Six years after the viral outbreak that destroyed Raccoon City, former police officer Leon S. Kennedy is a federal agent sent to Europe to search for the President's daughter. Unfortunately for him, he stumbles upon a scenario frighteningly similar to what he encountered back in Raccoon City...
In 1998, Raccoon City, a small mountainside town, was hit by an outbreak of the t-virus. Practically all it's residents were turned into flesh eating creatures. A nuclear missile was fired at the city and the city, along with the t virus, was destroyed, along with Umbrella, who admitted to the incident. 6 years have passed since that horrendous incident, Leon S Kennedy, one of the survivors, is a trained agent who's responsibility is to take care of the president's family. On his first day, he is sent to a remote village in Europe, armed with only a 9mm pistol, to save the president's daughter, who was apparently kidnapped.. After a nasty encounter with a strange man in a cabin, Leon is left in the village with his two police escorts dead. Now he must find Ashley in a village full of hostile locals.
Six years have passed since the viral outbreak in Raccoon City. The Umbrella Corporation has gone bankrupt due to a crash in stock sales after it is revealed that they are to blame for the incident. One of the few survivors, Leon S. Kennedy, has been trained by U.S. Special Forces to protect the President of the United States and his family. His first day on the job, he is sent to a remote location in Europe to retrieve the President's daughter, Ashley Graham. Awaiting Leon is a slew of unspeakable creatures, a "curse" that attacks the body, rendering the victim powerless to the control of sadistic, inhuman forces that would destroy everything Leon holds dear. Now, he must rescue Ashley and uncover a plot that could lead to ultimate global destruction. His time is running out, and a few familiar faces may well be his undoing.
In 1998, an outbreak of the T-Virus, created by the international pharmaceutical company Umbrella, devastated the small Midwestern town of Raccoon City, turning the population into contagious zombies. After a week of attempting to deal with the situation, the President was forced to use a nuclear weapon to destroy the city. Six years later, Leon S. Kennedy, a former police officer and survivor of the Raccoon City disaster, is part of a government agency under the direct control of the President. The day before he is supposed to start his first assignment, protecting the President's daughter, Ashley Graham, she is kidnapped, surfacing later in rural Europe. Leon is sent to retrieve her, but what he will discover is a new kind of horror that makes Raccoon City pale in comparison.

The earliest version of the game was announced for the PlayStation 2 under Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya. This build was eventually cancelled as a Resident Evil installment and became the title known as Devil May Cry. Eventually, development was moved to the GameCube console and another build emerged. This was the first version to feature Leon from RE2. The first version shown had Leon sporting a variation of his current costume and fighting a mist-like virus. The second shown version's showed one bad guy in particular that sported a hook on one of its hands, and the logo for the game reflected this (this can still be seen in the final logo). One more version was created and cancelled before Shinji Mikami took over and transformed the title into what it is today. Of all the builds developed, only one of them was never unveiled to the public (it was the one that was being worked on right before Mikami took over). In Japan, an exclusive DVD bonus disc included with the game has footage from the second version that was made.
This is the first Resident Evil game to feature Pro Logic II surround sound.
This game was originally Gamecube exclusive but was later changed to be on the PlayStation 2 and Wii as well.
The Killer 7 handgun was named after Killer7, another Capcom game produced by Shinji Mikami. This is the only weapon in the game not to feature an exclusive upgrade.
Resident Evil 4 was in production for many years due to the constant changes it went through. The game was scrapped and started again four times.
The Matilda handgun was named after the character with the same name from the movie Léon.
The story is supposed to take place in Spain, but the Spanish spoken by the village people is the Mexican dialect (which has a very different pronunciation).
This is the first Resident Evil game where Umbrella isn't responsible for the monsters and bio organic weapons (BOW) creations. Umbrella is gone by this point, and may yet come back.
This is the first Resident Evil to be broadcast in Wide-Screen. All previous releases were in Full-Screen.
The Game Cube version of this game contained a glitch. After reopening a save game file, Leon's moves sideways instead of forward, but when you reset your game and reopen the same game file again, Leon walks straight again. This sideways movement glitch happens on the Game Cube edition.
This Resident Evil used all new enemies that were not in any of the previous games. No zombies, no Cerberus, no crows, no giant spiders, no tyrants, no hunters, no lickers made it to this installment.
In addition to the Matilda, the game pays home to the movie Léon in an unlock-able "Professional" difficulty.
During the end boss battle, Ada Wong suddenly appears and throws a rocket launcher weapon that can be used to kill the boss. The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil (AKA: Bio Hazard) 2.
The Killer 7 is said to fire .45 magnum bullets but in fact the Killer 7 is a Colt M1911A1 chambered in .45 ACP.
NPC Limbo: After freeing the dog from the bear trap you see it vanish suddenly once it jumps the fence. Shortly after the villagers watching you on the ledge vanish also. This is not visible in the GameCube or PS2 versions, only on the PC version where it is presented in Full HD and with enhanced lighting. It is also noticeable on Wii, in the "Professional" mode
During the scene where an armed helicopter assists Leon in cleaning out the bad guys, the helicopter pushing over the fuel tank doesn't make a sound until it is revealed by the camera. The Ganados are alarmed only by the creaking sounds of the tank. The helicopter makes so much noise that they should have heard it coming long before it arrived at the tank.
Verdugo, Salazar's "right hand", pierces holes through the floors and ceilings with its tail, yet these holes don't stay there when the tail is retracted.
Leon and Ada continually get captured during the course of their scenarios, yet every time they get captured, their weapons and items stay on them. Who captures someone they intend to kill or torture but leaves that person's weapons on them in case they feel like breaking free and retaliating?
Leon is shown continually throwing his combat knife during cut-scenes and accurately hitting his targets. The type of knife he's using is designed for close quarters combat. It would be impossible to throw a close-quarters combat knife because it's too heavy between the handle and blade, it's not aerodynamically shaped or evenly balanced between handle and blade and would never effectively hit any of his targets.
When reloading the Rifle (standard; Wii Edition only), The speaker (on the wii remote) finishes the sound but Leon isn't finished reloading. Upgrading the reload speed once, however, will fix this. This also happens with the Semi-Auto Rifle.
The game is set in Spain, but the natives speak a Latin-American dialect of Spanish (The most obvious example to a native speaker is the use of "aca" instead of "aqui" which means "here").
Leon and Ada constantly leap off of tall/very high ledges during game play, but they never get hurt when they land regardless of the height.
Rag Doll Physics: If the player allows Ashley to die, then the camera will often focus on her body postmortem. However, every time Ashley dies, her body immediately goes limp and is completely undamaged regardless of how she dies (ie: from a fire, explosion or chain saw).
Although walking into bear traps can hurt Leon and Ashley, the villagers can walk through bear traps unaffected.
Clipping: Leon's legs go through vertical objects to his right nearby fences and ledges he jumps over. There is also a flag post in the start of chapter 2 that Leon can walk through completely.
In the beginning of the second chapter, Leon kills one of the villagers and his body is left in a corner of the room with blood stains and his weapon lying next to him. However, once the player resumes control over Leon, the villager along with his weapon and bloodstains have completely disappeared.
Near the end of the game, Ada is shown belly flopping off a platform directly over a rising helicopter. Seconds later she's safely seated inside the rear passenger seat of the helicopter when her leap would have lead to her death.
When you reload the Mine Thrower, it, like the Rifle (Standard and Semi-Auto), finishes the sound on the Wii Remote about 2 seconds before Leon finishes reloading. Again, upgrading the Reload Speed once, will fix this.
In one camp area within the village, where the players first encounter The Bella Sisters, it's necessary to defeat one of the sisters in order to get a key that unlocks a locked door that leads further into the camp which leads to the exit to the next area. However, if the player encounters the sisters with Ashley accompanying them, any villager that captures her can simply push the locked door open, enter it and immediately lead to Mission Failure.
Any time Ashley gets recaptured by the villagers during game-play, it leads to Mission Failure. However, every time Ashley is recaptured during a cut scene, the mission to rescue her continues.
If you're playing the Gamecube version with alternative uniforms (Leon wears his classic Raccoon city Police Department uniform, Ashley wears white pants and a midriff-exposing top) During the knife fight between Leon and Krauser, Ada stops the fight, and Krauser says "Well, if it isn't the bitch in the red dress?" when Ada is wearing her Alternative suit, which looks nothing like a red dress.
It is revealed through a memo written in English that Luis managed to create a machine within the Illuminados' laboratory that can kill the parasites in the host's body. However, the memo indicating this is immediately accessible to the Illuminados' soldiers whose higher commanders can speak fluent English, but by the time the player gets to the machine, it is fully operational.

2 Anonymous Letter
There's an important item hidden in the falls. If you are able to get it, you might be able to get Ashley out of the church. But I'll warn you, the route to the church isn't a walk in the park by any means. They've deployed what's called an "El Gigante," so God bless. About what's been going on in your body... If I could help you, I would. But unfortunately it's beyond my power.

3 Butler's Memo
Knowing that Sr. Ramon Salazar has no family, Lord Saddler must have used his strong faith in the Los Illuminados to his advantage to talk Sr. Salazar into undoing the seal of the Las Plagas once done by his ancestor. Sr. Salazar would never do such a thing unless he was in some way being used unknowingly. I should have sensed the Lord's dirty scheme sooner. I feel I'm partly responsible for all of this. I have no idea as to what the Lord is planning but Sr. Salazar was just being used. It is too late now however, Sr. Salazar has already taken the Plaga into his body. There is no turning back once the Plaga has turned into an adult in the body. The Plaga parasite will not die unless the host dies. There's no cure. Perhaps, Sr. Salazar may have been vaguely aware of the Lord's plan all along. But it's so hard to tell. Nevertheless, there's nothing I can do about it now. I have served the Salazar family for generations. I am prepared to continue my services until the very end.

4 Capture Luis Sera
I have confirmation that Sera has entered the castle. Why would he return during his escape leaves me to question his motives. But we must seize this moment to capture him. We will get the other two Americans after we apprehend Sera. It appears he took some vaccines when he stole our "sample.' The vaccines we can do without but we must retrieve the "sample" for it is our life blood. I feel there is somebody else or some other group involved in this whole affair. If the "sample" were to get into the hands of that other entity, the world which we seek to create will not come. We must apprehend Sera as quickly as possible.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 Castella Memo
For many years the Salazar family has served as the castellans of this castle. However, not everything is bright, for my ancestry has a dark past. Long ago there once was a religious group that had deep roots in this region called the Los Illuminados. Unjustly however, the first castellan of the castle took away their rights and powers. As a follower of this religion and as the 8th Castellan, I felt that it was my duty as well as my responsibility to atone for that sin. I knew the best way to atone for that sin was to give power back to those who we once took it away from, the Los Illunimados. As expected it took a little time, but we were able to rejuvenate the once sealed Las Plagas. With this success I was one step closer to the revival of the Los Illuminados. The reason why I released the Las Plagas from deep under the castle and gave them to Lord Saddler was not only to repay for the sins of my ancestors but I felt certain that the Lord would make better use of this power to help save the world. To save those that have sinned with the power of the Las Plagas and to cleanse the their souls creating a world without sinners. The way it was meant to be. Once cleansed, they would become one of the many Ganados where they will find their reason to live. And after the Lord has succeeded in creating the world in which he has envisioned, then the sins of my Salazar family will be atoned for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 Chief's Note
As instructed by Lord Saddler, I have the agent in confinement, alive. Why keep him alive? I do not fully understand what the Lord's intentions are. I would, however, think he'd keep them separate; not confine them together as has been ordered. I don'texpect Luis would trust a stranger but if by chance they did cooperate, the situation could get a bit more complicated. If for some reason, an unknown third party is involved, I don't think they'd let a chance like this slip by. But maybe it's all Lord Saddler's ploy - leaving use vulnerable so that the third party will surface, if they even exist that is... It's an unlikely possibility, but if a prowler is already amongst use, then our plans could be ruined. I guess the Lord thinks it's worth the risk, if we're able to stop whatever conspiracy is at work. At any rate, it's the Lord's call. We will trust his judgment as always.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7 Closure Of The Church
Regarding the two fugitives, the apprehension of Luis is our top priority; the American agent a distant second. What Luis stole from us is far more important than the girl. Unless we get it back, the girl will become useless to us. We must get it back to execute our plan to the end. If it gets in the wrong hands, the world would become a totally different place from what Lord Saddler has envisioned. At all costs, we musn't let that happen. Nevertheless, we're not letting go of the girl. To ensure that the agent does not get to her, I have locked the church door where the girl is being held. Anyone who needs access to the church must first get approval by Lord Saddler. There is a key beyond the lake but it should be safe now that the "Del Lago" has been awakened by our Lord. No one will get acros that lake alive. Plus, our same blood courses through the agent's veins. It'll be just a matter of time before he joins us. Once he does, there will be nobody else left that will come looking for the girl.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8 Female Intruder
There seems to be a female intruder among us. We believe she's connected with Sera. We also believe that she was the one who removed the gg injected into Sera before it hatched. She may have had him retirve the "sample" before the American agent's arrival. It's obvious that her objective is the "sample". We must get to her before she is able to reestablish contact with Sera. There's also reason to believe that she's working for somebody. We need her alive for interrogation. The female should be able to answer all our questions. After we have captured her, Sera will no longer be of any concern. As long as we retrieve the "sample", you may dispose of him as you see fit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9 Info On Ashley
Name: Ashley Graham She was kidnapped by an unidentified group while on her way home from her university. The kidnapper's motives are still unknown. Although there's reliable information that the perpetrator is an insider. Only a handful of people know about this kidnapping. It's been kept under wraps mostly due to the fact that we can't determine who the traitor is. The guys in intelligence say they have reliable information that Ashley's been sighted somewhere in Europe. But until we find out who the insider is, I don't know what to believe. It could be a ploy. We have found very few leads as to the whereabouts of Ashley. But members of the Secret Service and anyone else related to Ashley are being question by an investigation team. Even active agents are being investigated for any information. It's just a matter of time before the kidnapper is exposed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10 Krauser's Note It turns out that old man Saddler wasn't buying me from the start. Even though I succeeded in kidnapping Ashley, I sort of sensed this when Saddler didn't completely let me in the loop. Under the circumstances, I had no other alternative bu to call for her assistance. Perhaps she knew this was the way it was going to turn out all along... My guess is that her ultimate goal might be different from Wesker's and mine. This is just the perfect opoporunity to find out. And after I get rid of Leon and retrieve the sample, I'll put her in a bodybag along with Leon and send them both to Wesker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11 Letter From Ada Once a Plaga egg hatches, it's nearly impossible to remove it from the body. But if it's before it hatches, then it can be nautralized by medication. If it does hatch you might be able to get it out by surgery before it turns to an adult. But it won't be easy. There's a high chance you won't survive the operation. As far as I know the girl was injected with the egg before you. Her time is ticking. You should prepare yourself for the worst case scenario. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12 Luis's Memo The first castellan buried the Las Plagas deep underground below the castle to hide their very existence. But when Salazar released the Las Plagas, no one thought he could bring them back to life. Because when Salazar found them they were all just fossilized remains. Everyone knew that the parasitic organisms could not survive without their hosts. That they couldn't sustain life on their own. But when Salazar and his men excavated the remains, it almost appeared as if the Las Plagas were just waiting to be discovered so that they could resurrect. Several years later, unexplainable convulsions started occurring among the villagers who helped with the excavation of the Las Plagas. Then one day, all of a sudden, these villagers turned into violent savages. They later found out it was caused by the Las Plagas. Although they appeared fossilized, they were able to survive the long years by lying in a dormant state at the cellular level remaining in a spore-like form. Apparently during the excavation, the villagers inhaled the spores and within their bodies the parasites became active again. This is how the Las Plagas were resurrected. Even as I;m writing, the excavation of the Las Plagas continues. God only knows how many of these Plagas have been resurrected. Not to mention the countless number of Ganados that have been created. Their inhumane activity must be put to an end. If they are not stopped, people around the world could turn into victims of this crazy cult organization. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13 Luis's Memo 3 The hideous creates such as the El Gigante and the Novistadors are merely by- products of the diabolical and inhumane experiments conducted on the specimens that were once human. But there'son type of creature that clearly distinguishes itself from the rest. These creatures are called Regenerators. Regeneratoes have a superior metabolism that allows them to regenerate their lost body parts at incredible speeds. I've never seen anything like it... It is this characteristic that makes them almost invincible to conventional weapons. But like any living creature, there's a way to kill it. Apparently there are Plagas that live in its body somewhat like leeches. To stop its regeneration process, these leech-like Plagas must be located and then destroyed. But they can't be seen with the naked eye. They can only be located through thermal imaging. As far as I know, most of the Regererators most a number of these leech-like Plagas. The kill the Regenerators, each one of these leech-like Plagas must be killed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14 Luis's Memo 4 I'll report my findings about the Plagas here. The Plagas have 3 distinct characteristics ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15 Luis's Memo 5 From the initial stages of the research, we have been searching for a safe and practical removal of the Plaga. Ironically, it turns out that the real objective of this research was not to find a way to remove the Plagas from the infected persons but to find a way so that the Plaga could not be removed from the body easily. In the end, we were able to find out that the Plagas could be removed only by exposing them to a special radiation. THe only drawback with this method is that is is a very painful procedure. Since the Plaga attaches itself to the nerves, there is a possibility that it may impair the consciousness of the host. Another fact that must be mentioned is that once the Plaga grows into an adult, the removal procedure could kill the host. But perhaps death isn't so bad when you think about the alternative. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16 Our Mission The real power of the United States lies in three areas. The Justice Department, the Administrative bodies, and the Military. In order to take control of these areas, we must influence the minds of the people who advise the President. After this is done, the rest of the departments will quickly fall under our sway. If by chance the United States were to figure out our plan, the damage caused should be minimal. We will still be able to conquer the country as planned using our backup plan. Once we control the country, we will use their international influence to our advantage. The rest of the world will fall swiftly. As already stated, if our first plan doesn't go as smoothly as expected, we'll proceed with out secondary plan. By sending in our "special" forces we will infiltrate the country from within. Fear and chaos will spread through the nation like a virus. It'll only be a matter of time before the country loses its stability. At that time, when they're most vulnerable, we will strike. Rejoice my brethren; the world shall soon be cleansed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17 Our Plan Because of that agent we lost Chief Mendez and Ramon. Nevertheless, everything will proceed according to plan. I must admit however, the loss of my loyal men is a bit disheartening. But I will deal with it. Replacing that loss will not come easy. I must choose wisely; for the Plaga reflects the conscience of their hosts. If chosen poorly, they could betray me. I need men who wil; swear their allegiance to me. I've learned my lesson when Sera betrayed me. I will not make the same mistake again. In this important hour, I cannot and will not have anyone stand in my way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18 Paper Airplane Perhaps you have figured it out already, but you might be able to get out of here by using the waste disposal vent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19 Ritual Preperation Thanks to the efforts of the "Novistadors," we have been able to recapture Ashley. We shall prepare for the sacred ritual as quickly as possible and make Ashley an official member of the Los Illuminados. While we prepare for the ritual, those of you who feel inclined can attend to our American friend. We should be able to hold off our friend for at least a little while by jamming the gears in the clock tower with something. I think if we jam the gears in 3 places, it should give us enough time to prepare everything for the ritual. Now go and entertain our American tourist. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20 Sera And The Third Party The whereabouts of Sera are still unknown. Most likely he's using an old secret passage taught to him by his grandfather who used to hunt in this region long ago. I'm pretty certain that he's hiding our property somewhere in the forest. If his grandfather was still alive, I would have used him to find Sera... But how did he find out about the egg injected into his body? - And the fact that he was able to remove it before it hatched is concerning. Another factor that concerns me is that Sera escaped without property just before the American agent arrived. I don't believe that was just a coincedence. There has to be another player involved in this. In order to settle this whole situation, we have to capture Sera and wait for the effects of the drug to wear off before we inject him with another egg. Once this is done, whoever is behind all of this will surface. Nobody shall interfere with our plans. Those who do shall suffer severe consequences. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21 Game Rules -Game Rules- -Prizes- -Special Bonuses- Note: Bottle cap collections can be viewed in the Key/Treasures screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22 Village's Last Defense I clearly underestimated the American agent's capability. He's still alive. I thought that we could wait until the egg hatched, but at this rate, he could destroy the whole village before it does. We must take care of this nuisance. We shall change our priorities - for the time being, we will cease our hunt for Luis and ambush the two Americans. There is a building used to enlighten betrayers just beyond the point where you get off the lift. It's a perfect place for ambushing them. If all else fails, they still would need to face me in order to get past the last gate that leads out of the village. For only before my sight will the gate open.
Age: 20
Daughter of the United States President
I am ashamed to admit that my pure fascination with the Plagas, in hindsight, has blinded me to the true research objectives of the Los Illuminados. Even with the knowledge that Saddler was going to abuse the results of these experiments, I could not pull myself away from my research. As a result, I am just as responsible for this whole mess as he is. I see now that I was wrong, but can I stop their evil plans alone...?

Ported onto the PS2, the poly-count was slightly toned down, as well as a slight reduction on lighting and detail, also all the Cutscenes in PS2 version are all fully-rendered FMV's (though most FMV's don't display any recent changes made to the area such as blown up barrels and doors with holes shot through them), it also features an extra mini game called "Separate Ways" which is a five chapter storyline, which follows Ada' actions during the main gain and also fixes up some unanswered questions such as what happened to Leon's Jacket and how Ashley met Ada.
The Playstation 2 version has two extra costumes, Leon has a gangster outfit and Ashley has a suit of armor, while wearing the armor Ashley is invincible from harm while the gangster outfit Leon wears only changes the way he shoots the Chicago typewriter, also in the Playstation 2 version a laser gun is available to use.
Unlike previous installments of Resident Evil games, the Japanese version is actually censored for violence this time. Compared to the American release, the Japanese version edits out some of the the more gruesome death animations like decapitations and exploding heads.
The aptly named Wii edition of the now classic Resident Evil 4 brought some welcome additions to the game, whilst still keeping the same high standards as the original version on the GameCube.
For starters, the biggest overhaul comes in the controls department- in the Wii version, the default control method has you aiming by use of the Wii remote, meaning that you can pop Ganados with pin-point accuracy. For me, This is a fantastic control system- the level of depth you feel actually aiming at the villains offers an impressive level of immersion. Also, thanks to the easy aiming and shooting style, you can line up shots in a flash- Leon seems to be a lot more responsive and faster now thanks to this.
The next improvement comes in display mode: the Wii Edition of Resident Evil 4 sports true 16:9 wide-screen format, something that was gifted to the PS2 version but strangely omitted from the slightly older Gamecube version. The difference, whilst perhaps not too major, does help add to the level of immersion again by giving you a more panoramic view of your surroundings... plus it looks better on Widescreen TVs.
Now we get down to the extras. When fans of Resident Evil found out that the game would be coming to the PlayStation 2, they were somewhat disappointed with the scaled down graphics that had to be incorporated. As far as PS2 games went, it still looked great, but it just wasn't on par with the original version of the game. Leon's hair didn't have the same depth and sheen, textures were scaled down, and the real-time in game cutscenes were replaced with pre-rendered cutscenes, which was a bit of a shame. No matter what outfit the characters in the PS2 version were wearing, the cutscenes would always show them in their default costumes.
To compensate for the loss of visual quality, Capcom added some extras to the PS2 version- most notably was 'Separate Ways'- a retelling of the main game shown from Ada's point of view. This was great because it made the story fit in neater and finished it off well.
The Wii version, thankfully, is also treated to these extras- plus a trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles on Wii.
The Resident Evil 4 you know and love wasn't always that way. The first version to be announced was very different in plot, theme and look to the version which made it to release.
For starters, Leon looked slightly different... which is simply down to development in the long run. His attire was also slightly different, but definitely in keeping with the same style as we saw in the final release.
This version of Resident Evil 4, now developed into Devil May Cry, was called 'The Fog Version'. This was because the first ever teaser for it showed Leon being pursued by a dark, mist-like entity. An evolution of the T-Virus perhaps? Or more accurately, the Progenitor Virus, as this was the viral specimen that was cited in the teaser.
Mention is also given to the fact that Leon actually gets possessed by this virus.
The setting of 'fog version; is very interesting too. Though loosely similar to what is now the castle area of Resi 4, the teaser showed Leon running through a section of a very old, gothic style castle. This castle seems a lot darker and scarier than the final version, which is a bit of a shame I think- this just seems more classic Resident Evil.
The fog version was finally canned because it simply didn't keep in line with where the creators wanted to take the series- but another version of Resident Evil 4 was hot on its heels.
After seeing the very short teaser in 2002, fans at E3 the next year were eager to see how the game had developed. It turned out that Capcom had chosen to move again into a radically new direction. In the new version, dubbed 'hook man' thanks to the main enemy (an entity with a hook for a hand), the game play aspect seemed to be a hybrid between what we now know as Resident Evil 4 and the previous versions. In some cases, an over the shoulder view would be used, similar to what is now used in Resident Evil 4, whilst at other times the camera would be fixed, and the free aiming style replaced strangely with the fixed aiming of the original games.
Why this hybrid was used is unclear, but it was very interesting at the time to see such a major overhaul of the game.
What really stood out in this new trailer was the graphics- Leon looked simply stunning. His clothes flapped as curtains billowed in the wind, lights were truly dynamic and helped create a horrific atmosphere- and best of all was the fact that Leon carried a manipulative torch (think Luigi's Mansion style), meaning that the ray of light could be projected anywhere to light up the dim, suppressive setting. Needless to say, the visuals were praised.
What wasn't praised though was the rest of the game. After seeing the trailer with the old control style and a lead enemy who was like a ghost, fans felt this game was not as believable as the ones before; ghosts were just too supernatural for the series.
In fact, this game would have been ideal as a version of Silent Hill, as many themes are common for both series.
After witnessing the reaction of the public and general planning had taken place, this version of Resident Evil 4 was also cancelled.
After the demise of both the fog and hook man versions of Resident Evil 4, Capcom went back to their roots. Whilst little is known about this title, it was revealed by Capcom that the game would in fact feature the classic zombies, leading this version to be known simply as 'Zombie'. Aside from this fact, little else was ever shown to the public.
This game stopped being created as soon as Shinji Mikami, the creator of the series, took over again. He totally reworked the story, game play and setting and crafted Resident Evil 4 into what it is today.
A shame or not? I do think there are some elements that I would like to have seen carried over, such as the manipulative torch and a deep connection with Umbrella and the Progenitor Virus, but overall the game turned out better.

Overview:
In Resident Evil 4, you will sometimes spot a blue door near a Merchant marked as a sub-mission on your map. Inside the door will be the shooting range. Each time you encounter a new Shooting Range, another difficulty level will become available for it.
Once inside a Shooting Range, you will have the choice of using either Rapid-Fire Weapons (Shotgun, TMP), or Sniping (Handgun, Sniper Rifle). Whatever set you pick, just head through the doors and press A to start target practice.
Scoring:
Depending on what target you shoot and where you shoot the target, you will earn a different amount of points. A normal shot to a target is worth 50 points. If you score a head-shot on a male Ganado, you will earn 100 points, while one to a female Ganado will earn you 200 pts.
If you hit a target 5 times in a row, a Salazar target will appear, which is worth a nice 500 points. However, targets of Ashley will sometimes appear, but instead of gaining points for hitting it, you will lose 1000 points.
Rewards:
If you score over 3000 points in a go, you will earn 1 of 6 Bottle Caps available for that Shooting Range (each range is separated by row). As you get more Bottle Caps in a particular range, the difficulty will gradually increase.
In every range, there is a Rare Bottle Cap that is obtained only be hitting all targets except Ashley, or scoring more than 4000 points. Once you collect all 6 Bottle Caps in a row, you will earn a money reward, which is as follows:
Shooting Range A: 15,000 PTAS
Shooting Range B: 25,000 PTAS
Shooting Range C: 35,000 PTAS

Seperate Ways Introduction
The only reason I've taken on this mission is to get closer to my own
objective. No matter what happens, I can't let anyone figure that out.
Of course, hiding in the shadows isn't my style. I'll have to reveal myself to
him and offer advice once in a while.

Report #1
Here's what I know so far. Osmund Saddler's cult is known as Los Illuminados. They've resurrected some sort of parasitic organism they call Las Plagas. That's all my Organization knows for sure, though Saddler's occult activities seem worthy of investigation.
The Salazar family, castellans for generations, possess the ability to control Last Plagas. The Organization's hypothesis is that a unique frequency of sonic wave sensed only by the parasites is used to control them. The same principle used in dog whistles.
This was inferred through the analysis of a tissue sample we retrieved. The tissue contained an organ presumably used for sensing sound waves. I've seen cult members carrying ceremonial rods and I wonder if they emit these sounds. Of course, this is purely theoretical.
The Organization needs samples of the parasite to confirm or disprove these theories. That is the main objective of my mission and the only way to prove my loyalty to the organization. The opening moves in this chess game have been played. There's no turning back now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Report #2
Among all the people involved in this, Luis Sera has the least entanglements. He works for no organization, preferring to move on his own. I'm the one who told the Organization of his importance.
I did it because I like him. His history betrays an enthusiasm I once shared.
It was a stroke of luck that I happened to intercept his e-mail for help. It seems he can't trust the police, so he sent the e-mail to an old friend from college. He must have thought his friend was still alive. At any rate, that's how I managed to find him.
Apparently, he'd been conducting his own investigation of the cult while doing research on Las Plagas. A brilliant scientist. He's accumulated a pile of data and pieced it all together. Must be why Saddler hired him. Too bad Sera's snooping has aroused his suspicion.
When I told him who I was, he practically begged to be taken into custody. He needed protection. He said, "I have no love for Las Plagas or this stupid cult. I want out. I just want peace and quiet again." I ordered him to bring me a master Plaga specimen -- a sample -- for evidence.
Looks like he's one of the few people whom Saddler actually trusts. Tracking him down and getting my hands on the sample shouldn't be difficult. I doubt the cult will take kindly to his escape, though. I'll have to guide this along if I want it to go smoothly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Report #3
Jack Krauser has been the subject of extensive study and research by the Organization. His skills and personality have been tested both on and off the battlefield. If he weren't the best, he would become a liability that would jeopardize the rest of us.
My conclusion? He's a great soldier. No more. No less. As long as he's well compensated, he shouldn't cause any problems for us. If he does start to get restless, I can take care of him. I've studied his combat style and can deal with that arm of his if necessary.
Krauser answers directly to Wesker, and it was Wesker who decided that Krauser should be sent to spy on the cult. He also decided to send me along. I wonder if it wasn't to keep an eye on Krauser.
No doubt Krauser has already fallen to the temptation of Las Plagas and the power they represent. This could have dire consequences for the Organization. On some level, however, this may be a necessary development, as his role is to disrupt this farce of a play.
That said, the stage and its players will ultimately come crashing down in the end. Bad luck for him, but he'll play the patsy in the end and take the fall for all of us. That's why I need to make sure things keep going exactly as they are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Report #4
Leon S. Kennedy... Perhaps the most essential part of this mission. This story wouldn't be complete without him and his formidable survival skills. He has what it takes to survive against overwhelming odds. I've seen him do it before. And he's improved since then.
Practically a genius, he has the smarts and he knows how to use them. On top of that, his service as a government agent has toughened him up. I'll work behind the scenes to make him think he's the primary player here, thought it may be naive of me to think that'll be easy.
Considering the involvement of both Saddler and Krauser, the possibility of unforeseen problems is there, but I need him in the supporting role for me to achieve my goals. I'll do whatever it takes to keep him in his place and make all this go smoothly.
Of course, his role didn't exist at all until a few months ago. Back then, my role was much simpler, too. But that was before the President's daughter was abducted and Leon was dispatched alone to find her. Talk about a major script revision.
I don't think I need to worry. Leon's been through worse and always comes up smelling like roses. His consistent luck is part of the reason why I have absolute and unshakable faith in my vision of what's in store for him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Report #5
It wasn't easy, but I'd say the mission has been a success. Getting my hands on the sample was my initial objective after all. But I've sent Wesker a different present, just as the Organization ordered. Pretending to work with him was entertaining.
Albert Wesker... I wonder where he's headed next. Something tells me this whole affair was just a taste of what he's got in store. To him, Umbrella represented power. He used it to hide behind while he made plans of his own. And now the umbrella's been folded.
With the sanctuary of their old Umbrella ruined, those in power struggle to erect a new one. They are aware of their own crookedness and deceit as they engage in their personal war of light and darkness. That's why Wesker will stop at nothing in opening his new Umbrella.
The giant pharmaceutical corporation S maintains medical and drug facilities the world over. We know for certain that Wesker has been in contact with them following Umbrella's demise. There's no doubt we'll next hear from him there. The Organization must remain vigilant.
But Wesker's not stupid. He knows exactly what the Organization is thinking. He and I still have time to continue our little game of cat and mouse before the next move is played. This mission may be over, but the battle is just beginning.
Introduction:
Umbrella is gone now, but everything they created isn't over yet. In my opinion, this game is become the least Resident Evil. There are no zombies, no returning enemies, and only a few returning characters: Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Albert Wesker.
Graphics: 10/10
The game's graphics are much like the same as of Resident Evils 1, 0 for the Gamecube, except that this game is designed like Resident Evil Dead Aim, where you move along with the graphics, which again, is a feature I don't like very much half the time. I preferred the graphics in the castle above anywhere else in the game. There is something about the design layout of the castle just feels right. Even the Ganado and Los Illuminatos and some other monsters looked real believable with these new graphics.
Sound 8/10:
The sound quality is excellent. The soundtrack sounds generic for the environments that this game takes place in. The voice acting sounds great. Although Salazar does sound a bit irritating, but he's 20 years old, so he still considered a kid. The music towards the end when you're on the beach fighting a war zone of commandos sound real cool for the situation.
Game Play: 7/10:
As long as they have to make the game like this, where you have to move around with the graphics at least the game doesn't change views and gives you a cross gun guide like they did in the Survivor series. They give you a laser pointer guide instead. So it's better than what those Survivor games did for you. Half the ways Leon dies are very gruesome: being decapitated, acid melting his head down to his skull, being chopped in half, being impaled by the head by and a long iron claw and then through the stomach with the other iron claw. It gets sick, but it's something you could scream or laugh at. Some parts I didn't like is like during when being chased by a run away boulder and you have to constantly striking the controls, or when you have to hit the dodge commands during some cut scenes. At first you're not going to know you have to do that, because no other Resident Evil game made you pay attention to the on-screen commands during a cut scene. The parts I also find unbelievable is when you get attacked by something like from a villager, or a cultist, or anyone, you seem to be able to walk it off like being stabbed by a butcher knife or being stabbed with a sickle is nothing. Any other person would be badly injured if it doesn't kill you.

Those expecting another fixed camera exploration / puzzle solving game can leave now.
Resident Evil 4 shocked many fans of the series due to it's intuitive and simplistic new method of control. Gone were the fixed cameras and door opening sequences, instead replaced with a third person 'over the shoulder' viewpoint, which was employed to help with the large amount of shooting involved in this new addition to the franchise.
With the new camera angle came a game that was focused more heavily on action as oppose to exploration. Throughout the game, numerous weapons can be unlocked and upgraded, all of which are in someway invaluable to your quest - a few of the notable weapons are the Semi-Auto Rifle, the Striker Shotgun (also known as the DAO-12) and the Killer 7. The Killer 7 is a powerful Magnum named after another Capcom game.
The mass of weapons to collect and upgrade allows for a much longer adventure than previously experienced in the series - as you progress through chapters (of which the game is comprised) you will face increasingly difficult enemies.
There are still some puzzle solving sections in there- but nothing too taxing, and predominantly these have been replaced with in game sequences where the player must hit the correct set of buttons to continue. (This is used heavily in a fight with Krauser).
Adding another spin onto the gameplay is the addition of a second character to protect - Ashley Graham, the President's Daughter. After you have extricated Ashley, she will follow you closely and subsequently you will find yourself in tough situations where you are not only trying to keep yourself alive, but Ashley also. This is a very interesting gameplay mechanic which I personally enjoy very much - completing a stage and keeping Ashley safe from harm is a satisfying experience.
There is also a short section in which the player actually controls Ashley. This is nothing new though - even Resident Evil 2 had a short section where you could control Ada.
When a movie of the 'hook man' version of Resident Evil 4 was made available to the public, it instantly garnered attention thanks to its impressive and detailed graphics - light was dynamic, textures were high resolution and very detailed, and characters were accurately modeled. Whilst that game may have been scrapped, the graphics engine was saved and used in the final version of the game.
The graphics are fantastic - and in the PC version they are even better than the GameCube version in certain aspects. The GameCube version used a rendering technique known as bump-mapping, which added more detail to textures and affected the way light hit it, whilst the PC version didn't use this - instead the PC model had much higher resolution textures and the ability to play in widescreen.
The sound in Resident Evil 4 is perfect for the game. When enemies spot you, the music instantly takes a much faster and more sinister tempo- the rest of the time, the background music is dark and suppressive - as it should be.
Sound effects are accurately recreated - gunshots are loud, clear and deep - and the sound of exploding heads in the game is excellent.
When curtains billow or water splashes, it is all heard perfectly - the sound really helps place the player in the game.
In many ways, this is the trump card for Resident Evil 4.
Not only is there the main game to complete, but after that you have some great quality mini games.
Mercenaries allows you to play as some of the supporting characters in the game, including Krauser, Ada, Wesker and HUNK. The objective is to kill as many Ganados as you can before your evacuation chopper arrives. You can extend your time by collecting pickups in each level - but beware; as time goes on, enemies get harder to kill and there are much more of them too.
There are four stages to choose from, each from different stages in the main game with different enemies to kill.
The reward for beating Mercenaries with a 5 star rating on every level with each character is the ridiculously powerful Handcannon, which can be used in the main game.
Other extras include Assignment Ada, which pits Ada against enemies on The Island level as she tries to collect Plagas samples. Interestingly, this and the other Ada mini game intersect with the main quest, which gives the player extra information and helps complete the story.
Separate Ways is another Ada based mini game which is essentially her side of the main quest. This is quite a long mini game and the reward for completing it is the Chicago Typewriter.
I could go on about how after you complete the main game you unlock the difficult 'Professional' mode, and how after you beat that you get another gun etc. But by now I am sure you have realized that the replay value of Resident Evil 4 is astonishing.
Resident Evil 4 is a true return to form for the ageing series. The new camera angle, higher action level, impressive graphics and large amount of extras make this possibly the best Resident Evil game so far.

Source #3 Review:
Capcom vowed that Resident Evil 4 would change the direction of the series. Announcing sweeping changes such as there would no more Umbrella Corporation, nor would there be zombies. To the traditional Resident Evil enthusiast like myself, the idea of no zombies seemed crazy. I have to admit I was skeptical, I went into the game with low expectations. Even for the first hour or so of playing through the game, it just seemed like it wasn't going to make the RE fan in me happy or satisfied. But I also have to admit, as the game moved on, it not only brought out some new elements that were very fresh and exciting, but brought back a little of what made me love Resident Evil in the first place. Graphics: The graphics in the game are top-notch. And with the addition of 360-degree panoramic views of your surroundings, it leaves nothing short. Because of this, it has to beat out even Resident Evil Zero and the Remake for a better graphics engine. Though I didn't get the sense that the lighting and shadows were anything special. But my opinion may be slightly skewed seeing as I have played both Half Life 2 and Doom 3 in the past month or two, and each of those games have superior lighting effects. So I may be trying too much to compare it to them. Still, Resident Evil 4 does a great job overall in this department. The attention to detail is another bright spot for this game. Unlike previous games where there were maybe 4 different zombie models, there are several different enemy character models. And when getting up close and personal with each one, you can see the expense they took to make sure the characters looked realistic. My favorite would have to be the chainsaw guy. He was just freaky. Add to that the fact that he could take you out with one shot, and I was doing my best to keep my distance from him. Sound: I thought the sounds were recorded well, but I didn't get the feeling that they made the game spookier. However, the background music does add to the panic situations that you encounter several times in the game. Most of it was fine, but some of it sounded like music that belonged on an episode of Shaft. I still rank the background music of Resident Evil 2 as some of my favorite in the Resident Evil series. The music in Resident Evil 4 was ok, but I can't say it did much for me. The voice acting was very good however. Particularly Leon and Ada's voice actors. The new Leon (Paul Mercier) was as good as the Leon from Resident Evil 2 (Paul Haddad). Sally Cahill makes her return as Ada's voice, and personally I thought she stepped it up a notch over her performance as Ada in Resident Evil 2. Ashley's voice acting was alright, though I found her to be a little annoying at times. One minute she sounded as if she was a full-grown woman, the next a teenager. Seemed a little inconsistent to me. Controls: This is the area that I give the lowest marks. But an 8 out of 10 is still a good score. My reasoning behind this is because I wasn't a huge fan of the way they put in various scenes where you lost control of your character, and required you to pay close attention to the screen to look for buttons that appear on the screen. These button combinations would only appear for a second and if you didn't press them quickly enough, your character died. It was this system that bothered me, as it turned particular scenes into a "Dragon's Lair" sort of game where you had to press certain controls at certain moments, and if you didn't have your timing down correctly, you couldn't move on. It's one thing to time a monster's attack and dodge it, but this system prevented you from having any spontaneity in beating a particular scene. You either hit the correct button combination at the right or you didn't. The rest of the controls are pretty easy to muster, especially if you're a veteran of the Resident Evil series. I have no quarrel with the rest of the system. Gameplay: As in Resident Evil Zero, this game also does not make use of the item box system. Instead, Leon carries an attached case with him that can hold many items. You can purchase upgrades to the attach case so that you can carry more items. This is essential at later stages in the game, as you'll need to tote at least 3-4 weapons around, for use in various situations. Also, the weapon system is completely re-vamped. Instead of finding bigger and better weapons in the game, you collect money as you find it. In various spots of the game you will encounter a traveling merchant who will sell you everything you will ever need. Not only can you purchase weapons, but new to Resident Evil 4 is the ability to upgrade those weapons. So weapons you buy can be upgraded with more firepower, a larger holding capacity, and even a faster reloading speed. I also mentioned different kinds of weapons. There's still your standard pistols and shotguns, but you can also purchase sniper rifles with scopes, rocket launchers, and hand grenades. Certain situations require long distance shooting that you can only get from the sniper rifle, while others may require more close-up firepower such as the shotgun. These new enhancements are great additions that I almost wish they'd have thought of for previous Resident Evil games. Replay Value: To keep you playing, there are two extra games that are actually quite addicting. The first is Assignment Ada in which you can play as Ada, and your mission is to infiltrate areas of the island and locate virus samples. Once you retrieve five samples, you have to call in your evacuation chopper and make your escape. The second game (which is my personal favorite of the two) is The Mercenaries. You start out with Leon, and you pick one of four stages. The objective of the game is to kill as many Ganados as you can before the timer runs out. Each kill nets you points, and the more consecutive kills you achieve, the higher the bonus points. Also, you can find items in the area that will add to your bonus time. Your goal is to get enough points to get a four or five-star rating, and thus unlock new playable characters. Very addicting. Conclusion: In conclusion, I was surprised by Resident Evil 4. The villagers (Ganados) are a fresh addition that take the place of the zombies. And even though Umbrella has been eliminated in this stage of the story, there's always a chance that some other company can come along to take their place. I was worried that Capcom would completely abandon the old Resident Evil when they made these changes to the story, but after playing through it I am relieved at what they came out with. And they've set things up for what could be a great Resident Evil 5. Overall, I think this is a pretty good addition to the series that will satisfy long-time Resident Evil fans, and bring in some new fans as well. I think Capcom did a fine job at breathing some new life into a great series.
