely guarded her existence from anyone who was not directly working inside the Arklay Research Facility, including his peers James Marcus and Edward Ashford. The architect of the Arklay facility himself, George Trevor, was also originally meant to become a test subject for Progenitor, but he was disposed of by Spencer instead.

In March 1968, "Umbrella" was founded and the Progenitor research's focus became primarily military, most likely due to investments on the U.S. government's behalf. Meanwhile, James Marcus and Brandon Bailey returned to Africa in order to retrieve more samples of the Progenitor virus due to the inability to cultivate the virus elsewhere. The life of Edward Ashford was taken by a Progenitor infection when an experiment went out of control in July 1968-- no deformations were recorded. In August, the Umbrella Management Training Facility finished construction, and Marcus was subsequently transferred there as the first general manager by Spencer, leaving Bailey alone in Africa.

Unfazed by his colleague's death, Dr. Marcus conducted research on the virus at the Training Facility.

In 1969, the Umbrella Africa Research Facility finished construction, allowing samples of Progenitor to be produced and studied en massé and shipped throughout the globe to Umbrella's newly opened facilities. Brandon Bailey became the director and Chief Researcher of this new facility.

On September 19th 1977, Marcus finally made his breakthrough and created a radical new mutant strain of the Progenitor virus that he called the "Tyrant", or "T"-virus, by directionally evolving attributes of the leech genome into the Progenitor's own. The T-virus could induce radical mutations upon animals, finally giving Umbrella a weaponized variant of Progenitor and allowing them to produce B.O.W.s at last. The discovery was kept a secret fearing that his peers, especially Spencer, would extort his research for profit. Despite the secrecy, the T-virus was stolen by Albert Wesker and William Birkin under orders from Spencer sometime after its discovery.

Research and development into the Progenitor virus remained strong up to the day Umbrella was officially absolved, remaining the foundation for all new bioweapon research projects that ran simultaneous to the T-virus.

Further Research

Wesker Virus

Uroboros Virus

P30

With the abolishment of Umbrella, Progenitor research was taken up by Tricell, producing new results. One such result was the ancillary chemical "P30", which would temporarily give a subject superhuman abilities and make them highly susceptible to control. A recorded usage of this chemical was on Jill Valentine, who had a device implanted in her chest to ensure continuous administration of the chemical. The reason for this is that the chemical would quickly be metabolized and expelled from within the subject's system following injection, and would need continuous top-ups to ensure proper operation. It was sold by Tricell commercially and developed alongside the Type 2, 3 and 4 Plagas in order to garner additional funding for the Uroboros virus.

PG67A/W

Developed presumably by Tricell for use by Albert Wesker, "PG67A/W", or "Progenitor No.67 Albert/Wesker", was a serum developed to correct the erratic nature produced in the later stages of Wesker's infection with the experimental "Wesker Virus" administered to him by Ozwell E. Spencer. When administered in precise amounts it would correct the mutative nature of the virus, too much however was detrimental to Wesker's condition, and considered highly poisonous.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NE T-Virus

The "Nemesis-T Virus" is a variant strain of the T-virus created after synthesis with the NE-alpha parasite and secreted by a creature implanted with the parasite. The virus can however be cultivated with the liquid medicine, VT-J98. It is not known if it possesses any benefits or effects that differentiate it from the T-virus.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NE-Alpha

History

Initial Promise

Prior to the creation of the NE-alpha, Umbrella Europe had focused on operating directly on the brain of the B.O.W. in an attempt to improve intelligence, however results were mixed and progress was slow. The NE-alpha parasite, once administered to a subject would immediately begin to take control over the host from the brain, while developing a completely new brain in its place. The result was an enhanced intelligence and a much greater mental capacity for following instructions. Umbrella Europe immediately imported B.O.W.s from the American branch and began conducting experiments. The NE-alpha was first tested on an MA-121 Hunter Alpha and when results proved to be satisfactory, administration of the parasite to the T-103 series of Tyrant models was given the green light.

In 1988, the NE-alpha parasite was imported by Albert Wesker to the Arklay Research Facility where it was administered to Lisa Trevor. In a shocking turn of events, her body seemingly absorbed the NE-alpha within it with no noticeable effects. Later inspection heralded the discovery of what would later become the G-virus.

The Nemesis Project

A total of four T-103 Tyrants were imported for usage as test subjects and the parasite was implanted into the spine of the T-103's. Once inside, the parasite immediately began to catalyze the T-virus cells in the body and began its invasion of the brain. A new brain was formed behind the original and took over the initial tasks of the original brain. The NE-alpha also greatly enhanced the speed and healing ability of the T-103 while giving it the intelligence unlike that seen in any B.O.W. created by Umbrella.

All four T-103 models were implanted with the NE-alpha parasite. However, one of them maintained the capability of independent thought and attempted to escape. This marked the first time that the research team would see the impressive enhancements of the NE-alpha first hand. The subject was later reacquired and destroyed, with the remaining three models having their intelligence limited. The NE-alpha was officially given the title of " Nemesis", with the surviving T-103 models being renamed as "Nemesis T-Type", after the Greek God of Vengeance. One of the models, the Nemesis T-02 was later deployed via helicopter into Raccoon City to test its capabilities in live combat. In addition to this, its primary mission was to eliminate the surviving members of S.T.A.R.S., a mission that gave the Nemesis its name in reference to Umbrella wanting revenge against S.T.A.R.S. for destroying the T-002 and the Arklay Research Facility.

Capabilities

As a side effect of NE-alpha administration, the Nemesis will grow tentacles and a new virus compound will be created within it's body. This compound is dubbed the NE-T virus and is apparently a new strain of the T-virus with seemingly no added effects.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

T-Veronica Virus

The T-Veronica virus is a viral agent created by Alexia Ashford. It was created by the merging of the Progenitor virus and the remains of an ancient virus found within the genes of a queen ant. An unknown plant was used as a cultivation catalyst. Albert Wesker's successful retrieval of the virus enabled Tricell and The Organization to get their hands on a sample of the virus.

Effects

The raw form of T-Veronica was originally tested on Alexander Ashford. It had a severely damaging effect on the host, triggering the erosion of the host's cells, as well as their brain cells being completely destroyed due to the extreme rejection of the virus. The complete eradication of brain cells removed any form of intelligence from the host. Furthermore, this host began to emit a poisonous gas which only a specialized serum created by Alexia could cure, and the blue herb had no effect. This proved useless to the T-Veronica's original purpose, power with the retention of intelligence, so other methods had to be used; incubating the virus for 15 years at a sub-zero temperature.

Alexia speculated that the virus erosion could be delayed and perfect symbiosis could be achieved if the virus was allowed to get accustomed to the host's body through cryogenically preserving the infected host. She then used herself as a test subject and entered stasis for 15 years.

It can be speculated that T-Veronica possessed the ability to reproduce and go beyond the first generation much like the G-virus. This is backed up by Alexia's later ability to produce ants as she mutated.

T-Alexia

T-Alexia is used to refer to the form of T-Veronica within Alexia's body after she awakened from her 15 years of cryogenic sleep. This strain has noticeably different effects to the raw form used on Alexander. If the host is able to co-exist with the virus, they have the ability to retain their human form and characteristics without any deterioration of intelligence or body flesh. Alexia was able to stay in her human form while being infected, and could transform at will. Alexia's blood also combusted upon exposure to air, and she was able to control various tentacles. As she received more damage, she mutated into what resembles a queen ant, with a large abdomen which was capable of creating ant spawn, which she could control. Her arms also mutated into dragonfly-like wings in this form.

After her abdomen was destroyed, Alexia was able to detach herself and fly around, very agile, like an insect. She was destroyed in this form by a special anti-BOW linear launcher. It is believed that throughout all of her mutations, she retained her intelligence. Alexia was able to control her spawn, as well as the infected ants.

This adapted strain was also used on Steve Burnside. Although Steve was not immune or able to co-exist with the T-Veronica virus as he had not had the same 15 year adaptation period, he was still able to have a limited amount of independent thought during his mutation, as he stopped himself from attacking Claire. He was also able to revert to his human form after regaining his intelligence and will following this event.

T-Alexia infected hosts with full adaptation to the virus, such as Alexia, have the ability to revert to their human form at will. Others that have not bonded to the virus such as Steve are only able to do so provided they go under an extreme mental abnormality, provoking their thought process and enabling them to revert to their human form. It is likely that this ability in non-adapted subjects can only be used in a set amount of time before the virus completely erodes the subjects cells.

Infection Rate

T-Veronica's infection rate is very low, and can only be transmitted via direct injection. It is unlikely that it could be transferred via blood transfer, as the host's blood is combustible with air.

T+G Virus

The T+G-virus was Umbrella's attempt to fuse the T-virus antibody with William Birkin's G-virus in a bid to find a new way of mass-producing third generation B.O.Ws through limiting the mutative effects of the G-virus. It was hoped that mutations would thus be inhibited from going out of control, whilst still creating a powerful Bio-Organic Weapon which would have added benefit of generating an electrical field around itself for both offensive and defensive purposes. The only known sample was stolen from Umbrella's Paris laboratories by Morpheus D. Duvall, and used in his bid for power against the world.

History

Initial Failure

In an attempt to merge the two viruses together and correct volatile nature of the G-virus, Umbrella conjured a method of fusing the G-virus with a T-virus antibody. A byproduct of this fusion was an electrical current, which rendered the subject immune to conventional weapons. The first attempt at implementing the virus strain reagent "v.0.9.1" into a organism was largely unsuccessful. A Tyrant was created, but it did not possess the electrical current byproduct and featured a critically exposed weak point. It also sprouted tentacles in the place of claws and an overall degenerated appearance. This Tyrant was given the designation of "T-091".

Morpheus

The second attempt was a resounding success. A rogue Umbrella researcher Morpheus D. Duvall, after being severely injured in a grenade blast on the hijacked Spencer Rain injected himself with the T+G-virus reagent "v.0.9.2" stolen from Umbrella's Paris facility in a bid to prolong his life. Unlike the first tyrant, Morpheus (pre-emotively given the "T-092" designation) had no ill-effects. The electrical current was present rendering him invulnerable to conventional weaponry. He also grew claws, as typical of most tyrants. Speed was also improved along with a vastly improved nervous system, giving him the ability to dodge most attacks at a frightening speed. After the subject sustained enough damage, the virus began to break down from it's harmonized fusion as the G-virus began to override the T-virus antibody causing striking mutations at an alarming rate. This was due to the T-Hunter weapon having broken down the T-virus antibody, allowing the G-virus to mutate uncontrollably with all of the damage sustained.

Just like William Birkin's transformation in Raccoon City four years prior, Morpheus began to change at an alarming rate. In the space of a few minutes, he became a gigantic blob. After he sustained even more damage, the effects of the G-virus began to take place at an even faster rate, becoming even bigger than previously to the point where his own body exploded.

Wesker Virus

Developed by Ozwell E. Spencer to serve as the selection process for the Wesker Children project in an effort to filter out the more "special" of the children, this experimental virus was administered to each and every Wesker Child through numerous means. The virus would give the host superhuman strength, speed and agility at a genetic level. Due to these features, it is believed to be a direct derivative of the Progenitor Virus, which also exhibited similar traits under certain genetic conditions. Unfortunately, the process was ultimately erratic, and most of the Wesker Children were killed in the process. One of the only remaining survivors was Albert Wesker.

Albert Wesker's sample was administered to him through his long-time friend William Birkin. Whether Birkin was actually aware of the virus' true origins is unknown, as Birkin himself wrote that it was from a "mutation stock". This may be true to some extent in that the virus is a variant of the Progenitor Virus.

The virus was later used in conjunction with the Uroboros Virus as a part of Albert Wesker's "Uroboros Project", supposedly to strengthen the test subject.

umbrella reports and experiments

Virus Information

Progenitor Virus: The forerunner to the T-Virus, it was used on Jessica and Lisa Trevor and probably a number of other subjects. The T-Virus was developed from this work.

T-Virus: The virus developed by Umbrella, it can infect a large variety of life forms, re-animating many who succumb to it's infection as zombies, transforming some plants and animals into giant versions of themselves, mutating some creatures into bizarre and hideous creatures, and can be used along with genetic engineering to produce B.O.W.s. It stands fro Tyrant Virus, and is the virus that must be used to create the ultimate aim of Umbrella's research, the near-unstoppable biological killing machines called Tyrants. However, to create a Tyrant the subject must have a very particular genetic pattern allowing them to survive the process. Only 10 people in the United States have the correct DNA, but it is unknown how many Tyrants have been made, with only three having been seen by non Umbrella personnel.

G-Virus: The strain of T-Virus developed by William Birkin, it acts much like the T-Virus, except in constantly mutates it's host, theoretically producing a monster that cannot die. However, only a direct and massive exposure to the pure G-Virus will affect this mutation, meaning that secondary exposure results in the same effect as the T-Virus. William Birkin successfully transformed himself after being wounded by Umbrella operatives, and was defeated numerous times but continued to mutate, posthumously proving the success of his work. However the continued transformations eventually let to his becoming little more than semi-sentient slime with teeth and tentacles, and he was destroyed in an explosion by Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy.

T-Veronica Virus: This version was developed by Alexia Ashford and she designed to co-exist with it's host, hopefully allowing the host to control it and retain their intellect (all the other virus's create either automatons or mindless monsters). She succeeded, but that catch was that to keep their minds, the subject had to be frozen for 15 years to be able to stabilize with the virus. Alexia did this, and so became able to control her virus within her, mutating at will to fight Albert Wesker and Chris Redfield. She was forced into increasingly more dramatic transformations in order to combat Chris Redfield eventually perishing at his hands. However the weakness of the co-existent virus was exposed when Steve Burnside, mutated into a mindless monster by Alexia, managed to reverse the effects of his mutation and return to human form. He died soon after, but it is unknown if this was the result of the change or injuries inflicted prior.

The Nemesis Parasite: This is mainly a lot of conjecture and observation, so may not be totally accurate) Developed by Umbrella France, this parasite mutates its host in many ways, making it incredibly resilient to damage, and giving it astounding regenerative abilities. It also appears to have the side affect of producing numerous tentacles through the host's body, with more being exposed or being created as the host is wounded. Lisa Trevor was infected with the Nemesis parasite, but (perhaps due to the massive amount of prior experimentation on her) she consumed the parasite and lived, proving to be indestructible to the weapons available to the S.T.A.R.S. team. The Nemesis, on the other hand took massive amounts of firepower and damage at the hands of Jill Valentine, slowly losing it's original shape as it's body sprouted more and more tendrils and mutated further in response to the havoc wreaked upon it. Albert Wesker theorized that a cheaper and easier to produce version of the Tyrant could be made using the Nemesis Parasite, but the instability exhibited by the subjects makes them far less reliable than the Tyrants.

Nemesis Report

Official Transcript

Origins of Nemesis

The unknown character that stalks Jill, widely known as "Nemesis", is actually Umbrella's T-virus B.O.W. test subject "Nemesis T-Type". It means "Goddess of Vengeance", and it was nicknamed "Nemesis” by its research team, as they were going to make S.T.A.R.S. members pay for what they did to the Tyrant.

Nemesis was a B.O.W. developed by the European branch of researchers in Umbrella Headquarters, as a parasite that aimed to control any T-virus B.O.W. When the parasite is implanted into a B.O.W., it will control the body and also enhance its combat effectiveness.

Although T-virus B.O.W.s are being researched and developed by every research team in all Umbrella branches, all results produced were mostly failures, which ended up with low intelligence. In the military, besides combat, the intelligence to understand and follow orders is important too.

The American branch research team under William Birkin, after countless attempts to control DNA, succeeded in making the Tyrant T-001. Shaped like a human and with the high combat effectiveness of the Tyrant, it gained a large reputation in Umbrella Headquarters. However, it lacked intelligence.

On the other hand, the research team in the European branch, unlike Birkin's research team, focused on enhancing the B.O.W.s intelligence. Countless theories and attempts were made. At first, they tried the operation method, that is, improving the level of intelligence by operating on the brain of the B.O.W. Now, they had advanced the level of their research to the point of increasing the intelligence of the BOW by just inserting a parasite. The team imported a lot of B.O.W.s from the American research team under Birkin, and made many experiments.

As the American branch under Birkin successfully improved and created a better Tyrant, the "T-002 model", which can follow simple orders easily, the European research team had created a test product parasite, the "NE-Alpha".

The "NE-Alpha" was tested on the B.O.W. "Hunter", and again countless experiments were made. To better demonstrate the result, the European team imported many new Tyrants, the "T-103 model".

At this time, the parasite had already gone through many modifications, and this was implanted into a Tyrant and was called the "Nemesis T".

Ability of Nemesis

The Nemesis parasite was implanted into the spine of the Tyrant. In this case, the parasite catalyses the T-virus cells in the body and the result is an invasion of the brain by the new bunch of cells, gaining the control of its cerebrum.

Nemesis will form a second "brain" behind the original one, taking over the jobs of the former brain. The organs will be under the control of the "Nemesis". Its healing ability and speed will be greatly enhanced by the Nemesis, but the most significant improvements will be from the results of the improved intelligence of the Nemesis. As time passes, the Nemesis will take over control of the main and former brain too.

The Europe branch research team developed 4 Nemesis T models. One of the Nemesis' maintained the capability of independent thought during a stage of development, and attempted to break free. Although the Nemesis was based on the
Tyrant-T103, the great results of the parasite shocked the developers themselves.

The Nemesis was destroyed, and the rest of the Nemesis' got their intelligence "restricted".

In the Raccoon City incident, the Tyrant sent into action was the second model of the Nemesis, the "Nemesis-T02", which had undergone the longest period of training.

(NEMESIS NORMAL MODE)
The Nemesis T-02 is very smart. Smarter than the Tyrant that Umbrella had been using. The Rocket Launcher that Nemesis uses in this game is designed specifically for Nemesis, and is too heavy for a human to carry, let alone operate it.

Records have shown that Nemesis has many more weapons up its sleeves, such as the COMBAT KNIFE, 65' HANDGUN, ASSAULT RIFLE and even a GRENADE LAUNCHER.

(NEMESIS CAUTIOUS MODE)
Although the black armor of Nemesis is slightly bullet proof, under heavy fire, Nemesis will still sustain damage. Then it will turn to "cautious" mode. There is no significant change in appearance, but the defense system will cause it to use part of its tentacles as a weapon now. In normal mode, the tentacles were only used to inject the NE-T virus into its victim. Now, the tentacles contain a liquid compound, which affects the nervous system of the victim, restricting the victim’s movement.

(NEMESIS 2ND MODE)
After sustaining heavy damage, Nemesis will produce a type of secretion that speeds up the reaction of its cells. The result is the recovery of wounds, but it severely affects the normal recovery system when it is in normal mode. As the speed of the cell reactions becomes faster, the appearance of Nemesis will begin to transform, bringing it more further than a human face. Under this condition, Nemesis will slightly enlarge a little, and the tentacles now loosen up, flowing more freely than usual. This will mean a greater tendency to infect a human and is therefore much more dangerous.

Unlike Tyrant, Nemesis will not go berserk under a mutation.

(NEMESIS 3RD MODE)
After Nemesis had gone through much more damage, some of the functions of Nemesis were disabled. This in turn spikes a mutation. Nemesis will lose its head when it undergoes this final weird mutation, and this time, even Nemesis will not be able to withstand the mutation and will go out of control.

Nemesis will start devouring all sorts of living creatures it comes across in order to obtain the nutrients needed to grow bigger.
The tentacles will wrap and tangle around its self to form the limbs that replace the hands and legs, which had gone amiss during the mutation.

The fast chemical reaction inside the internal body of the Nemesis will start to create a conflict between the T-virus cell and the Nemesis cell. The confliction of the 2 virus cells will cause a chain reaction in which they will swell together as a result, bursting out of the body of the Nemesis like a bubble, and spat out as a highly acidic compound of the T-virus and the Nemesis-T virus!

Despite the mutation, Nemesis will never forget its mission... to wipe out the S.T.A.R.S.

The Reason To Send In Nemesis

The reason to send Nemesis into Raccoon City was to eliminate the surviving S.T.A.R.S members.

The Umbrella HQ decided to send the Umbrella Special Forces Unit (USFU) into Raccoon City to assassinate William Birkin. They planned to kill him and steal his G-virus before he betrayed Umbrella by joining its rival companies.

But, Umbrella knows that should the S.T.A.R.S. members know their plan, it will be difficult for Umbrella to carry it out. Since the mansion incident, S.T.A.R.S. members had discovered the true face of Umbrella. There are reports that the surviving S.T.A.R.S. members are planning to make an attack on Umbrella. Although the reports are still uncertain and there have been no obvious signs of action from the S.T.A.R.S. survivors, Umbrella is still very wary of them.

If William Birkin has the S.T.A.R.S. members on his side, he might expose Umbrella's illegal activities. Should that be the case, Umbrella will have to go against the U.S itself. Even though the U.S. government is one of the secret customers of the B.O.Ws themselves, they will have no choice but to face the Umbrella Corporation from the pressure of the public when Umbrella gets exposed. If things got worse for Umbrella, they might even find themselves going against the rest of the world as well, which of course, will be something too much for Umbrella to handle.

Sensing this danger, the higher ups of the Umbrella Corporation decided to send in the Nemesis-T type. Although the Nemesis Tyrant is an expensive B.O.W. product (budget), because S.T.A.R.S. had even defeated the Tyrant T-002 before during the mansion incident it would be wise of them to send in a better tyrant this time instead, thus the Nemesis.

Other than that, Umbrella has sent 6 T-103 Tyrants to Raccoon City as well. They were supposed to be in the mid-air of Raccoon City for emergency, ready to be sent into the R.P.D. at anytime if the Umbrella Special Forces Unit failed in their mission. But on September 29th, all Tyrants were sent into action.

The Experiment

July 31, 1978

The first time I visited that place, it was the summer of my 18th year. That makes it about 20 years ago.

As I got off the helicopter, I remember the sight of the swirling wind that the blades whipped into the air. When viewed from above the old mansion seemed quite normal, but when seen from the ground there was something foreboding and unapproachable about it. Birkin (my junior by 2 years) seemed, as usual, to only be concerned with his research notes.

We were assigned to the mansion 2 days earlier, on the day that the executive training center we had previously been attached to was closed. It all seemed like it was planned and too much of a coincidence. But probably the only person who knew the real truth was Spencer.

Spencer was one of the main guys in charge of America's "T-Virus" research at the Arklay Research Facility.

As soon as we got off the helicopter the head of the facility was standing in front of the elevator ready to greet us.

I can't even remember the guy's name. Who really cares about formalities and figureheads like him? From that day on, the Arklay Research Center was ours. As Chief Researchers, we were put completely in charge of all aspects of the facility. Of course that is just how Spencer had planned it all out. He chose us.

We ignored the facility head and got on the elevator. I had already memorized the building layout the day before, and Birkin, although he has no bad intentions, never really paid much attention to other people.

Most people probably get pretty irked within the first 5 seconds that they meet us.

However, the facility head had no reaction at all.

Back then I was a young buck completely full of himself, so I didn't really pay the facility head any mind.

But in the end, I was really only Spencer's puppet. And the facility head, whose boss was also Spencer, at least actually knew what Spencer was up to, and what he was thinking.

The whole time we were riding in the elevator, Birkin never took his eye off of the documents he was holding.

The document that Birkin was scrutinizing so closely was a report about a new virus that had shown up in Africa. It was called "Ebola".

At this moment there were many people, all throughout the world, who were studying the Ebola Virus. However, there were two major reasons why they were studying it. To help people and...to kill them.

As you probably know, the death rate of someone infected with Ebola is 90 percent. In 10 days it quickly destroys a person's organs. Even now, there are no known ways to prevent it or cure it. It could, quite possibly, destroy a large part of the human race.

Of course even before this, due to the "Biological Weapons Prohibition Pact", it was illegal for us to study the virus as a weapon. However, even if we weren't the ones to research it, there was no proof that someone else wouldn't be doing that same thing and so it was considered acceptable for us to research it--just in case. There is a thin line in international law between what is acceptable and what is prohibited.

And so, it became necessary to research how the virus would be used as a method of prevention, not as a weapon. There really is no difference in the way in which you research a virus as a cure, however, from how you research it as a weapon.

Since the two are very similar, it is possible to pretend you are researching a cure, while in fact, be researching the virus as a weapon.

At that time, even though Birkin may have been looking at the Ebola report, he wasn't really researching the Ebola virus. The Ebola Virus had too many "weak spots".

First of all, the virus could only survive for a few days if not inside a human body. It would soon "die" if under sunlight (ultra-violet light) for too long.

Secondly, since it kills the host too quickly there isn't enough time to transfer/infect other hosts.

Finally, the virus is only transferable through direct touch and so it can be easily prevented.

Try to imagine the following: If a person who was heavily infected (the disease had spread all throughout their body) could actually stand and walk around? And, without knowing it, was in direct contact with other people, of their own accord...

What if the RNA of the Ebola Virus could actually alter a person's genetic code? And if, through that, a person was able to carry the virus without dying? What if this person had the resilience of a beast?

That is, wouldn't this person be a "living dead" whose body carried the virus? Something that could infect others, sort of like a "living biological weapon".

I guessed that we were lucky that the Ebola Virus didn't have the potential to do such things.

I wondered if we would be successful in holding on to such a virus without it getting into the wrong person's hands?

The Arklay Lab headed up by Spencer was built for that purpose, it seemed. To create a disease capable of the characteristics I listed above. Officially it was just a pharmaceutical company researching cures to viruses, but the truth is, it was really a factory for manufacturing biological weapons.

The origin of the company was based on the creation of the "Mother" virus by recombining genes.

In order to produce "biological weapons" out of this new "Mother", or “Progenitor” virus, Spencer and his team of researchers began studying "virus mutations" in order to strengthen the virus they had created.

This was known as the "T-Virus" experiment.

RNA based viruses can easily be mutated. Through those mutations, it is possible to strengthen their traits.

The reason Birkin was so interested in the Ebola Virus was that he was thinking of recombining the Ebola genes with the “Progenitor” virus to strengthen its attributes. By the time we had arrived at the research center there was already a sample of the Ebola Virus waiting for us.

We changed elevators several times and finally reached the upper level of the complex. When we arrived even Birkin looked up.

It was the first time we had met "her".

We hadn't heard a single word about "her" before. She was a secret of the utmost confidentiality at the research center. And they didn't let any information about her out of the compound.

According to the records, she was at the research center from the very moment it was first built.

She was 25.

But we didn't know her name, nor why she was here.

She was to be used as the experimental subject host for the T-Virus. The day they had begun experimentation was November 10th, 1967.

They did T-Virus experiments on her for 11 years running.

Birkin mumbled something.

Maybe they were words cursing our situation. Maybe they were words of praise. In any case, we had come to the point of no return now.

We had two choices: to succeed in our research...or to lay here rotting like she was. Of course that meant we really only had one choice.

She was bound to a "pipe bed" and something about her made me think...

Had this been a part of Spencer's plan all along?

(The report continues 3 years later)

Alexia I

July 27, 1981

Today, a 10 year-old girl was sent here, as a chief researcher, from Umbrella's Antarctica Research Facility.

Her name was Alexia Ashford.

I was 21 and Birkin was 19.

As annoying as it was, the whole Arklay complex was rampant with rumors of "Antarctica Alexia". Nobody talked about anything else.

Her family had been with Umbrella since the beginning. The older guys at Umbrella knew the legendary Ashford name.

Before, if we ever reached a dead end in our research, one of the old timers would say "if only Professor Edward were still alive"...

If I remembered correctly, "Edward Ashford" was one of the people who first discovered the "Mother Virus" and was one of the scientists who originally planned the creation of the T-Virus.

However, he died soon after Umbrella was founded. It was 13 years since his death. So was there really anything to gain by having high expectations of the "Ashford" lineage?

And, in fact, the Antarctic Research Center founded by his son hadn't yielded a single result.

Didn't people understand the limits of Alexia's smarts? She was only Edward's grandchild after all.

But from the day she came, our worthless, good for nothing subordinates began to say "It's a good thing Alexia is here".

She may have been from a famous family, carrying great genes within her, but nonetheless, I knew it was going to be a real hassle having subordinates with such a lack of good judgment.

It's idiots like that, who, if they accidentally stuck their foot in a bucket, wouldn't be able to move or figure out what to do unless someone told them.

At least I could still tell the difference.

However, if, at that time, I had allowed myself to get upset over the whole thing, it would have just slowed down our progress on the T-Virus research.

Unless you can keep cool and still be decisive no matter what the circumstances, then success will always evade you.

At that time I was thinking this:

By making good use of the past, we could definitely yield good results. And if some of those "old timers" could feasibly die at any second, then they would make great test subjects.

After all, do you think it is possible to stand above the people if you can't rationally use them as human “resources" as well?

However, the problem was Birkin.

The way he reacted to the Alexia rumors was terrible.

He never really said it, but for Birkin, the fact that he was the youngest person to ever be a chief researcher was always something he was proud of.

That pride was severely injured by having a mere 10 year-old become a chief researcher. It was probably the first time someone so talented as he had ever tasted defeat.

He just couldn't accept this "younger girl of good lineage".

To be made a fool by someone who hadn't gotten any results. Someone who had worked so far removed from the lab before.

The fact that he couldn't get over it showed his immaturity.

However, even though he was still immature, no matter what, I had to bring him back to his senses.

It was during these three years that our research moved up to the 2nd level.

It was at this point that we fixed upon the idea of making a "living biological weapon". We started to call the "T-Virus" by a new name -- "Zombie".

However, it was impossible to get a 100% infection ratio. Within people there is a subtle difference that the virus couldn't totally overtake. It seems compatibility was a major factor, then.

About 10 percent of the people who were injected with the "Zombie Virus" didn't get infected. And this was something that, no matter how hard we researched, we just couldn't overcome.

A disease that would affect 90 percent of all humans seemed to me to be quite an effective weapon, though. But Spencer didn't see it that way. Spencer said that he was hoping for a specialty virus that could easily wipe out everyone.

But, why in the world would he want something like that?

One important characteristic of biological weapons was that they could be developed cheaply. However, the "biological weapon" that we were researching started to become very costly.

If Spencer was in it just for the money, then he probably wouldn't have chosen to spend the extra money on researching a specialty virus that infected and wiped out 100% of its victims. It just wasn't financially worth it.

Why would he want to ignore all financial concerns just to continue the research?

If by changing the idea of war (through biological warfare) he was attempting to monopolize all military industries, then I would have understood that, but...

Even to this day, I have no idea what his true intentions were.

But whatever Spencer's real reason, Birkin was planning on making a biological weapon that would increase a country's military might.

Not to just manipulate the genes of the "T-Virus", but also by adding other genetic data he was planning on creating "him". A military biological weapon that could annihilate those who went unaffected by the virus, as well as people who were wearing anti-viral gear and equipment. This weapon was later named "Hunter".

However, that experiment was temporarily put on hold. In order to protect the test subjects from Birkin.

Birkin's pace was quickened by Alexia's existence. He began to act "out of the ordinary". He would stay at the lab for 24 hours straight. Attempt experiments that he hadn't really thought out.

I tried to use other researchers to get as many samples from the subjects before they died, but I just couldn't keep up with his pace.

The head facilitator brought in a new subject, as if nothing had ever happened. But she, too, soon died.

It was hell.

And within that hell there was but one person living -- the female test subject that continued to live on. She was already 28 years old. Having lived 14 of her years in this research facility. Someone whose consciousness had been taken away by the "Progenitor” virus that had been injected into her 14 years ago. Someone who, if they did happen to still retain any humanity, would only hope for death.

But she continued to survive.

Why was only she able to survive this long? Her basic experiment data and that of other subjects seemed to be the same.

It would still take a long time for us to solve this riddle.

(The report continues 2 years later)

Alexia II

December 31st, 1983

The winter of my sixth year at the Arklay Research Center.

For the past 2 years, there were no significant results and time seemed to just stagnate, but before long we had a breakthrough.

The thing that started it all was a report we got that morning.

Antarctica Alexia had died.

The cause of her death was that she accidentally got infected by a virus that she, herself, was researching. It was called the "T-Veronica Virus".

Alexia was 12 years old. It seems she was just a little too young to be undertaking such dangerous experiments.

There were many rumors to be heard. One particular rumor actually suggested that she injected the "T-Veronica" into her own body. But no matter what the circumstances I find that particular "theory" to be implausible.

Probably she was just so shaken up over her father's disappearance a few months earlier that she just made a mistake in the experiment.

After that, Alexia's last remaining blood relative, her twin brother who had worked in the Antarctica Research Center came and picked up her work where she left off. But no one had any expectations of him.

In the end, the Ashford family was basically dead...without even yielding a single advance for the experiment.

It was just as I thought. A legend is, after all, merely that...a legend.

After the news of Alexia's death, Birkin changed. Or I guess I should say, he returned back to his normal self.

But I guess the biggest thing was that all of his subordinates now had no choice but to think of him as the main researcher. Since, now, there was no one who could surpass his talents.

However, it also became taboo for anyone to talk about Alexia in front of him.

He fiercely opposed me when I planned on getting a sample of the T-Veronica Virus.

I had no choice but to put finding the truth about Alexia's research on the back burner.

In the end, even though the situation was at its best, Birkin himself failed to grow up and advance his research.

However, at that time I was concerned more about a different question at hand.

The Arklay research center was surrounded by a dense forest.

I often hiked through the forest, but since the center was located in a mountainous region there was never anyone to be found nearby.

The only method of transportation was by helicopter. And the center wasn't exactly the type of place that people came to visit.

One important reason for the fact that the center was located in such an isolated location was to prevent the virus from getting out in the instance of a "leak".

However, biological weapons aren't that simple. Viruses don't only infect humans. They can infect other things as well. Any virus is usually capable of infecting more than one host.

For example, the number of species that the ordinary "influenza virus" (the common flu) is recognized as infecting are birds, pigs, horses, seals, and humans. The difficult part is that not all types of animals/people within a species are affected. Even though, within the bird species, ducks and chickens are affected, all other birds are not.

And, if a virus mutates, then the kinds and number of hosts it affects changes.

So it is impossible to create a virus that is capable of affecting everything.

And that was the main problem--trying to adapt the T-Virus so that it would affect everything that it came into contact with.

During the time Birkin had become "useless", I had started investigating the T-Virus's infection rate.

It was then that I found out the T-Virus could infect almost any kind of living thing. Not just animals, but plants, insects, fish -- almost any species. The virus had the power to expand and disperse all over the earth.

Whenever I would leave the center for a walk in the woods I would always think to myself...

Why did Spencer choose this place?

Because there were lots of different types of species concentrated in the woods. If the virus ever did get out here, then what would happen to a place where there were this many types of living things present?

In the case of insects, they are small so you might not think of them as dangerous even if they are secondary carriers of the virus. However, insects usually exist in swarms, and that huge number makes them a very dangerous carrier, indeed.

If they were carriers then how far would the virus spread?

If a plant was a carrier, since they can't move, you wouldn't expect them to be able to infect many people. However, what about the pollen that comes from plants?

Considering those factors, the center was an extremely dangerous place to run "virus research".

And if you really think about it, the location of the Ashford's Antarctica Research Center was really a much safer and obvious choice.

It would almost seem as if this place was specifically chosen, as a location, for the purpose of "spreading" the virus. But, I just can't imagine that would really be so.

What is Spencer trying to get us to do?

This was a major issue. So big that I couldn't tell the other researchers.

At this time the only person that I felt I could have talked with about this was Birkin, but it was evident that telling him would be meaningless.

I needed more information.

It was at that time that I first began to feel the limitations of my position as researcher.

I needed to get myself a position that had more access to information that would reveal Spencer's true objective. I felt no love lost for throwing away my position as a researcher in order to find out.

But I couldn't rush things. Because if Spencer ever got wind to what I was doing then it would be all over.

I jumped back into my research and it was "business as usual" so as not to call attention to my plans.

During those times, the female test subject that continued to survive was left in some corner and forgotten.

A living could-have-been. We began to call her that sometime after she stopped yielding useful data for us.

At least, until 5 years later that is...

Nemesis Project

July 1st, 1988

The summer of our 11th year at Arklay was just starting.

I was already 28. Birkin had become a father and already had a 2 year-old daughter. His wife was one of the researchers that worked at Arklay.

You would normally think it hard to understand someone wanting to get married and raise a child, all the while doing their research.

But, it is said that only "non-ordinary" people ever continued to do research at Arklay. Only the crazy ones ever succeeded there.

And so, after 10 long years, our research finally reached the 3rd stage.

To create a living biological weapon that was a soldier that would follow strict orders, obey its program, and have intelligence.

It was the so-called "Tyrant", basically a monster that we set out to create.

However, there was a major obstruction to our research back then. Finding a suitable host body for "Tyrant".

The biggest problem was that suitable bodies for Tyrant were, at that time, genetically very limited.

The source of the problem lay in the nature of the T-Virus.

The T-Virus mutation used to create "zombies" and "hunters" could be used on just about any human but it would also cause a decline in the subject’s brain capacity.

If the subject didn't have a certain amount of intelligence, then it couldn't function as a Tyrant.

Birkin tried solving the problem by picking out new mutagens that would keep down the wear and tear on the subject’s brain so long as the subject fit the "Tyrant” profile.

However, the number of people that had suitable genetics to accept the tyrant cells were very limited. In a genetic analysis simulation it was found that only 1 in a million had the genetic make-up to become a "Tyrant." Any other person would merely become a regular zombie.

If we would have continued with our research then I'm sure we would have found a way to make a different type of T-virus that could change more people into "Tyrants".

However, in order to do that research, we first needed people that were perfectly suitable for the new mutation.

However, the odds of us being able to bring one of those few people, living in America, that fit the profile was extremely low.

In the end, the only thing they were able to do was to, by force, bring a few "close contenders" in from other labs.

Even before we had the chance to start our research, it seemed we had already hit an obstacle.

At that time I heard a rumor about another location in Europe where they had already reached the "third level" of producing a living biological weapon using a method that no one had thought of.

It was known as the "Nemesis Project".

In order to change the stagnant working pace and conditions, I took it upon myself to get a sample of one of the subjects from that project.

Of course Birkin first disagreed with me, but in the end I was able to get him to reconsider.

Everyone had no choice but to recognize the fact that, until we found a suitable "Tyrant" subject, our research wasn't going anywhere.

The package from Europe came at midnight, several days later, after a series of broadcasts, proposals, and counterproposals.

The box that contained "it" landed on the helicopter pad.

It read "Nemesis Prototype".

I had to use some very strong tactics to get the "thing" from where it was being researched in France, but all the while, Spencer was backing me up, pulling all of his strings and using his influence.

Only Birkin showed no interest in "it" until the end. But he, at least, recognized it as an important part of the experiment.

The sample was developed to create a never before seen, totally new life-form. By manipulating genes, they had artificially created a "living parasite".

That was what "Nemesis" really was.

It could latch onto another organism's brain and then take control of the host's brain bringing it a high-level of destructive power.

By combining intelligence with a destructive body suitable for battle, they were able to form the ultimate biological weapon.

And if they could complete the project then they would be capable of creating "warlike bodies" without having to worry about the intelligence issue.

However, the problem was that the parasite was not stable.

The only thing written within the document that was attached to the sample was "Failure--sample died" over and over again.

Anything that had been affected and whose intelligence was being controlled would die within 5 minutes.

We all understood that messing around with the prototype was very dangerous. If we could only somehow manage to extend the amount of time that the hosts would live then we could take control over the project. That was what I was aiming for.

Of course we would use "her" as our test subject. Surely her unusually high endurance would be perfect for sustaining the Nemesis prototype parasite for a long time. Even if she didn't last that long, it's not as if we would have lost anything special anyway.

However, the experiment yielded a result that was opposite from what I was predicting.

The Nemesis parasite that tried to enter her brain disappeared.

At first, I didn't even know what was going on. I couldn't believe that "she" would be the one to mix with the parasite genes without dying.

That was the beginning.

Somewhere within that "undying" body of hers, there had been a change...We had to re-examine her from head to toe one more time. During our 10 years of research she had already been totally and thoroughly examined but this time we ignored that previous data.

After the 21 years that she had been here, something was finally happening for the first time. After she had already survived longer than other subjects who had received the Nemesis virus, it was only Birkin that started to realize what was happening.

There was something within "her".

That “something” was a deviation from the T-Virus plan.

Something new that gave way to a new form.

Something that changed our destiny.

It was the beginning of the "G-Virus plan"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

T-Virus Outbreak

They wanted to create "BOW's" or rather "Bio-Weapons." For what though? A new army? Maybe a terrorist attack to take over a country of their interest? What was the true meaning for these experiments? Whatever the reason was, it is long gone, and there is no turning back.

Only George Trevor, the architect of the Spencer Mansion, and Ozwell E. Spencer, owner of the mansion and creator of Umbrella Inc., knew about the traps and hidden areas of the estate. With Trevor out of the picture, only Spencer would know.

Trevor realized that there were areas that would not built by him or his crew. Something wasn't right... As well as his families disappearance, Trevor knew something was up.

However the T-Virus got loose was irrelevant now. The teams working in the Spencer Estate lab where now all infected. All experiments were loose and roaming the Arklay Mountains.

Was the outbreak due to S.T.A.R.S. ranking officer Albert Wesker? Quite possibly. He was the one who indeed wanted to create the BIO-WEAPON of them all, Tyrant.

Experience the horror for yourself.

Secondary Infactant

Secondary infectants are creatures which were not directly targeted for mutation as a weapon but succumbed to the effects of a viral agent regardless. The main difference between a B.O.W. and a secondary infectant is that a B.O.W. is specifically engineered although it has been observed that random mutations in nature can be just as devastating although seldom useful as a weapon since they are uncontrollable.

The following secondary infectants are organized by their base organism's classification.

Locations

Raccoon City

Raccoon City was an urban community located in the American mid-west. At its peak, it had a population of over one hundred thousand. While existing as a town initially, it was thanks to the many donations by Umbrella that Raccoon prospered into a full fledged city in the late 20th century. Following the T-virus outbreak that afflicted the city in September 1998, the entire community was destroyed by an experimental nuclear weapon by the United States government, as part of Mission Code: XX (Bacillus Terminate).

History

Beginnings

Situated in the mid-west of the United States of America, Raccoon City started out as a small rural town community that through the many developments ushered in by Umbrella, soon flourished and prospered into a city. Prior to Umbrella's actual involvement, Raccoon was built upon the hard work of its citizens. In 1969, the Kite Brothers established the first underground railway system. While the system was initially very basic, it was fully supported by the citizens of Raccoon who used the railway regularly and made many contributions towards its success. Building upon this, they soon created their own company. Another early contributor was Michael Warren, an electrical engineer who moved to the town in 1961. During his time, Warren worked on the pre-existing cable car systems and was also in charge of maintaining the town's growing electrical requirements.

By 1968, Raccoon had developed into a city. From this point on, it would be known as Raccoon City.

A New Mayor

In 1988, Michael Warren was elected as the new mayor of Raccoon City. With his many personal contributions towards the city's development, Warren was a popular choice of the citizens. Unfortunately, it was believed that he was also under the influence of Umbrella, whose control over the city was increasing dramatically. As part of his administration, Warren accepted a number of monetary donations from Umbrella, and worked with them in modernizing the city and establishing a number of public services that would later prove vital to Raccoon City. This campaign was known as "A Bright 21st Century for Raccoon City" and was wholly supported by Umbrella themselves. Part of this extensive development project was the construction of a municipal building, as well as a new hospital in 1992. The Kite Brothers Railway was also renovated, now sporting 8 stations and stretching over 8.5 miles.

Thanks to Warren's support of Umbrella, the insidious company continued to shower the city with financial contributions and eventually gained total control over the entirety of Raccoon City. It is no doubt thanks to Warren that Umbrella's activities in the Arklay forest region were kept secret by his administration. In 1996, the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) established a branch in Raccoon City. By 1998, Raccoon City was considered "Home of Umbrella".

In April 1998, the city's water supply was reported to be contaminated. While it is unknown exactly where such contamination originated, it can be theorized that the P-12A Incinerator Facility (Dead Factory) was a primary contributor.

Outbreak

Due to the outburst of Queen Leech (under the guise of James Marcus) in May 1998, the T-virus was leaked throughout the Arklay Research Facility buried within the adjacent Arklay Forest. With this act, the virus slowly began to seep into the surrounding area, infecting countless forms of plant life and slowly making it's way towards Raccoon City itself. Guard dogs from the Arklay Research Facility also managed to break loose, and the ensuing months were littered with reports of mysterious, grisly murders caused by countless organisms from the facility. The explosion caused by the self-destruct mechanism within the Arklay Research Facility became public knowledge, but the exact details were covered up by Umbrella and the Raccoon Police Department.

On September 11th, large mutated insects were reported having attacked campers in the forest. Zombies soon began to roam the forest, and countless Cerberus began to prowl. Eventually, the mutilated corpse of a young woman was discovered. Soon enough, more reports began to surface, including the murder of a family of three in the western area of the Arklay Mountains, a 39 year old man in the Mendez River dock area and an elderly couple. Eyewitness reports of creatures matching the descriptions of Zombies and Cerberus were also on the rise. By July, over 30 murders had occurred.

Umbrella itself immediately took an interest in the reports, and with the Arklay Research Facility now completely decimated due to the outbreak, began the "X-Day" procedure. The destruction of the facility (or rather, the mansion) was covered in local news, but the exact details behind the incident were insidiously covered up by Umbrella.

More and more sightings of strange creatures surfaced in Raccoon City at an alarming rate and by late September, the T-virus that had been slowly leaking into the city from the outbreak caused by James Marcus had reached critical levels in Raccoon City. On top of this, the recent G-virus retrieval mission was met with failure, and William Birkin had transformed into a towering creature and smashed countless T-virus vials in the sewers. Subsequently, rats began to spread the virus throughout the city sewer system, and into the city itself. This brought the outbreak to critical levels, and soon enough, most of the city was infected.

Zombies littered the streets, leaving many citizens completely helpless. As the Raccoon Police Department staged countless attempts to quell the horror, they were all met with failure thanks to Chief Brian Irons meddling with the ammunition and weapon stockpile, causing a mismanagement which would prove deadly. However, zombies were not the only creatures the helpless citizens of Raccoon City had to contend with. The city was crawling with monstrosities like Cerberus, Lickers, Scissor Tails and more horrific mutations such as the Grave Digger. Mayor Michael Warren escaped just prior, and the National Guard quickly set up barricades around Raccoon City to prevent entry and escape. These barricades were finally completed around September 30th.

Raccoon City became Umbrella's personal playground, and was used as the first wide-scale test for the effectiveness of their bioweapons. On September 26th Umbrella had dispatched several units of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service into the city to gather ample combat data against the creatures infesting the city. Within these units, Umbrella included Supervisors (also known as Monitors) to take care of more secretive missions such as data retrieval and the destruction of incriminating evidence of Umbrella's involvement such as the Raccoon General Hospital. One such operative was Nicholai Ginovaef, who carried out the majority of these missions while also eliminating the other Supervisors along the way. These Supervisors were also used to collect the B.O.W. combat data, which Nicholai gathered large amounts of.

By September 31st, the United States Government issued the order for the commencement of Operation: Bacillus Terminate in an effort to stop further viral outbreak, as well as conceal their own involvement in the affair. A special committee within the Senate (of which Ron Davis was a member) decided upon this action, which was pushed through by the President. On dawn of October 1st, Raccoon City was wiped completely off the map by an experimental nuclear weapon, vaporizing the town and the surrounding forest.

Aspects

Being a corporate and industrialized town, over 1/3 of the Raccoon City population was employed in some form or another by Umbrella, who were largely responsible for the city's rapid growth and economic success.

The city celebrated the "Michael Festival" on September 29th each year, derived from Saint Michael in a Christian appreciation of the harvest season. The clock tower is named after Saint Michael.

Locations

Civilian buildings

City Hall

Raccoon City Hall was a municipal building housing the city's primary political figures. A statue of Mayor Michael Warren was erected following the refurbishment of the building thanks to funding from Umbrella in 1992.

The Apple Inn

The Apple Inn was hit hard during the outbreak thanks to previous issues with the boiler system. The inn was turned into a living hellfire, and became infested with Lickers. One unique Licker specimen encountered here was the Regis Licker. The Raccoon Fire Department managed to extinguish the fires in the inn. Ada Wong was scheduled to meet a contact there from The Organization during the outbreak in Raccoon City, though the contact was already dead by the time she arrived.

J's Bar

Located in the center of Raccoon City, J's Bar is well-known for having several popular brands of wine on hand. Raccoon City police officers often visited the bar during their down-time. Among them were Kevin Ryman and Barry Burton.

Kendo Gun Shop

Owned by Robert Kendo and located not far from the R.P.D., Kendo Gun Shop was the only gun store in Raccoon City and was often employed by the R.P.D. to produce custom firearms for the S.T.A.R.S. unit.

St. Michael's Clock Tower

Raccoon City Park

Raccoon City Dam

Douglas Prison

A prison located within Raccoon City, presumably on the outskirts. It suffered from outdated security and a poor infrastructure, which led to many escape attempts.

Raccoon Press

The head office for one of Raccoon City's main newspapers. During the outbreak, the entire building was left in flames. An R.F.D. crew which attempted to extinguish the flames were killed in the process.

Raccoon University

Umbrella facilities

Umbrella Chemical Plant

Located near the city limits, the Umbrella Chemical Plant was the main public presence of Umbrella within the city, contributing to a vast majority of the city's economy with many citizens being employed.

P-12A Incinerator Facility ("Dead Factory")

Colloquially known as the "Dead Factory", the P-12A Incinerator Facility was an Umbrella-owned waste disposal plant that had been tasked with the destruction of disused hazardous materials from the underground research facility beneath Raccoon City used by William Birkin. In May 1998, the facility came under the jurisdiction of a new manager, though eventually it was overrun with waste materials and suffered from staff negligence. By late July, the T-virus had leaked and contaminated the whole plant.

Umbrella Underground Research Facility

In 1991, Umbrella authorized and funded the construction of an extensive underground research facility where virologist William Birkin would carry out his research into the G-virus. A whole network of laboratories were housed in this facility, extending as far down as eight sub-basement levels. Birkin transferred to the facility in 1993. In September 1998, a failed assassination attempt on Birkin by members of the Umbrella Security Service resulted in a leak of the T-virus throughout the facility. The entrance was tucked away in the industrial block of the city.

Umbrella Raccoon City Headquarters

Located at the very heart of Raccoon City, Umbrella maintained a central headquarters from which to manage their operations through the city that they controlled. These clandestine laboratories were responsible for the creation of a number of biological weapons such as the Tyrant (T-0400TP). It was also equipped with numerous cutting edge security systems, as well as a B.O.W. training area.

Umbrella Sales Office

A small civilian sales office that sold a number of Umbrella products, namely pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. On September 28th 1998, Jill Valentine took refuge here while searching for the necessary components to power a cable car.

Raccoon City Hospital

The Raccoon City Hospital was built thanks to funds and grants provided by Umbrella in 1992. Umbrella had close ties to the hospital, having deliberately connected it to the Underground Research Facility through the sewer system beneath the hospital. Many of the staff were also connected to Umbrella. As well as this, the lower levels of the hospital contained a T-virus research facility, with one room in particular containing MA-124 Hunter Gammas in stasis. The hospital staff worked diligently on a vaccine for the T-virus following the outbreak, but while the vaccine was completed, the entire staff had already succumbed to the virus. The hospital was destroyed on the night of September 31st by Nicholai Ginovaef in order to conceal any sensitive material.

Raccoon Police Department

History

The Raccoon Police Department was formerly an art museum before being renovated and used as the central station for the city's police force. Made up of the nation's finest officers and ample funding from Umbrella, the R.P.D. was a showcase of a police station, equipped with far more technology than would normally be appropriate for a small city. The Chief of Police was Brian Irons, who had been chief since the department's inception and most likely contributed heavily to the use of a former art museum due to his tastes. Despite this, the station was still filled with Irons own personal art collection, making it easy to mistake it for a museum.

The R.P.D. was secretly in the firm grasp of Umbrella due to the bribes awarded to Brian Irons for his silence on Umbrella's secrets within the city.

In 1996, the Raccoon City branch of S.T.A.R.S. was established thanks to the ample funding provided by Umbrella. Due to the incident at the Arklay Research Facility, S.T.A.R.S. was quickly disbanded in the summer of 1998. Following this and the need for a special police force to tackle the increasing amount of crime in the city, the R.P.D. quickly established the Select Police Force. This force was comprised of the best the R.P.D. had to offer, and the department arranged for more recruits to be employed from across the country, one of which was Leon S. Kennedy. The SPF became the R.P.D.'s equivalent of SWAT.

Downfall

The entire Raccoon Police Department was wiped out in late September 1998, with a last stand by the Select Police Force failing on September 26th. Due to the intentional mismanagement of the ammunition and weapons cache by Irons, the entire police force was left at a severe disadvantage against the oncoming zombie hordes. Survivors remained in the precinct, but were slowly killed one by one by the attacking zombie hordes and Licker specimens, as well as their own police chief who had since gone mad and begun hunting down his own officers. A large fire also broke out in the backyard of the department preventing escape. Finally, a plan was formulated to escape through the city sewers, but the survivors were soon cut down, leaving only five officers alive in the precinct.

Armaments

The R.P.D.'s standard issue handgun was the Beretta M92F, which replaced the Browning HP as the standard weapon for all police officers. Instead, the Browning HP was relegated as a backup weapon, being kept in the glove compartments of squad cars and stashed in the department's weapons and ammunition cache. Other weapons were kept in abundance, such as the Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun and Benelli M3 Super 90 Shorty and Franchi SPAS-12 shotguns. The SPAS-12 was used as the support weapon for police officers, commonly found in the trunks of squad cars.

The R.P.D. squad car was the Ford Crown Victoria P71 Interceptor, which itself is used by police forces such as the New York Police Department.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rockfort Island

Rockfort Island was one of Umbrella's first and main offshore facilities. The island doubled as multiple complexes. A prison section on the island was used to transport prisoners of Umbrella from overseas for multiple offences against the company. A set of labs was used for viral agent and B.O.W. experimentation, and the island houses the Military Training Facility, the very facility were all Umbrella Security Service (Umbrella Special Forces) members such as HUNK were trained. The island also had it's own set of B.O.W. programs running, and was responsible for such products as the Albinoid and Bandersnatch, and was responsible for a new experimental mutation of the T-virus. Most important of all, the island was run by the Ashford family and doubled as their living space. Both Alfred and Alexia Ashford lived in a mansion on top of one of the island's mountains, fronted by another grandiose mansion in between it and connected by a bridge. Alfred himself became the official commander of the island following Alexia's cryogenic stasis, once he became the Ashford family Master.

Claire Redfield was transported to the island's prison in late December and in a twist of fate, the island was subsequently attacked by the Hive/Host Capture Force. This attack caused a leak of the experimental T-virus variant, and doomed the island to it's destruction. The facility's self-destruct sequence was set off by Alfred Ashford following a battle with Claire and a former prisoner, Steve Burnside. The resulting set of explosions damaged a large majority of the island's facilities, but did not destroy the island outright.

Military Training Facility

Completed on December 1993, the training facility on Rockfort Island was a personal endeavor by Alfred Ashford and was built alongside the island's prison complex. It's purpose was to train members of Umbrella's special forces such as the Umbrella Security Service and Anti B.O.W. squad members.

United States Government

The federal government of the United States is the central current reigning United States governmental body, established by the United States Constitution. The United States Government's involvement with Umbrella stems from Umbrella's bio-weapons, which the US was interested in purchasing for use in warfare, and soon became one of Umbrella's top customers. Umbrella used this to gain an edge by implanting agents in the US Government itself, which allowed Umbrella's influence to spread into the Senate. This influence was used to particular extent during the Raccoon City Incident, where the decision to initiate operation Baccillus Terminate (Mission Code: XX) was stalled until dawn on October 1st 1998 when the decision was passed by a special committee, of which Senator Ron Davis was a member. An experimental nuclear weapon was then launched at Raccoon City in an effort to sterilize the outbreak and prevent it from spreading. This was merely the feigned motive for the launch however, with the true reason being to hide and destroy the government's involvement.

Following the travesty, the US Government and Umbrella both suffered from the incident. The government was heavily scrutinized, and the acting president quickly announced his resignation following the incident. Umbrella was bombarded with lawsuits, including a primary one initiated by the US Government which was handled within the Supreme Court. Umbrella's deep pockets were able to buy the very best lawyers money could buy however, and this prolonged the court case for another 5 years with part of the blame for the incident being placed on the government. The result was an on-going struggle between the US Government and Umbrella. The new administration established the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team within USSTRATCOM and tasked the unit with hunting down and eliminating rogue elements of Umbrella. One such task was the Spencer Rain incident, which contributed heavily to Umbrella's downfall with the murder of top Umbrella employees and the destruction of the Spencer Rain itself. Following this, AUPIT was dissolved and 5 months later, Umbrella lost the court case due to incriminating evidence provided by Albert Wesker following his raid of the Umbrella Russian Chemical Plant.

With Umbrella dissolved, the current administration continued to hide the government's involvement in the Raccoon City affair, leading to anger specifically from Curtis Miller, triggering the Harvardville outbreak.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sheena Island

Sheena Island was a small European island that Umbrella had managed to outright buy due to the company's abundant funds and extensive influence. Due to this, Sheena was essentially the model city of Umbrella, with almost every man and woman being an employee of Umbrella in some shape or form. The island itself was of dire importance to Umbrella, as the mass-production program for the Tyrant (T-103) model was initiated here at an aptly named Tyrant Plant at the top of the island's mountains. The method for mass-production was also presumably discovered here, the use of a chemical known as Beta Hetero Nonserotonin.

The entire island was run under the command of Vincent Goldman, a ruthless and cold employee of Umbrella who had garnered nothing but disdain from the civilians on the island. At one point, Goldman hunted down and murdered a series of escaped "guinea pigs" and attempted to cover up the truth of the incident as a mass suicide. However, a group of detractors learned of the true nature of the incident and subsequently began to conduct an investigation into Goldman, gathering evidence against him to be presented to the routine Umbrella management inspection team set to arrive very shortly. In late October 1998 in an act of sheer insanity, Goldman unleashed the T-virus upon his own island, effectively creating a second Raccoon City disaster.

Thanks to the efforts of Ark Thompson, the Tyrant Plant was destroyed following the detonation of it's self-destruct sequence.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spencer Rain

Named after one of the founders of Umbrella, Ozwell E. Spencer, the Spencer Rain was a vast and top of the range cruise liner that to the outside world was nothing more than a standard ship. Operated by Umbrella Europe, the Spencer Rain was forced into more of a commercial setting after the Raccoon City disaster. Public and governmental scrutiny of the corporation meant that any bio-weapon research and subsequent weapon sales had to be done in top secret and preferably away from the mainland. The on-going court case against the pharmaceutical giant certainly did not help matters in the development of Umbrella's next line of bio-weapons.

The nature of the Spencer Rain and its affiliation were kept secret from even the ship's staff in order to maintain absolute secrecy as to the secret dealings conducted aboard the ship.

The laboratories at the Paris facility had begun to finalize and stabilize the T+G-virus. A new and powerful virus that was supposed to revolutionize and restore the fortunes of the company. The Spencer Rain was chosen as the ideal venue to showcase and demonstrate the potential the virus had, as well as showing off recent B.O.W.'s in the form of the Hunter Elite and Tyrant (T-091).

Top Umbrella executives saw this breakthrough with the T+G-virus as a major turning point and duly attended the auction on board the Spencer Rain unaware of the present danger. Celebrities and representatives from countries and corporation's were also invited to the prestigious auction, all of which with the intent to purchase the latest and greatest from Umbrella.

Unfortunately for the officials and purchasers, ex-Umbrella employee, Morpheus D. Duvall chose the day of the auction to enact his revenge against the company that had fired him four years ago. After stealing T-virus samples from the Paris laboratories, Morpheus released the virus onto the ship infecting everybody on board. In mere hours, most high level Umbrella employees were now the rotting undead, victims of their own creation.

Bruce McGivern, USSTRATCOM agent and operative of the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team successfully infiltrated the floating ghost ship. He soon encountered Morpheus D. Duvall almost immediately, with a gun pointed at his head. Thankfully, Chinese agent, Fongling who was also sent to stop Morpheus threw a grenade on the top deck of the cruise liner causing significant damage and enabling Bruce to flee from Morpheus (now gravely injured) and enter the ship itself.

Morpheus, now in a near critical state injected himself with the T+G-virus causing him to transform into a Tyrant. In a last ditch effort, Morpheus navigated the ship back to his former place of work, Benthic Island. The Spencer Rain, with its work done, was left by Morpheus and the once flagship cruise liner ploughed into the east coast of the rocky island causing it to crash and explode.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Benthic Island

Benthic Island is an unofficial name given to the offshore facility owned and operated by Umbrella where its Waste Disposal Facility was built. The island itself is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, and was used primarily to dispose of failed B.O.W. experiments sent from other facilities.

Placed in charge of this facility was Morpheus D. Duvall, an eccentric character who has whimsical dreams of absolute beauty which often overrides his ability to manage the location. As a supervisor of the Waste Disposal Facility, Morpheus was in charge of the complete eradication of the B.O.W. However, with competition from other laboratories rife, many of the failed experiments that were supposed to have been disposed of were released into specialist areas of the facility, usually in the underground sections. Here they were allowed to roam free to a degree and their adaptation into this new environment was constantly monitored by researchers.

However due to Morpheus' sloppy management many employees were infected by the T-virus although a widespread outbreak at the facility was not recorded until 2002.

Located deep below the facility are the Benthic Laboratories, a small, well equipped Umbrella lab where all the observations were recorded and where progress was made. Secretly however, in 1998 Morpheus had began to enact his plan of establishing a kingdom of absolute beauty by building a missile silo next to the laboratories. Commissioning the Umbrella architect in secret, work began on the silo's and took until autumn 2002 when it was finally completed. Morpheus intended to use the missiles and load them with the T-virus and threaten the world for exorbitant sums of money.

September 2002 and Morpheus' plan had been put into action with USSTRATCOM agent, Bruce McGivern and Chinese Agent Fongling working together to stop him. The Umbrella owned luxury cruise liner the Spencer Rain crashed into the east coast of the island causing the ship to blow up. Bruce and Fong Ling escaped unharmed and explored the islands waste disposal centre. After uncovering the missile silo's underground, Bruce manages to defeat the mutated Morpheus who swells to gargantuan proportions. His mass prevents the loaded missiles from firing into the atmosphere, and takes the full brunt of the launch, destroying his huge body mass and taking Benthic Island with him. Bruce and Fong Ling escape the island using a submersible vessel.

S.T.A.R.S.

History

The first S.T.A.R.S. unit was established in the summer of 1967 in New York City to investigate a series of occult-related homicides. Since then, S.T.A.R.S. units have been established in a number of major metropolitan areas.

The branch involved in the Raccoon City incident was formed in 1996 by Albert Wesker and Barry Burton thanks to a number of donations by Umbrella and other private organizations as part of mayor Michael Warren's "A Bright 21st Century For Raccoon City" campaign. The unit was dissolved in July 1998 following an investigation in the Arklay Forest, which led to the near complete decimation of the entire squad. Since then, Umbrella placed a bounty on each of the surviving members of the team due to their knowledge of Umbrella's secret bio-organic weapons research. Umbrella employed various methods to wipe out the surviving members, from ordering Chief of Police Brian Irons to have them killed in an "accidental" manner, to deploying the Nemesis T-Type to Raccoon City during the T-virus outbreak in September 1998.

Members

Members of the organization are normally recruited from law enforcement or military agencies such as S.W.A.T. and the USAF. Some members such as the 18 year old Rebecca Chambers are recruited specifically for their abilities in certain fields, making S.T.A.R.S. a more open yet even more selective organization requiring very specific skills and qualities. On top of this, all S.T.A.R.S. members undergo extensive training in various fields to add to their already expansive knowledge and experience.

All S.T.A.R.S. units are divided into two teams, Alpha Team and Bravo Team, and each squad member is assigned to a position such as BUM (Backup Man) or OM (Omni-Man).

Equipment

Due to the funding provided by private companies, the S.T.A.R.S. teams (in particular the Raccoon City branch) were able to acquire the latest and most advanced weapons and equipment possible at the time. The extra-generous donations from Umbrella, expertise of Barry Burton and help of the local Kendo Gun Shop managed by Robert Kendo and Joe Kendo aided in this, providing expert customization. The greatest example of this is the Samurai Edge, which became the unit's primary sidearm.

Anti-Umbrella Pursuite And Investigation Team

History

Initiated as a subsidiary of the United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team was the U.S Government's main attempt at completely eradicating Umbrella. While Umbrella's trial before the Supreme Court was in process, a direct take down of the organization would have been impossible. Instead, the AUPIT was established in order to hunt down and suppress any instances of bio-terror instigated by Umbrella and it's employees.

In 2002, the AUPIT proved invaluable in the eventual downfall of Umbrella. Through the efforts of agent Bruce McGivern, rogue former Umbrella scientist Morpheus D. Duvall was disarmed and eliminated before he could infect a mass population of the US and China. Along with Morpheus downfall came the destruction of another Umbrella facility in the Atlantic Ocean and the Spencer Rain cruiser, which was destroyed by Morpheus himself. This killed off a large percentage of Umbrella, along with many of their supporters and benefactors.

Another prominent member of the organization was Leon S. Kennedy, who worked with the organization following the Raccoon City incident until its dissolution in 2002.

In late 2002 AUPIT was officially dissolved following the fallout from the Spencer Rain incident. It is also possible that internal reshuffles within the Department of Defense and budgetary changes within USSTRATCOM played some role in this.

A Secret Orgainization (Ada Wong's)

History

Raccoon City

As the mansion incident drew to a close, The Organization faded into the background once more before finally re-emerging in September 1998, with the Raccoon City outbreak. Not wasting any opportunities, operatives of The Organization were quickly put to work. Albert Wesker and Ada Wong were two such operatives, with Wesker commanding Ada from behind-the-scenes in an effort to retrieve the G-virus. Combat data from the countless B.O.W.'s in Raccoon City was recorded, including that of the Nemesis T-Type sent to eliminate the surviving S.T.A.R.S. members. While Ada Wong initially failed her mission, she was successful in retrieving a G-virus tissue sample from the corpse of William Birkin, who had since become a G-Type creature. With the aid of Wesker, Ada managed to escape from the town shortly before it's imminent destruction. The Raccoon City disaster, while a huge blow to Umbrella, was a great success for The Organization.

Rockfort Island

Following the catastrophe, The Organization learned of the T-Veronica virus and Rockfort Island. With this information, the Organization assigned Wesker to head the retrieval mission, Wesker then commandeered the Hive/Host Capture Force and was dispatched. Commanded by Albert Wesker who had his own ulterior motives for the T-Veronica virus, the unit led a full-scale assault on Rockfort Island, eliminating the security forces and spreading the T-virus. While a carrier of T-Veronica was encountered, its creator Alexia Ashford was actually in the Umbrella Antarctic Base. Albert Wesker and his men immediately left Rockfort and soon arrived at the facility. However, after an unsuccessful attempt to capture Alexia, their plans were once again foiled by surviving S.T.A.R.S. member Chris Redfield, who had destroyed Alexia's mutated form. Despite this, Alexia's refined strain of the T-Veronica virus was extracted from the corpse of Steve Burnside, deeming the mission a resounding success for the Organization.

However, the Organization began to suspect Albert Wesker and his apparent motives. As such, The Organization commissioned Ada Wong to spy on Wesker, who himself had come into contact with yet another rival corporation of Umbrella, Tricell.

Umbrella's End

In February 2003, spies of the Organization in a village close to Umbrella's last remaining facility in the Caucasus region of Russia managed to notify the company of the existence of a secret Umbrella "hangar" located at the site to store B.O.W.s. However, Albert Wesker alone decided that with Umbrella on it's last leg, now would be the perfect time to strike it. Without the authorization of the Organization, Wesker launched a one-man raid on the Umbrella Caucasus Research Facility, eliminating Sergei Vladimir and stealing all of Umbrella's data and company assets stored on the U.M.F.-013. The Organization however, saw none of this.

Las Plagas

Sometime in 2004, the Organization managed to intercept an e-mail from Los Illuminados researcher Luis Sera to a now deceased friend, begging to be taken into custody. Through this, the existence and potential of the ancient parasitic organism Las Plagas was discovered. Once again, The Organization commissioned Albert Wesker to command Ada Wong into retrieving samples of the parasite. However, The Organization had no intention of allowing Wesker to receive the samples and as such, Ada was ordered instead to hand them straight to The Organization. The samples included a control Plaga specimen, as well as eight subordinate Plagas. With this, The Organization had successfully stalled Wesker's plans for now.

TerraSave

TerraSave is a human rights organization that focused on protesting against the non-ethical usage of biological agents, specifically the T-virus. Its most prominent member is Claire Redfield, a Raccoon City Incident survivor. Curtis Miller was a former member of the group.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WilPharma

WilPharma was a small-scale pharmaceutical enterprise. Following the Raccoon City incident, the public's faith in biological engineering firms descended rapidly. With the truth about the T-virus made public, WilPharma managed to acquire samples - presumably from the U.S. government - in an attempt to develop a vaccine. However, part of their research involved the experimentation of the virus on human test subjects in India. When this was revealed, WilPharma faced a flurry of protests against their research which even began to have an impact on their share value. The strongest of these protests came from TerraSave, a human rights activist group, who were themselves responsible for the accumulation of photographic evidence implying WilPharma's illegal activities in India.

With their stocks falling, WilPharma desperately attempted to rekindle the public's faith in them. Senator Ron Davis even supported WilPharma, partly because of the fact that he himself was a primary stockholder of the company.

Following the outbreak incidents in Harvardville, WilPharma entered into bankruptcy, and was subsequently bought out by Tricell, another pharmaceutical company.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tricell

History

Comprised of shipping, natural resources and pharmaceutical divisions and founded by the Travis family during the Age of Exploration as Travis Trading, Tricell was a major pharmaceutical company that maintained facilities throughout the world, finding it's humble beginnings as a shipping company. Thomas Travis, a European merchant, founded the company, and later went on to have seven children. One of these children, Henry Travis, was indirectly responsible for the discovery of the Progenitor virus a full 100 years or so before its uncovering. With Henry's impressive 72 volume book set entitled "Survey of Natural History", the scientific community largely wrote off his books, which were written from his five expeditions to Africa. With Henry's death only two years after his final expedition, his older brother spread the rumor that the set was nothing but fiction. In reality, he wanted to ensure that Travis Trading would be the only ones privy to the large amount of information within the books.

Travis Trading, with Henry's books, used the information within to great extent and gained a firm foothold on Africa and exploited the abundant mineral resources contained within. Mining, oil and natural gas fields were among these endeavors, establishing the foundation for the natural resources department of Tricell. During the mid-20th century, they had also begun to collect specimens of plants, animals and insects, also using the information within Henry's books. These specimens were applied for pharmaceutical research, bringing commercial success and laying the foundation for the pharmaceutical division of Tricell.

During the 1960's, the three divisions of Travis Trading formed the conglomerate; Tricell. Each division of Tricell (shipping, natural resources and development, and pharmaceuticals) runs on its own capital, essentially making them separate entities under a single parent company. Other divisions also exist between Tricell's branch offices.

Involvement in Bioweapons

Soon enough, a secret bioweapons division was established, inspired by another pharmaceutical company, Umbrella, its biggest rival. Following Umbrella's downfall, Tricell's sway in this area increased. Thanks to Albert Wesker, Tricell was able to greatly expand its sway in this area after being provided with all of Wesker's spoils over the years. Among these were the G-virus, T-Veronica virus and

In 2005, Tricell acquired the assets of WilPharma, another pharmaceutical firm that had entered bankruptcy following an outbreak of the T-virus in Harvardville. The biggest gain from this acquisition was the T-virus vaccine WilPharma had developed.

Excella Gionne was made CEO of the African division of Tricell in 1999, and personally collaborated with Albert Wesker on the Uroboros Project. Wesker used Tricell for a number of years as an asset while still working for The Organization before leaving his former employer in 2004.

Tricell was also a prominent member of the Global Pharmaceutical Consortium, was a contributor to the funding of the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance, which would later be used to gather field and combat data on Tricell's B.O.W.s.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B.S.A.A

The Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance is a global task force set up to investigate and prevent bio-terrorism following the fall of the Umbrella corporation. The organization holds eight branches worldwide and is under the jurisdiction of the United Nations. Prominent members include Chris Redfield of the North American branch and Sheva Alomar of the West Africa branch.

Following the downfall of Umbrella, the Global Pharmaceutical Consortium was hit hard by the controversy and countless lawsuits that arose from the Raccoon City incident, due to Umbrella being an executive board member within the Consortium. This caused the public's trust in the consortium to waver, which only deepened when evidence presented by prosecutors during the Supreme Court trial against Umbrella showed that other members of the organization were aiding Umbrella indirectly. Umbrella had used medicines and techniques acquired from other members of the consortium and implemented them into their biological weapons research. With the prospect of bankruptcy now thrust into the consortium's hands, the organization struck a deal with the prosecution to turn over any evidence that would support the prosecutions case against Umbrella. With Umbrella's downfall in 2003, the consortium had come out relatively unscathed and began to regain the public's trust.

While Umbrella's downfall marked the end of the consortium's involvement in the whole affair, incidents of bio-terrorism were on the rise. To combat this and to avoid another situation like the one following Raccoon City, the organization established the BSAA Only eleven individuals were originally inducted into the BSAA, two of whom being Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, and these elite members were referred to as the "Original Eleven". While their authority was highly limited due to the BSAA initially being a civilian-led organization, leading most it's members to act as observers and instructors to various other military and police units, the bio-terror problem continued to escalate. They could not operate freely in sovereign nations, and thus were unable to conduct investigations, make pertinent arrests, or even use force when the situation dictated it.

With immediate action required, the BSAA was reformed by the United Nations as a UN-controlled special forces team. Ensuring it's acceptance by the member states. However, only 70% of the member states allowed the BSAA to operate on their soil, while the remainder only allowed it to do so on a conditional basis. The current incarnation of the BSAA was established with these in mind, and BSAA units were kept at numerous locations throughout the globe such as air force bases. The BSAA HQ was located in England at an undisclosed location, but presumably close to a Royal Air Force station.

The branches established worldwide include North America, West Africa, East Africa, Oceania, Middle East, South America, Europe (where it's headquarters is based) and Far East. Their jurisdictions are listed below:

European Headquarters: Europe and western Russia

Middle East Branch: The Middle East and part of Africa

North American Branch: The entire North American continent (Chris Redfield is stationed here)

South American Branch: The entire South American continent

West African Branch: The western part of the African continent (Sheva Alomar is stationed here)

East African Branch: The eastern part of the African continent

Far East Branch: Eastern Russia and the countries east of India

Oceanian Branch: Australia is the center of operations for Oceania
(Antarctica, where the Umbrella Antarctic Base was located, falls under the jurisdiction of the Oceania Branch.)

With the organization now firmly established, members were culled from the best the world at large had to offer. Such examples include Reynard Fisher, Dan Dechant and Josh Stone. Support staff were also primarily from government organizations in numerous countries. These support staff provided technical, medical, physical and mental support to field agents.

BSAA deployment teams were maintained in two separate groups, the first being the Special Operations Unit (SOU), which were sanctioned to infiltrate areas, engage in direct combat and subdue any offenders. The SOU teams are normally comprised of 12 members, divided three four-man cells. The SOU's special feature lay in the flexibility of it's personnel depending on the operation. Members from different units and cells are brought in to assist operations too big or difficult for a single SOU team to handle. Dan Dechant is a prominent member of the SOU.

The second group are the Special Operations Agents (SOA) that primarily work alone in investigation and espionage missions, or when a full team cannot penetrate a certain area. Under these conditions, a two-man cell may be used. Members of the SOA are typically higher ranked and more skilled in terms of technical prowess and abilities than SOU members, but only in terms of physiological state and situation handling aptitude.

The BSAA is primarily funded by the Global Pharmaceuticals Consortium, with a prominent funder being Tricell. The consortium's involvement also acts as a world-wide PR service, benefiting both the consortium and the BSAA in the long run. The BSAA remains a public organization with international staff.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Global Pharmaceutical Consortium

The Global Pharmaceutical Consortium of which Umbrella and Tricell were prominent members was comprised of the world's leading pharmaceutical corporations. It's exact details are unknown, but it is most prominent for being dragged into the aftermath of the Raccoon City incident, due to Umbrella's usage of medical methods devised by other members of the consortium. In order to regain public trust and avoid suffering the same fate as Umbrella itself, the consortium supplied evidence for the prosecution in Umbrella's case within the Supreme Court.

Following the court case, the consortium established the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance to combat the growing threat of bio-terrorism.

Operation Pueblo

Los Illuminatos

The Los Illuminados were a dark cult based in a rural area of Spain that worshipped the ancient Las Plagas parasitic organism, and sought to use the parasite for their own ends. Their plans were soon extinguished by the first castellan of the prominent and noble Salazar family, who prosecuted the members of the cult and had the Las Plagas sealed away in the very depths of the Salazar Family Castle, as fossils. On top of this, the Salazar family somehow possessed the ability to control the Las Plagas themselves, and this was a necessary component of the overall goal of the Los Illuminados, who wanted to use the parasite in a bid to spread their religion throughout the world and control every being infected with the parasite as a sort of collective hive mind on a global scale.

Despite the sealing of Las Plagas, the Los Illuminados would continue it's plans in the year 2004 under the command of Osmund Saddler. The plan set off when Saddler somehow managed to convince Ramon Salazar, the eighth castellan, that his ancestors had committed a dreadful sin in prosecuting the cult and sealing Las Plagas. With Salazar's backing, Saddler traveled to a nearby village and with the help of the village chief, Bitores Mendez, began long and public religious readings directed at the villagers. A large amount were recruited to excavate the fossilized remains of the Las Plagas. However, the parasite existed in the form of spores at this time, and infected the villagers as soon as they were inhaled. Now with some of the villagers under his control, Saddler then infected the rest of the village with the rest of the excavated Las Plagas via direct injection of Plagas eggs.

Saddler's slightly altered version of the Illuminados overall goal involved the capture of the United States President's daughter, Ashley Graham, and infecting her with the parasite. Once infected, she would be sent back to the US (after some "donations") and the parasite would hatch, and proceed to infect the entire US administration, effectively bringing the entire world to Saddler's fingertips. However due to the actions of Leon S. Kennedy, these plans were destroyed and Saddler was killed.

The current status of the cult is unknown, or whether they even exist at all anymore due to the deaths of Osmund Saddler, Ramon Salazar and Bitores Mendez.

Las Plagas Virus

History

The Las Plagas were an ancient parasitic organism, over thousands of years old, that were located in a rural area in Spain, specifically underneath a castle owned by the Salazar family. They were the subject of worship of the Los Illuminados cult, who were persecuted by the first castellan of the Salazar castle who then sealed the fossilized remains of the parasites underground. They were later unearthed by Osmund Saddler, who sought to use them for world dominance. They possess the ability to lie in a dormant phase in the form of spores, and it was through this that they were able to initially infect the population of the workers hired by Saddler. Since their uncovering, they have been the subject of much interest on the black market.

Initially, the Las Plagas were able to be controlled directly by the Salazar family which sealed them away and persecuted the Los Illuminados many generations ago. How this was possible is currently unknown.

There are two initial strains of Las Plagas, the normal, "Subordinate" Plaga and a "Control" Plaga. An artificial variant called the Master Plaga (also known more accurately as the "Alpha Plaga") was developed by the Los Illuminados. While the average Plagas will exhibit control over the host, the Control Plaga does the opposite and gives the host unprecedented control over the parasite, also controlling other Subordinate Plagas in the process. This Control Plaga also induces drastic physical mutations upon the host, as exhibited by Ramon Salazar and Bitores Mendez. The effects are also irreversible, and once the host undergoes a mutation, it cannot hope to live a normal human life again.

Las Plagas are unique in that a matured parasite within a host does not have a single defined form, and can take on many different appearances and mutations. The Los Illuminados conducted experiments on these many variations, producing countless monstrosities such as the U-3, El Gigante, Regenerator and Novistator on once human test subjects. This trait would be more greatly expressed after the development of the Type 2, 3 and 4 Plagas.

Variants

Subordinate Plaga

The normal Plaga is the most generic, and was excavated en masse by the local villagers under the command of Ramon Salazar and Osmund Saddler. Several natural variants of this Plaga exist which can only be detected after administration to a host. Some subjects, such as Dr. Salvador and J.J. gain enhanced strength and much greater vitality. Among Subordinate Plaga, there are even more variants. Some of these are natural while others were developed by the researchers hired by Osmund Saddler.

Control Plaga

Several different specimens of Plaga were uncovered during the excavation beneath the Salazar castle. These Plaga had the ability to control several Subordinate Plaga within a given area, and had much more drastic mutations in comparison to the ones brought on by Subordinate Plaga.

Master Plaga

The Master (or "Alpha") Plaga was developed artificially by Osmund Saddler's researchers. It is hypothesized that this variant was developed through the manipulation of the Control Plaga, as the Master Plaga retains the ability to control Subordinate Plaga but does so on a much wider scale -- every single Plaga infected organism. It was to be used in an attempt to control the United States government, and perhaps eventually the entire globe. Due to these abilities, it became the subject of much interest from both Albert Wesker and The Organization. The first sample resided in Osmund Saddler's body, whilst the second sample was retrieved by Ada Wong and is in the hands of The Organization.

Type 2 Plagas

Following the successful acquisition of the Las Plagas parasite by Albert Wesker through means unknown (presumably through the black market), Tricell got their hands on samples and successfully managed to enhance the parasite. One major problem with the initial Las Plagas was the time it took to take control of the host, having to be injected in egg form and then mature over the course of days. Type 2 remedied this issue by being orally transmitted instead of injected, being forced down the mouth of a host. Within seconds, the parasite rends the host's esophagus and attacks the medulla oblongata before moving onto the brain and finally the spinal cord, where it takes control of the host's central nervous system. With this dramatic reduction in infection time, Type 2 also retained all of the normal Plagas characteristics, making it well suited to B.O.W. application. Test data was gathered against B.S.A.A. operatives in the Kijuju Autonomous Zone.

One major weakness that was overcome with the Type 2 and later variations was the extreme weakness to sunlight, restricting Plagas from revealing themselves in daylight. This issue was remedied by Tricell, but they remain weak to intense light such as that exhibited by flash grenades.

The upgraded Plagas are also highly adaptable, and have several different mutations. Examples include the Cephalo, which resembles a more grotesque version of the original Plaga and the Kipepeo, a unique mutation with the ability to fly. One drastic difference between Type 2 and the standard Plagas is that the host is generally rendered even more violent and barbaric.

Type 3 Plagas

In an effort to physically enhance hosts infected with the Las Plagas further, Tricell experimented with the control Plagas and made a breakthrough by using a gene found in a control Plaga and infusing it with the normal, subordinate Las Plagas. The result was the Type 3 Plagas, which exhibits numerous physical improvements such as increased jumping ability. Tricell used the area surrounding it's African oil field as the official testing area for the Type 3 variant, using the native tribe, the Ndipaya, as test subjects. Under the guise of an inoculation, the Type 3 Plagas were administered in egg form similar to the standard Las Plagas in Spain. Soon, the entire tribe was under the effects of the Type 3. The major drawback with this variation is that it kills both women and children. There are also far more physical changes to the host after maturation, with the skin being visibly torn and the eyes a deranged, diluted yellow rather than the typical red exhibited by Type 2 Plagas. Type 3 will also generally deliver it's hosts into a killing frenzy, exhibited by the tribesmen who donned the clothing styles of their ancestors and took up tools such as spears and shields and even began killing each other.

Due to the nature of the control Plaga gene, Type 3 also presented various new mutations in some hosts, and dramatically increased the height of some subjects to almost three meters, the Type 3 equivalent of the variation normally resulting in the chainsaw wielding Ganado and Majini.

While an overall improvement, Type 3's 0% adherence rate to women and young children presented a problem. As well as this, the loss of the host's intelligence and reasoning rendered the subjects unable to be controlled.

A new mutation exhibited by Type 3 was named Duvailia.

Type 4 Plagas

While the Type 3 Plagas greatly improved the physical strength of the host, the host's intelligence greatly deteriorated, reverting to primal instincts making any Plagas infected subjects unsuitable for use as super soldiers. Along with this, the effectiveness of Type 3 waned somewhat when the hosts went into a killing frenzy, even murdering each other. In order to remedy this, the Type 4 variant was produced. While retaining most of Type 3's physical improvements, Type 4 improves intelligence to a reasonable level, going so far as to allow the host to use weapons more effectively while being able to refrain from going on a killing frenzy. It was administered to the "security forces" working for Tricell. There are a few clear physical differences with this Plagas variant in comparison to Type 3. One of which is the eyes of the host, which are completely clear save for the now diminutive pupils along with a gray skin tone and large, bulging veins and arteries surrounding their bodies.

Las Plagas Infectants

Las Plagas infectants are organisms directly contaminated by the Las Plagas parasite. The effects of the parasite vary widely between organisms and even within the same species for unknown reasons.

All Las Plagas infectants are listed below in alphabetical order by their colloquial designation.

umbrella - perlude to the fall

In early 2003, former S.T.A.R.S. Officers Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield joined up with an elite regional biohazard containment unit which had been formed shortly after the Raccoon City incident in order to contain any future outbreaks caused by the Umbrella Corporation's bio-weapons program. While investigating a remote village in the heart of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range in Southern Russia, the pair discovered that yet another T-virus outbreak had occurred, and that most of the inhabitants had already been infected. They located only one survivor, a young girl by the name of Anna.

After destroying a horde of zombies at the village's massive grain silo, they encountered the man who had once been their commanding officer, Albert Wesker. He revealed to them that the Umbrella Corporation had established several clandestine storage facilities around the world in order to disperse and conceal their developmental B.O.W.s. The village they were in was just such a location, and Anna's father was one of the head researchers in charge of overseeing the collected specimens. An explosive-rigged wall safe foiled Wesker's attempt at acquiring technical data on Umbrella's new Hunter Delta model, and he quickly fled the area.

His mission was not entirely unsuccessful, however, as he did manage to locate a digitally encrypted schematic of a nearby Umbrella research facility. Back at the village, Jill and Chris also learned of this facility after Anna revealed to them that her father had once been an employee there. As local authorities arrived on scene, they quickly left to rejoin the rest of their unit.
