Nicholai Ginovaef (based on Russian Николай Зиновьев) is a ruthless member of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service as Monitor.
Virual Outbreak of Raccoon City:
Nicholai served as a Commando Team Leader when the U.B.C.S. was sent into Raccoon City by Umbrella to handle the T-virus outbreak.
Secretly, however, Nicholai was a member of "Operation Watchdog". Operation Watchdog is a mission to gather combat information on zombies and other bio monsters that dangers Raccoon City.
Platoon Delta which is the team of the U.B.C.S. that Nicholai is part of suffers much casualties, leaving him, Carlos, and injured Mikhail the only survivors. Jill Valentine decides to join the team after she meets Carlos. Right away, Nicholai distrusts her, but Carlos talks Nicholai into accepting Jill's part. After going over the objective for the mission, which is to head over to the clock tower, and give a signal to a helicopter that is waiting for the signal in the suburbs. They split up, and go separate ways. Nicholai later meets Jill in the Umbrella office where he is caught, by Jill, gunning down a teammember, Murphy Seeker. Jill demands him to tell her why he had to kill him. He says that he was bitten by a zombie, and would be a threat that he had to eliminate. Shortly later, a zombie riot storms the building. From the other other room, Jill hears Nicholai scream. The screaming being cut off gives Jill the asumption that Nicholai was killed by the zombies.
Three days later, he was founded in the Raccoon General Hospital by Carlos. The sight doesn't look good; it reveals that Nicholai was up to something suspicious. He either attacked fellow UBCS member Tyrell, or Tyrell telling him that Nicholai shot him. Tyrell realizes that Nicholai is a traitor and that his injuries would kill him anyway, so he take out a grenade, and pulls the pin. The bomb explodes killing Tyrell, sending Nicholai out the window, and Carlos ducked out of the way. Now it's more clear that Nicholai is the one that is the reason why Delta Platoon is dying faster than if zombies attacked them more. So he decides to plant an explosive in the hospital waiting room, so he can get Carlos dead as well. Carlos notices the bomb, and quickly runs back in the direction of the clock tower where he must return the T-Vaccine to infected Jill Valentine. The bomb blows, taking the whole hospital down, but Carlos survives by diving into a back corridor of the clock tower's back door. Carlos returns to Jill, and after curing her, he lets her know that Nicholai is their enemy.
After a failed attempt to kill Carlos by blowing him up in the hospital, Nicholai headed in the direction of the University of Raccoon City to retrieve a sample of blood from a newly-developed Tyrant named Thanatos. Nicholai is acompanied by some more of his Delta Platoon that didn't get killed off in the zombie invasion of the city. Thanatos proved to be a perfect match against the commandos, so Nicholai enacted a contingency plan by destroying Raccoon University. This failed. The failed bombing of the university results in Thanatos mutating into a super form. Nicholai takes off for the Raccoon City Park, where he left some unfinished business there with Jill and Carlos, and he leaves the batle against the Thanatos to come armed civilians.
Nicholai returned to the Raccoon Park where he met up with Jill again. Nicholai reveals his real intensions and that he was the one behind the massacure of the commandos. As the ground shakes like an earthquake, Nicholai takes off, heading for an abandoned Umbrella factory near the park.
Jill meets Nicholai one last time. He's piloting a helicopter and exchanges both gunfire and talk, resulting in Nicholai piloting off, and Jill and Carlos behind.
In the novelization of Resident Evil: Apocalypse, author Keith R.A. DeCandido changes Nicholai's surname to "Sokolov."
In earlier versions of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Nicholai was meant to be Mikhail's brother.
Nicholai's fate in the storyline depends on the game player. If you commanded Jill to push Nemesis off the bridge in the park, you will meet Nicholai in a hallway before the garbage compactor, which the cutscene results in Nicholai being lifted by the head and something causes him to spill his blood. If you encounter Nicholai and he's in the helicopter, Jill may shoot him down causing the helicopted to explode. Or you could allow Nicholai to fly away in the chopper. However, regardless to how the game player decides Nicholai's fate in Resident Evil 3, there's documents with Nicholai's signature on it that are dated after the events of Raccoon City.
